Would you say something to someone if you knew they didn’t wash their hands after using the toilet?

On Christmas Day, my MIL Used the downstairs loo but didn’t wash her hands. I know this as our lounge is right beside the toilet and you can always hear the water running when the tap is on, which I didn’t hear. She went in, quickly went about her business, toilet flushed and out she came so it was very obvious.

I was going to ask her if she had forgot to wash her hands but I just couldn’t build the courage to do it! I had an audience and it would probably have looked liked I was starting an argument but I did feel somewhat uncomfortable with someone using the toilet, not washing their hands and then touching objects in my house.

if a guest in your house did this, would you just ignore it or would you just say it as it is?

Same - I rarely wash hands after a wee. My hands would get too dry plus I don't get wee in them or touch the toilet. I also don't really get ill, neither do my kids or DH, and I honestly think it due to not using tons of antibacterial spray or hand wash in our house every day.

nancydroo · 27/12/2022 20:38

I would ignore it. Bad form to mention it, which is why you didn't. Would get on with the day and not think on it again I imagine.

This thread reminds me of that Big Brother episode when the firefighter said that he always wees in the shower. Everyone was disgusted and he didn't know what all the fuss was about. Did she use your shower OP? 😂

Since becoming a support worker I've really noticed how much peoples hands stink if they don't wash their hands after a wee.. I can smell their wee, muskyness, BO, period. 🤢
I've never had this myself or with friends etc, my hands don't come into contact with my bits but it's best as a general rule for everyone to just wash them!

I did ODP training, and we were told about perineal fallout. So the people saying they don't piss on their hands when they wipe... your bits are still shedding skin cells.
FFS, wash your hands after you piss.

What do you think is going to happen to you all, sorry I don't get it

Norovirus. I'll spare you the details. Can you give me your number so I can call you if it happens again and the walls need cleaning?

last time I was off work 10 days, not all of us will bounce back. Then I can't see my elderly mother.

Except she’s spreading germs and fecal matter all over the house 🤮 some people who don’t wash their hands really outing themselves on this thread. This is why self service machines are so disgusting and covered in fecal matter.

Is she spreading faecal matter if she only had a wee? If she was, it would be from a very insanitary bathroom! I prefer people to wash their hands, but after a wee? You are being a drama Queen!

She's touched the loo, someone else might be carrying germs which she's now spreading all over the house.

EmmaAgain22 · 27/12/2022 20:50

Curious if the non handwashers were also the sort to believe a scotch egg would protect them from an airborne virus. My guess is there's a big overlap.

CointreauVersial · 27/12/2022 20:53

A bit dramatic. We all have immune systems, no?

EmmaAgain22 · 27/12/2022 20:56

Btw if anyone else is keen to avoid noro...just to check, you know alcohol based gel doesn't kill it.

just in case it spares anyone!

I would have said something.

i would have asked what the thought of the new expensive hand wash in the bathroom.

i work with people like that. Worse still they leave floaters. Dirty bitches

Don't be passive aggressive about it, rather just say something. Or don't.

christmascalypso · 27/12/2022 20:57

I think I read that the kitchen sink has more bacteria in it than the loo seat. There is bacteria everywhere in our houses, and it is good for our immune systems to have something to do each day otherwise autoimmune conditions can arise. According to research, some of the healthiest children lived on farms and were frequently covered in mud and dirt and other things! Yes it is good to try to wash your hands after going to the loo but I certainly wouldn't stress too much about it!!

CornishGem1975 · 27/12/2022 20:57

I wash my hands thoroughly and I've still had Norovirus two years on the bounce. Go figure.

IClaudine · 27/12/2022 20:58

It is absolutely gross not to wash your hands after using the loo, whether urinating or defecating. This is why I will never eat buffet food etc. 🤢 I am no cleanliness freak, but this is just basic hygiene.

CockwombleOfWimbledonIsCommon · 27/12/2022 21:05

I'd be more bothered by someone who referred to "toilet" and "lounge" than someone who didn't wash their hands after doing a pee (though that's pretty bad, too).

You could have picked it up because someone who doesn't wash their hands was spreading around. Hence, the keenness on handwashing. I've always been consudered a bit obsessive but post covid, I'm considered normal!

the supermarket looked like people only just discovered handwashing in March 2020.

I'm perfectly capable of having a wee without covering my hands in urine. Maybe MIL has this talent too. Washing your hands is of course polite, but unless your bathroom is filthy I don't see it's necessary from a hygiene point of view.

Do you not use toilet paper to wipe yourself? It’s not about putting your hands in the toilet, most people clean themselves afterwards. Therefore there will be germs on your hands.

CeriB82 · 27/12/2022 21:17

@frostyfours how difficult is it to ensure your shit flushes away? There is a poster on the doors to ask them to keep the loo clean and they still leave the shit there. When you’re in the next room you hear the flush and not the dryer.

washing your hands is basic hygiene. If you don’t do it after a visit to the bathroom, you’re a right minger🤢

Ravenrobin309 · 27/12/2022 21:23

@Kanaloa your comment made me laugh out loud. A toilet listener is definitely worse than a non washer.

A non hand washer bit dirty but a toilet listener is just weird !

Other peoples bodily fluids etc who used the toilet before you will be on the toilet handle because most people flush then wash their hands - you have no idea the state of the hands that touched the flush before you.

OttersMayHaveShiftedInTransit · 27/12/2022 21:30

you hear the flush and not the dryer

It is possible to wash but not use the dryer - I rarely use a drier as I will normally have something in my pocket/ bag that I can use to dry my hands.

TheRealShedSadie · 27/12/2022 21:34

Yes, and I have (sort of!)
Had a builder come and do some repairs during second lockdown. He used the downstairs loo and then walked straight through the kitchen to carry on working. I was standing in the doorway blocking his way out and asked if he’d like to use the anti bac soap and clean towel I’d left for him, and he said ‘No! You’re alright love!’

Cue my look of absolute undisguised horror and disgust. He meekly turned around and washed his hands in silence!

Shesasuperfreak · 27/12/2022 21:37

Thats grimey I would look at her with disgust.

anythinginapinch · 27/12/2022 21:47

WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE.

your FIL brought up a healthy child. Your MIL is not spreading the shots everywhere she goes. Bloody hell. A quick wee - I don't bother washing. Frankly I can wipe without getting wet

I agree. Completely different if you have a poo or are on your period and get blood all over you, of course. But presumably the OP's MIL is beyond the period stage.

It's different when you are out, but not when you are at home unless you are going to prepare food for other people.

And when you are out, half the time you can't get near a sink because people are doing hair, make-up, etc, or, if you can the water is cold and you can't dry your hands because the hand dryers are so rubbish, so you may as well just use sanitiser.

And fridges have more germs in them than toilets generally do. And the worst of all is probably the humble mobile phone!
