Can’t believe my dog did this!

We rehomed our lovely dog 2 years ago and he is now 4 years old. He came to us from a very loving home
(re homing was for a genuine reason) and with a very sweet nature. We’re so lucky he’s slotted into our family perfectly. He’s definitely ‘my’ dog though, doesn’t bother much with the kids.

Earlier this evening I was in the kitchen and my son and daughter were playing in the lounge (rather roughly I suspect 🙄) and my daughter fell off the sofa onto her face. She’s only 3 so was VERY upset, really crying her eyes out. I was sat on the floor with her in my arms cuddling her and the dog came up and sniffed around us and walked away. Next thing, he reappeared with DDs favourite teddy in his mouth. He plopped it into her lap and sort of nudged it further into her. He then just sat next to us with his head resting on her leg. I was gobsmacked! He has NEVER done anything remotely like that! He’s not a ‘fetch’ kind of dog, so it was obvious he was trying to comfort her rather than play a game. I know this sounds crazy and most dogs have moments like this but I just felt so overwhelmed in that moment of just how much dogs understand human emotions.
My husband came home and I told him and he was totally nonplussed and just said ‘oh that’s nice’ 🙄
So I’m telling you! Now excuse me whilst I go cuddle my emotionally intelligent marvel of a dog 😂

My mum had severe post-natal psychosis. I was a premmie born very early in the 70’s when they had no clue what they were doing. We had a black lab and my uncle had a gsd that he had found in a forest. It had been very jumpy until I came home from the hospital and began turning up at my place every morning before Dad left for work. He put himself between me and mum whenever she was a bit nuts and the both of them were my entertainment and nurturers as I grew. Because I had them, I demanded less of my mum and she was less aggressive. I had very floppy legs which doctors told her were caused by lack of oxygen at birth (I had to be revived a few times and I am sure this contributed to her PNP). When I was about 3 1/2 the GSD would encourage me to stand up and walk by pushing his face underneath me and lift me up. Eventually I was holding onto his hair/ears/collar/wherever and dragging myself up and trying to walk when a health visitor noticed and realised that my hips were floppy. I was sent to a different specialist who realised that I didn’t have brain damage, but dislocated hips and a badly set (now deformed) leg. I was given calipers for my hips and the dogs used to stand either side of me and help me walk. I wish there were videos then.

Oh glorious, wonderful dog - that's so lovely.

I think we might need a photo of said dog, OP? :)

Dogs are the best. Our Spaniel always hangs out with the one who 'needs her' most. She just knows.

That's lovely! What a good boy.

I have a gentle and affectionate dog, but he's far too stupid to do anything like that.

Killing myself laughing at your comment 😂

My spaniel is super caring like this too, if I'm having a cry about something he often goes to his bed to bring me one of his toys, licks my face the cuddles on my lap.

What good boys we are lucky to have 🥰♥️

Hope your LO is okay now xx

GetOffMyDoorJack · 09/01/2023 23:36

No you're crying 😭

whytesnow · 09/01/2023 23:36

Dogs are amazing we don't deserve them

Ineedwinenow · 09/01/2023 23:39

Awww can we swap! Mine isn’t currently talking to me as it was groom day so she’s going out of her way to ignore me!

Minimalme · 09/01/2023 23:44

This is a lovely, lovely example of a fine dog!

We have 3 pugs - one is almost permanently attached to dh and if we cuddle, will force himself in between us.

We always joke he is hoping to elope one day and make their relationship official Grin

A couple of years ago dh and I had a rare argument and I went to have a cry in bed.

Dh's dog came up after a couple of minutes and sat with me, resting his chin on my lap. I honestly think he was trying to cheer me up and while our relationship went back to frosty later that day, we both knew he secretly liked me too.

Dogs are the purest form of love.

Sorry only just had a proper look at these posts before bed. So many gorgeous stories and can’t believe how many dogs have done similar or more. They really are incredible ❤️

I’m going to have to resist throwing DD off the sofa tomorrow to see if he does the same 😂

We have two and they have different functions. One cuddles you if you're physically unwell, and the other cuddles you if you need emotional support.

The latter spends most of her time with our Ukrainian guest at the moment.

dontgobaconmyheart · 09/01/2023 23:57

How lovely. What a sweetheart all these doggies are.

Our 10 month old puppy is a pain in the backside for 95% of the day and a cheeky obstinate little thing that backchats every time you say no and still hasn't learnt his manners, or anything else frankly despite great effort and expense but my goodness is he loving when the moment takes.

He slides into my bed every morning, tucks his head under my chin and exhales as though he's in heaven, comes running every single time I cough or sneeze to comfort me and I regularly wake up to one of his toys placed next to me on the bed (chronically ill so in bed asleep a lot). He comes to say goodnight every evening with kisses and loves to share - the other day he brought me one of his chews then ran off to get his before popping himself next to me; a nice gesture but they absolutely stink 😆

Nothing better than a dog is there.

So sweet.

when I was a teen I was severely depressed. There were a couple of times I sat sobbing, so close to doing something stupid, and our then dog came over and pushed her head into my lap and sat down with me. She was daft as two short planks the rest of the time but she just knew. Miss her so much.

newfriend05 · 10/01/2023 01:41

The best thing I've read in ages , what a lovely doggy

Toddlerteaplease · 10/01/2023 01:47

That's so sweet. I was also expecting a not so happy end.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 10/01/2023 02:03

What a wonderful special doggy you have! If he also has a favourite toy I hope someone takes it to him every day.

HariKris · 10/01/2023 07:16

We used to have a dog that would open the door for the cats. It was a listed building with a wide heavy door, so no cat flap allowed. Cats would gather to go out. Dog would go up to door, push down on handle with his front paws then kind of hitch back at an angle until his weight pulled the door open. He would stand then holding door ajar until the cats went out.

he would also go down to the village shop as a party trick and come back with a cucumber, which was put on our bill.

squeakstick · 10/01/2023 08:13

This is so lovely! What an amazing dog!

CMOTDibbler · 10/01/2023 09:09

That is absolutely gorgeous. One of mine is very emotionally savvy, and breaks up fights between the cats or chickens, and at the least upset will be with you pressing on you like deep pressure. He also has a very, very good sense of 'bad people'

I think dogs can pick up on bad people. My dog is always absolutely thrilled to meet every human that has crossed his path, except for two occasions. When we were out for a walk, but standing at patch of grass that didn’t lead anywhere and a man changed directions and started walking towards us, the dog went mental. The man was so startled he backed off. Similar thing happened again and he went crazy. He’s a very small dog and hardly ever barks but can make a lot of noise when he wants.

Ah thank you for your lovely reply 😊 I've three little kids and puppy and I just hope I'm doing my best for everyone so that was really nice to hear! Lovely heart warming thread here ✨️
