Would you say something to someone if you knew they didn’t wash their hands after using the toilet?

On Christmas Day, my MIL Used the downstairs loo but didn’t wash her hands. I know this as our lounge is right beside the toilet and you can always hear the water running when the tap is on, which I didn’t hear. She went in, quickly went about her business, toilet flushed and out she came so it was very obvious.

I was going to ask her if she had forgot to wash her hands but I just couldn’t build the courage to do it! I had an audience and it would probably have looked liked I was starting an argument but I did feel somewhat uncomfortable with someone using the toilet, not washing their hands and then touching objects in my house.

if a guest in your house did this, would you just ignore it or would you just say it as it is?

It’s not. It’s disgusting to not wash your hands.

I think she meant she wouldn't bring it up even though it is disgusting not to wash your hands

KillerRobotCompetition · 27/12/2022 18:50

Teen has a friend who doesn’t wash hands. I find myself going in and spraying flash bleach on a tissue and wiping taps, flush, door handle & light pull. It’s just gross.

@XenoBitch what on earth did he say?! I’m not brave enough to mention it.

I brought it up when he was complaining about other people leaving muddy handprints in his old work van.
I asked what scent the soap was in the bathroom. He got it wrong.
He is horribly manipulative though, and can turn things around so you end up feeling bad for pointing out a truth. This time was "I know you think I am the most disgusting person on the planet" etc, and he gets in a piss.

Had to sit in in laws house yesterday watching FIL pick his brains out through both nostrils 🤮 I was nearly sick.

amylou8 · 27/12/2022 19:22

I'm perfectly capable of having a wee without covering my hands in urine. Maybe MIL has this talent too. Washing your hands is of course polite, but unless your bathroom is filthy I don't see it's necessary from a hygiene point of view.

But, you’ve just touched the toilet, which there are probably germs on. So why not just wash your hands?

Could she have had anti bac with her? I don't wash my hands in public/family toilets as I have eczema and find some hand washes and soaps cause flare ups it's hard to know which do so I tend to take anti bac with me either stashed in a pocket or bag.

CornishGem1975 · 27/12/2022 19:53

@asblindasabat How do you touch the toilet with your hands? The flush yes, but the toilet? I never put the lid down Confused but I have a toddler who'd piss himself if it were down all the time. Agree that it's gross but I could hardly get het up about it as it doesn't really affect my life. Que sera.

Agreed. I give mine a courtesy rinse after a wee but would only do a proper wash with soap if I actually touched bodily fluids or my genitals, which I generally don't. People on Mumsnet are generally super weird about germs though. Me and my kids rarely get ill (can't remember any of them having a tummy bug in the past 8 years), I reckon because they've never lived in a house where everything is germfree all the time.

But you have a hand up in your genital area when you wipe.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 27/12/2022 20:02

It doesn't even come up to my mind, tbh. It's quite weird if you couldn't see what she was doing in the toilet but ask her if she forgot to wash her hands. Like you are listening consiously.

MakeWayMoana · 27/12/2022 20:06

I can’t wash my hands every time I go to the toilet, I have a skin condition on my hands which reacts to water so if I washed my hands every time I would have open sores constantly.

As I don’t wee on my hands, I’d rather you think I was disgusting than be in pain all the time.

You don't put the lid down....🤮

Germolenequeen · 27/12/2022 20:16

Hands should be washed after flushing the toilet regardless of what was done - toilet handles are germ infested 🤢

Some people are totally gross 😑

Why don’t you just carry your own soap supply? Anti bac is in no way a substitute for washing hands. It’s also hard in hands that have eczema! You can wash them with emollient if
necessary

NoelleSnowman · 27/12/2022 20:21

My MIL doesn’t wash her hands either. I call her out on it each and every time.

If she’s going to be dirty and not care then I don’t care if it embarrasses her 🤷‍♀️

Fuckinora · 27/12/2022 20:21

My son's girlfriend never washes her hands and it's driving me nuts, small apartment and thin walls so easy to hear everything in the next room. I have contamination ocd and really struggling to cope with her visits. I've started wearing earphones and listening to loud music whenever she's here so that I'm less aware of her going in to the bathroom. It's helping a bit and I'm not obsessively cleaning as much while she's here and after she leaves.

So to answer your question, no I wouldn't say anything because I'm far too cowardly but I will silently seethe and judge 😂

YouTarzan · 27/12/2022 20:24

She probably didn’t get any piss on her hands, so thought it unnecessary.

YouTarzan · 27/12/2022 20:25

And no... I would not say anything. That would be weird.

nancydroo · 27/12/2022 20:26

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 27/12/2022 17:56

Nah, unless she was splashing about in her urine stream I'm sure it's fine......gross.....but hardly world endingly gross.

😂🤣

RocketIceLollie · 27/12/2022 20:28

I wouldn't say anything just for no drama but I'd probably think twice about a dinner invite to her's from now if that's her basis hygiene. I mean you have to be really lazy to not bother washing your hands after using the loo.

Clymene · 27/12/2022 20:28

Of course you shouldn't say anything. She's an adult, not a child. And probably very capable of peeing without getting piss all over her hands.

StarDolphins · 27/12/2022 20:30

I don’t always wash my hands after a wee, I always antibac though & I always wash before preparing food etc

Lincolnremain · 27/12/2022 20:33

I hardly ever wash my hands after a wee, I don't touch my genitals, just tissue. Always wash after a poo though.
Never get ill. Call me rank but that is the truth of it

Lincolnremain · 27/12/2022 20:35

What do you think is going to happen to you all, sorry I don't get it
