Covid should we BAN flights Etc From China?

I've tried to ignore the news but it's all over the media now and they are saying what I am fearing, ie
massive new and bigger wave of a new variant and back to square one

This, every government are careless and always act the horse has bolted.

At least if we banned flights direct/indirect people that have been in/to China, if anyhting new comes it could be better managed IMO

Would you agree with me?

could
potentially

At the moment it seems it’s awful in China because they have inferior vaccines and little previous infection to give immunity. They aren’t saying the virus has mutated yet.

Pixiedust1234 · 23/12/2022 11:57

I think we should learn from our mistakes and put a ban in place until we know more.

Particularly which varient(s) and whether any of the current covid vaccines give any protection against it. Our hospitals are already collapsing with our own strains, flu and rsv as it is.

Gooseysgirl · 23/12/2022 11:58

It's waaaaay too late for that. Lots of people just don't care anymore here. I sat on a tube carriage of probably about 200 people yesterday and I was the only one wearing a mask. I'm trying to avoid catching it due to immunosuppressed MIL.

HomeAGnome · 23/12/2022 12:01

Yes they should IMO but won't because we do too much business with China

Hbh17 · 23/12/2022 12:03

FFFS, no! The last few years have shown clearly that bans, lockdowns and masks are counterproductive. We must never go down that route again.
We now have effective vaccinations and so Covid is no longer a serious illness. Let's just crack on with life as normal.

Sixofseven · 23/12/2022 12:04

It’s Daily Mail fear mongering.

July70 · 23/12/2022 12:05

Sorry, edited OP to make more sense - but on the whole its the same.

a massive new and bigger wave of a new variant possible and back to square one

Not, it's not just them. I often ignore the daily Express and Mail but others have the news.

It's ongoing, its big and getting bigger

I'm aware that when tens of millions get this Covid at the same time it changes.

I bet you the gov are on their hols and when everything goes properly belly up, they will have their excuses and will be certainly "ramping up" the BS

I have tried not to read about the Flu taking up mass of beds in the UK on an unprecdecdent level.

Therefore, the idiots in number 10 need to do something, even now is not too late

What's the third F for?

(misses the point of the thread)

piglet81 · 23/12/2022 12:09

I don’t agree with you, and I definitely don’t agree with the Daily Mail. Take what precautions you want for yourself and your family, but as a society we need to move forward.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 23/12/2022 12:09

Well, they stopped direct flights to the UK last time my husband was in China. All it meant was he had to go a none direct route to get home, so potentially pick up variants in a third continent, and mix with loads more people (as well as cause a great deal of stress and expense for us). Can't really see the benifit.
Better to have a comprehensive testing on departure and arrival (so 12 ish hours apart), imo.

midgetastic · 23/12/2022 12:09

Well we could just as easily develop our own nasty variety

No need to panic

It would be far more effective if people got guaranteed sick pay

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 23/12/2022 12:12

For a moment there I thought I'd gone back in time to February 2020.

MichelleScarn · 23/12/2022 12:17

Same @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss I thought I'd accidentally opened one of those 'you might be interested in' zombies! Was awaiting the 'just saw my neighbours daughter visit when her son came yesterday, should I report?' posts!

Puuy · 23/12/2022 12:23

Banning one country does nothing, people just go via third countries and varients quickly will move over borders regardless as people travel, so unless we're going to ban every flight (fuck no) it's pointless.
We have quick tests, vaccines, better treatment, it's not 2020 and it's possible to be sensible without banning flights or locking down.

SirMingeALot · 23/12/2022 12:24

It would do the absolute square root of fuck all OP, because covid is near enough everywhere now and certainly all over the UK. We're about three years past the point where that policy could possibly have achieved anything.

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2022 12:24

They've got a very low vaccination rate and abandoned zero Covid strategy overnight 2 weeks ago.

That's why they've got a surge.

It'll be grim over there for several weeks but we shouldn't notice much difference here.

DomesticShortHair · 23/12/2022 12:29

I agree completely OP. And we should ban coloured Christmas tree lights. And Tuesdays. And badgers. And coffee Revels. And Bananarama. And leaving the TV volume on an odd number. And foods that are difficult to spell (Spag Bol escapes on a technicality). And the hot air blowers over the doors of shops that blast warm air down your neck as you leave, but then makes you feel twice as cold once you’re outside. And dressage. And jokes about people called Brian.

Sorry OP. I realise I’m being ridiculous. But to be fair, you started it.

Rickandmortified100 · 23/12/2022 12:30

😂 Don’t believe everything you see in the news. I am in China now and just got covid, along with all my colleagues and students. Is there an outbreak of omicron? Sure. Is it as bad as they’re saying in the media? No. Literally all of my students had either no symptoms or just extremely mild cold symptoms. Literally every single adult had a cold. I know nobody who had serious symptoms, know nobody who has died, know nobody who knows anyone who has died. If you see the Chinese news, it tells you the exact same thing about western countries. Truth is, it’s fine. Yes some people have died - extremely elderly and vulnerable people, like in all countries. It’s funny to read the hysteria on the news. It’s just not true. Hospitals are functioning normally and life is just… going on. The one thing living abroad has taught me is to always question the media!

CharityShopChic · 23/12/2022 12:31

Oh give over.

It's like being back in February 2020.

The covid board is -> that way. Away over there and scaremonger with the rest of them. Leave the rest of us in peace.

Puuy · 23/12/2022 12:32

And coffee Revels
I support this ban.

BringBackFoilWrappers · 23/12/2022 12:32

If there's one thing I've learned is that lockdowns were a big mistake.
Look at the strep outbreaks, kids now have no immunity.
You can isolate all you like but we have a limited amount of time in this planet and I'm not going to spend it cowering in my house like the boogeyman is coming.

Rickandmortified100 · 23/12/2022 12:33

Actually, to be honest, the one conversation I have had over and over again with my Chinese friends and colleagues is a shocked conversation about how mild covid is! After 3 years of lockdowns and worrying about it, everyone is so surprised to experience it for themselves and find it to be little more than a seasonal cold!

SirMingeALot · 23/12/2022 12:33

Puuy · 23/12/2022 12:32

And coffee Revels
I support this ban.

Actually yeah, I'm opposed to any restrictions in respect of covid now but coffee revels should be subjected to mandatory quarantine. Ew.
