Can’t believe my dog did this!

We rehomed our lovely dog 2 years ago and he is now 4 years old. He came to us from a very loving home
(re homing was for a genuine reason) and with a very sweet nature. We’re so lucky he’s slotted into our family perfectly. He’s definitely ‘my’ dog though, doesn’t bother much with the kids.

Earlier this evening I was in the kitchen and my son and daughter were playing in the lounge (rather roughly I suspect 🙄) and my daughter fell off the sofa onto her face. She’s only 3 so was VERY upset, really crying her eyes out. I was sat on the floor with her in my arms cuddling her and the dog came up and sniffed around us and walked away. Next thing, he reappeared with DDs favourite teddy in his mouth. He plopped it into her lap and sort of nudged it further into her. He then just sat next to us with his head resting on her leg. I was gobsmacked! He has NEVER done anything remotely like that! He’s not a ‘fetch’ kind of dog, so it was obvious he was trying to comfort her rather than play a game. I know this sounds crazy and most dogs have moments like this but I just felt so overwhelmed in that moment of just how much dogs understand human emotions.
My husband came home and I told him and he was totally nonplussed and just said ‘oh that’s nice’ 🙄
So I’m telling you! Now excuse me whilst I go cuddle my emotionally intelligent marvel of a dog 😂

As they say on the Litter Tray, photo please or it didn't happen!

What an Awesome Ddog you have! So gorgeous that he brought DD’s teddy to her to soothe her!

One night a few years ago, I had a blanket around my shoulders and was sat in front of the heater in lounge , shivering and feeling very unwell with nasty fever. Then , I felt something warm and soft pressing against my legs, and it was our fluffy Ddog who had wedged himself right up close to me, and sat there for a long time giving me a protective doggy cuddle!

My sister-in-law has an intellectual and physical disability and has a lovely connection with animals. One night sister-law was wailing and crying loudly with grief over the loss of her mum who had died when Ddog came and plonked his nose on her lap and stayed next to her. Sister-in-law had her eyes tightly shut , but opened them up when she felt Ddog’s nose on her lap , giggled at Ddog, and patted Ddog while continuing to gently cry her heart out.

A few years when my profoundly deaf ds2 was living at home, I left him at home with our Bumbledog when I went out for the evening... When ds2 went to bed, Bdog went with him and disappeared under the duvet. Fast foward two hours and Bdog woke ds2 up by diving out from under the covers and sitting by the door. Ds2 opened the door and followed him downstairs to find me in the hall having just got home. Bumbledog was letting him know I was home.. As an aside he was a pet and not a hearing dog!

GuyFawkesDay · 09/01/2023 20:54

Awww, they're the best aren't they? Mine is snoring on the sofa right now but he's an excellent tear licker and face snogger and snuggles up all day with anyone who's poorly. He's a daft ha'peth but I do love him

365names · 09/01/2023 20:58

Mine be always greet us with soft toys in their mouths and they want proper cuddles.
They will not let the children argue and bark until they are quiet.
They herd too. They will sit on anyone crying and lick away their tears and push themselves into their hands and head on lap.

About a year or more ago, DD told me that youngest lab and her play a wink game. I was like dogs can’t wink. She said they can and showed me.

they sit facing each other, staring at each other, she winks at him with one eye , he copies with the eye facing her, eg her left eye, he winks his right eye so Mirror image, then she winks again either same eye and he copies or alternates and he does as well - so he’s a mirror image. If she puts her hands over her eyes - he puts his paws on his eyes etc. I couldn’t believe it - they play this ‘game’ daily and she will do other things like tap her nose twice with her hands and he copies and taps his paw twice on his nose. It’s unbelievable until you actually see it.

she is nearly 16 and he is nearly a 5 year old lab - only started it in lockdown but they keep adding news things and often play this ‘copy’ game for 30 minutes to an hour - he wags his tail constantly and often looks like he is laughing.

your DD and him have a special bond - what a lovely story.

WHOSAVERYVERYGOOOODDOGGO!!!

We don't deserve dogs. There's something so amazing about a dog having the desire to 'help' or comfort.

So help me god, if anyone tries to fuck up the purity of this thread I shall release my 15 year old rescue angel HELL HOUND on them and their favourite shoes.

That’s lovely. Our dog is a tiny little thicko, has no recall and constantly puts himself in danger under peoples feet. But, if anyone isn’t feeling great or is unwell he has to sit up beside them. He also gives gives cuddles if you request them.

I opened this expecting another dog bite thread. How wonderful, what a good doggy...it makes such a change from all the dog hate posts. Dogs can be so in tune with emotions and react in empathetic ways. So intelligent.

DH is disabled and often in pain due to chronic conditions. On one occasion, he was sitting in his chair, doubled over groaning in pain. Ddog jumped onto the next chair, reached over and rested her head on his shoulder, and snuggled up to him. She is a big dog! She is not a 'cuddler' normally. A mix of breeds, including ones that can be aloof. Her main breed is a 'fighting bears' breed.

Like you OP we were emotionally moved by ddogs actions.

That really is so lovely 💕 It’s like they know when comfort is needed.
My children are 3, 4 and 8 so in the last 2 years Ddog has seen PLENTY of tantrums and tears to say the least 😂 and he has never done what he did earlier. I wonder if it’s because this time DD had really hurt herself (she’s fine now but won’t be trampolining on the sofa anytime soon!) and she had a graze on her head that was bleeding slightly and that’s what made him do it ❤️

Aww, dogs are the best! My LO is going through a stage of epic tantrums and my poor dog is very concerned. We spent ages teaching him not to touch DS’s toys, so instead, my dog has taken to searching out dummies. He gets as close as he can without physically touching one and cries until I go pick it up. He’s obviously learned that upset baby = dummy 🤷‍♀️. If there is no dummy around, I have to get one to show him so he’ll stop looking.

Oh I love these cute dog stories! We are three weeks in with a new puppy and today my one year old was crying as she was stuck on a table in the playroom and he ran in and I was panicking running after him incase he was rough but he just fussed around her and rounded me up to get there faster! I so hope he can one day be as lovely as your Ddog OP!

So lovely ❤️ When I was a teen my parents got a puppy and I still remember now how hard it was with the training and socialising (and I wasn’t really doing any of it!) Good news is my parents dog turned out so fab and no doubt yours will too.

You have a beautiful dog there.
Dogs have an enormous amount of empathy, apart from my mum's who left here lying on the ground after she took a fall whilst out walking and plodded off home, no interest in raising alarm , mum found her asleep on her front lawn.

Oh no! I guess some dogs (much like humans) really can’t be arsed. I hope your Mum is ok? ❤️

Aw, what a lovely, clever dog! I saw a video of a dog gently putting a fish back in a river that had jumped out, so clever and compassionate.

Rainbowunicornsprinkles · 09/01/2023 21:25

Had a similar experience with our beloved almost 18 ddog.

My eldest was crying as I changed his nappy on the mat on the floor. She brought over one of her own toys & played next to him, almost touching his hand, but not quite. He stopped crying & started watching her. She entertained him long enough for me to finish his nappy & pick him up.

Next doors cat would often sit with us if we were poorly as well. Even if I was upstairs he’d come & seek me out & just sit with me for half an hour or so. Once found him sat with younger ds in the living room when he was home sick from school.

🥰🥰
