Matilda Film

Did anyone else not realise that the film version of Matilda the musical wasn't being released on Netflix in the UK until next year? I was looking forward to watching it this afternoon. Is it just me?

Surely everyone knows that a film thats still in the cinema isn't going to be on Netflix at the same time?

To be fair there have been a few films that have had a simultaneous cinema and home streaming release so I can understand the confusion.

There is some good choreography and the cast were good but it was too long and really disappointing. I got bored several times. Why one of the children is referred to as bogtrotter I don’t know. Just because Dahl used racist terms doesn’t justify their use in current adaptations. It’s really offensive.

Because his name is Bruce Bogtrotter....

We saw the theatre musical in 2015(?) and loved the kids’ inventive use of letters, desks, swings, skateboards, karate moves…
I noticed a climbing frame in the trailer so looking forward to more of the same in the film.

You can watch it on Netflix if you have a VPN and set it to America.

To be fair, I assumed it had a short run in the cinema and was moving quickly to Netflix. That happens sometimes. Surely you can understand that point of view?

Pineconederby · 29/12/2022 20:25

What ‘added storyline’? If you’re referring to the circus performers, they’re Miss Honey’s parents and in the book.

Charlieiscool · 29/12/2022 20:31

pinkflipflop85 obviously I realise that but it is racist and should not be used in a production now. Thank you for your attempt at adding insight and assuming someone is an idiot instead of hearing a perfectly valid point.

YouWouldNotBelieveIt · 29/12/2022 20:32

I watched some of it the other day. I thought it absolute crap. The film is FAR better.

You're probably comparing it to the 1996 film. Bit silly really.

No you can't, as you have to sign in with and pay, and it won't let you put your card details as it asks for a US zip code, it won't let you put a UK postcode.

You can. I logged in on Christmas Day using Express VPN then I logged in to Netflix using my normal log in details.

Willowswood · 29/12/2022 21:54

@Cb1987

Right that's it, I'm giving it another go

Make sure your VPN is pointing to/from America. Some VPN do not work with Netflix but know express VPN does.
I just connected to the VPN then logged in to Netflix as normal via a browsers as I was on my laptop at the time.

@Cb1987

Omg omg omg!!!

Thankyou so much!! The vpn I was using wasn't working, so I tried express vpn and it's worked!!!!!

Amazing my daughter and I can't wait to watch again tomorrow from the living room!!! ❤️

You can.

ExpressVPN - it also has a week's free trail.

Thanks, see my post below, I managed to do it

Catmuffin · 30/12/2022 21:49

I loved it at the cinema and am looking forward to seeing it on netflix in the summer

Santamajormummy000 · 30/12/2022 22:51

Well, I wasn’t disappointed.
The film rattled along at a great speed and the kids were great.
Perhaps the very “wordy” songs weren’t easy to understand, especially the first time hearing them. We had Italian subtitles on for DH and they helped us, too.

Good to see “I’ve been busy!” was kept from the stage play.

Runningfire · 30/12/2022 23:01

Saw it at the cinema and my daughter LOVED it. She actually cried when I said she couldn’t see it again on Netflix until the Summer - I don’t understand a 6 month delay

EddietheEagle · 30/12/2022 23:08

AHelpfulHand · 28/12/2022 16:16

Its rubbish anyway. Nothing like the original Matilda

It's not meant to be?! It's Matilda the musical, which is a stage production.

Runningfire · 30/12/2022 23:19

I have NordVPN on my phone and when I set it to US Netflix doesn’t accept my password….anyone know a way around d

inappropriateraspberry · 30/12/2022 23:26

Not just you! I've seen ads saying it was on Netflix.
How odd. I was going to pay for a month as daughter wanted to see it, will have to see if I can get to a cinema. Ugh.

EddietheEagle · 31/12/2022 14:17

Ohh how annoying. I've got vpn 360 and yesterday it was allowing me to see it and today it's not, having real problems.

Anyone else?

BedTaker · 31/12/2022 14:23

Oh, I thought it was on Netflix now, I was planning to watch it with the kids in the next few days. It keeps being advertised on FB - just watching the clips with the kids bouncing around makes me feel exhausted! 😂
