Matilda Film

Did anyone else not realise that the film version of Matilda the musical wasn't being released on Netflix in the UK until next year? I was looking forward to watching it this afternoon. Is it just me?

I was expecting it on Netflix too but turns out it’s for the whole world except the UK. I saw it with kids and they loved it as did I. I think the songs made it feel less scary which the older version very much is. And I really felt uplifted after watching it. I liked the overall message about standing up for what is right and I thought the actress who played Matilda was very convincing

Bicurator · 28/12/2022 17:03

I took my son to see it last week so would have been annoyed if it was on Netflix now, I thought it was nice, I’m not a huge musical fan but still enjoyed it.

yellowbananasq · 28/12/2022 17:04

Use a VPN and you can watch it on Netflix.

Oh is it not on Netflix in the UK? I'd be disappointed too!

Watched it today and quite enjoyed it but I never liked the American film. Didn't mind the deviation from the book because it stayed true to the spirit of the book. The choreo was amazing as was the I do like Tim Minchin though.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 28/12/2022 17:22

It was definitely mis-advertised recently as being available on Netflix in the UK from 25th - we were looking forward to it.
We’re in France at the moment so was very pleased to find it pop up on my Netflix homepage.

PuttingDownRoots · 28/12/2022 17:58

I understand why it isn't in the UK... but having seen so many adverts for it being on Netflix this week it is annoying! We only get Netflix for a month or so here and there and wait until we have a list to watch.

ChocHotolate · 28/12/2022 18:04

So glad I'm not the only one who made this mistake

Yes! We were all set to watch it Xmas day.

Sux2buthen · 28/12/2022 18:18

No not just you. I can't afford the cinema for four of us and my kids were thrilled it was coming onto Netflix. Until I found out it's just everywhere else

ArmadilloExperience · 28/12/2022 18:22

Startuplife · 28/12/2022 16:25

Yes I’d Googled when it was going to be available and must have read an American article without realising because I thought it was Christmas Day. Was very disappointed we couldn’t watch it as planned this morning

Same!

yoshiblue · 28/12/2022 18:26

We loved it, though DS gave it 9/10 as there were a few deviations from the book. We also love the US film too.

mogtheexcellent · 28/12/2022 18:30

So annoyed. We restarted netflix especially for this. Sad obviously cancelling again but still paid out for the month.

Was definitely advertised as available on christmas day.

Abraxan · 28/12/2022 18:33

Yes, saw the adverts and at no point initially did it ever mention that Netflix UK and Ireland wasn't included, just everywhere else. Really annoying.

We didn't have chance to go to the cinema but have managed to watch it at home since. We really enjoyed it, but dd also enjoyed the musical in the theatre a few years back - went on a GCSE drama trip so she'd seen it but me/dh hadn't.

Yes, it's different to the 90s film version.
But it wasn't supposed to be a remake - it was a film of the musical theatre version, not another version of the film.

We enjoyed it.

Bicurator · 28/12/2022 18:35

It was the first time in ages I’ve seen a film at the cinema entirely sold out.

MichelleScarn · 28/12/2022 18:38

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 28/12/2022 16:20

By the "original" do you mean the 90s movie that was nothing like the book?

Our the actual original. The glorious book by Roald Dahl?

Because no, its nothing like the 90s American film. Its far far better.

Exactly! And a conversation I've had when people complain about the recent Charlie and the chocolate factory! Much more how RD would have wanted it!

Elsanore · 28/12/2022 18:42

I feel your pain, I got myself and dc all hyped up to watch it on Boxing Day. Big rigmarole, choosing chocolate from selection boxes, lining up teddies to "watch", arranging ourselves under blankets on the sofa... turn on Netflix, no Matilda!

Luckily DC accepted Bad Guys on Now tv.

AllOfThemWitches · 28/12/2022 16:32

It's absolutely full to the brim of ridiculously talented children (and adults, of course), fantastic choreography and great songs. It can hardly be compared to the original film as they are so different. Imagine dismissing it as 'rubbish,' tut.

Absolutely ..l went to see it yesterday and thought it was fabulous.

QuietYou · 28/12/2022 19:06

I wish I'd known it would be on Netflix as I'd not have bothered taking DC to the cinema to watch it.
The actors and songs were great but I thought the added storyline completely overshadowed the actual story, which was really disappointing for me.

EarringsandLipstick · 28/12/2022 19:48

I'm not sure when people think they saw it advertised as being on NF on Christmas Day? At least a month - 6 weeks ago (so about the time it was released in Irish cinemas anyway) it was clearly described as not due for release on NF in Ireland & UK until the summer.

It is fantastic. I actually didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped - precisely because it was so good! Matilda (fabulous Irish actress!) was really affecting, and Miss Trunchbull was really terrifying!

Sux2buthen · 28/12/2022 22:30

We think we saw it advertised for Netflix in the uk on the ads we saw for it funnily enough Grin

It was definitely on their general adverts and it was not clear that the U.K. and Ireland weren't included until much more recently.

To such an extent that there has been various articles across social media and TV guide type websites in the last couple of weeks highlighting the fact that it wouldn't available to the U.K.. simply because the advertising wasn't clear unless you clicked various links to read more.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/12/2022 15:42

It was definitely clear c 6 weeks ago, and I just went on the general ads too. But maybe I heard it mentioned or discussed somewhere else & that's how I picked it up? Not sure now.

Abraxan · 29/12/2022 15:53

Two Netflix adverts, both appearing on worldwide and U.K. social media.
Neither mention not available in U.K. unless you go further into the details or comments.

Alisha Weir is incredible in it ! Saw it here in Dublin yesterday and there was applause at the end . Maybe because she is a local girl???
I really was stunned by how good she is, both as an actress and singer .
Saw it live in London too, now want to see it again.
The music is wonderful !!

Willowswood · 29/12/2022 17:35

Saw it in the cinema today. OMG. It's absolutely FANTASTIC. I want to see it again.

It's called Matilda - The Musical, because it's based on the musical that you can see in the theatre, not the American film that was made in 1996.

Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull is so good!!! Loved all the other characters too, so many great songs, my favourite was Revolting Children which is at the end, absolutely amazing.
