Matilda Film

Did anyone else not realise that the film version of Matilda the musical wasn't being released on Netflix in the UK until next year? I was looking forward to watching it this afternoon. Is it just me?

We loved it, though DS gave it 9/10 as there were a few deviations from the book. We also love the US film too.

It's a musical adaptation. It would not be possible for it to be exactly the same as the book.

Use a VPN and you can watch it on Netflix.

I've tried that and it doesn't work. You have to sign up for a US Netflix account, and you need a US postcode in order to process the payment

While you expect it to be different in some ways to the book I think a lot of the charm of the book and of Matilda as a character developing her powers etc was lost.
It was more Matilda the storyteller - a musical inspired by the book rather than Matilda - The Musical.
I did it enjoy it and it was well done but as a fan of the book it was a bit disappointing.

My little girls really want to go to the cinema and this is the only thing on at our local cinema… They are nearly 4 and just turned 5. I know it’s a PG- I was wondering if somebody that has seen it could let me know if it’s suitable for small children? Thank you

People always say these sorts of things when they have read a book first or aswell.

Books will always be different to film or stage versions. It probably wouldn't have worked the same if they had made it exactly the same as the book.

I haven't even read the book. Probably wouldn't now.

Yes I would say so, there were plenty of young children this age at the cinema today x

EezyOozy · 29/12/2022 17:53

@Willowswood brill thank you v much :)

I'd say the opposite to the other poster! I think it would be too scary for that age.

It's excellent, but it's dark. Miss Trunchbull is sadistic (as she is meant to be!) but I found it a hard watch - as an adult (admittedly a fairly sentimental one!)

greentwig · 29/12/2022 19:19

We saw it today and thought it was brilliant.

I’d agree that it’s a bit dark for 4/5 year olds though.

You found it a hard watch as in you were scared??

Leftoverpizzaforbreakfast · 29/12/2022 19:23

I was all set to watch it on Christmas Day again too :(

EarringsandLipstick · 29/12/2022 19:28

You found it a hard watch as in you were scared??

Slightly tongue-in-cheek! I wasn't 'scared' as adult, no, but I found it a hard watch as the cruelty was very overt & difficult to view on that basis.

It was excellent; I just really hate horrible things happening to kids.

(And yes, I did know the plot; Emma Thompson is so intimidating & ruthless tho!)

TugboatAnnie · 29/12/2022 19:29

I'm seeing it tomorrow. I hope Emma Thompson is good as Pam Ferris was bloody brilliant.

I don’t quite know what to say 🤭 sweet.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 29/12/2022 19:37

Same as you OP. Apparently it’s on Netflix everywhere else in the world just not here.

stressbucket1 · 29/12/2022 19:41

I've seen that there is a sing along version coming out in the cinemas from New year's day. Might have to go again! I thought it was fabulous but was already familiar with the stage musical before we saw the film.

I personally think it more and age 6/7 up.

Caspianberg · 29/12/2022 19:46

Oh really? We watched it Christmas Day on Netflix.de. It was very good even though I wasn’t sure at the beginning about it being a musical.
You can probably sign up for .de Netflix in the uk as we can sign into the de or uk version here.

Caspianberg · 29/12/2022 19:47

@EezyOozy - Ds is 2 and he was in the room with us watching and didn’t mind it. There’s nothing scary in it.

Gingerlygreen · 29/12/2022 19:49

I thought it was out for Christmas in the UK too but probably read that on here.
We went to see it in the cinema with dds aged 7 and 9, the older one liked it but the younger one was bored from about halfway through.
I didn't think it was scary but it does go on a bit and can see why my youngest got fed up.

I took 20 Rainbows to see it, aged 4- nearly 7. They were all fine.

BrownEyedGhoul · 29/12/2022 19:57

Surely everyone knows that a film thats still in the cinema isn't going to be on Netflix at the same time?

SockFluffInTheBath · 29/12/2022 19:59

We saw it in the cinema yesterday and really enjoyed it. It’s one of DD15’s all time favourites, so it was part of her Christmas. We’ve seen a few stage productions over the years but never made the RSC one.

chipswitheveryting · 29/12/2022 20:04

I absolutely loved it!!

h78 · 29/12/2022 20:05

I've downloaded it whilst in Egypt because it was on their Netflix. Not sure why it's not on the uk one.
