I've tried to ignore the news but it's all over the media now and they are saying what I am fearing, ie
massive new and bigger wave of a new variant and back to square one

This, every government are careless and always act the horse has bolted.

At least if we banned flights direct/indirect people that have been in/to China, if anyhting new comes it could be better managed IMO

Would you agree with me?

I'm good at telling whether it's going to be a toffee or a flavoured revel from looking, but the only way to distinguish coffee and orange is by smell... and I only have about a 50% success rate there. Legislation is called for.

Yes, legislation to stop the abhorrence of orange chocolate.

FFS please stay on topic of p off

I think the reason why the thread derailed so quickly proves the lack of concern in relation to threat.

I’m a teacher. I’ve had Covid and currently have Covid again so another Xmas “ruined”. What can we actively do to stop a virus? Yes I feel awful. 3 days ago I couldn’t even look at my phone at my bones aches so much. I’m now on my sofa. I’ll be fine by Xmas day I’m sure. My kids have had covid twice. We can’t put life on hold for what for the majority will be an u pleasant virus.

Now, can we ban coffee Revels?

INTOLERABLE.

Topics? We’re talking about Revels, not Topics.

Can you still buy a Topic? I loved those! And I could actually eat one right now despite not tasting anything.

DomesticShortHair · 23/12/2022 13:40

And then amuse yourself by trying to get tiny bits of bastard hazelnut out from between your teeth for the next two hours, only using your tongue. They are the gift that keeps on giving.

MrsMurphyIWish · 23/12/2022 13:40

Also, my kids love “Covid mummy” as they get unlimited screen time and eat toast. I think they’d welcome the new virus.

RedToothBrush · 23/12/2022 13:40

I think they should isolate all the loons who are advocating travel bans for covid at this stage.

What we learnt in 2020 was that if there is a problem you have to action very strict controls very early on and by the time you realise there is a problem, the ship has long since sailed.

We have learn in 2022 that long term zero covid laws didn't work even in the strictest, most authoritarian and technical surveillance state in the world. It led to such a break down in law and order the government were forced into a massive policy reversal in a population with no natural immunity and poor vaccine immunity. All the efforts of the past two years will go to complete shit in the next two months as a result as China, was unwilling to use the time effectively to protect the population better with effective vaccines because of warped nationalistic policies.

You can only ban travel to your own country not travel out of another state, so how does anyone propose that a travel ban will stop the problem spreading indirectly through third party countries?

Its widely believed that bans from China were pointless because by the time they happened covid established itself in Northern italy/Austrian ski resorts before anyone realised what was going on.

Its estimated that there were at least 10,000 cases in the US before the first covid case was positively identified.

If there is another rogue variant then lock downs won't stop shit. We need quicker turn around on vaccine development and production not lock downs / travel bans.

I have nothing else to do. It’ll be the most exercise in be had in a week.

Anyone bragging about how Sweden have handled the whole shebang the last three years. Just go look at their figures on the world ometer site. They're suffering.

We're not counting much in the UK it seems

Haven't seen a Topic in ages! What about a Picnic instead?

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 23/12/2022 13:44

I thought the coffee ones were no more already...oh nooo

Eating a topic is no picnic, due to the aforementioned bits of bastard hazelnuts, excellent exercise opportunities aside.

China never shut down the students. Kerching.

DS was at university 2019 January 2020 students returned from China ill. Swept through all the halls many very sick students before we knew what it was. This happened every bloody term. They were never banned. Unlike my DS and others who were sent home. Second year he was in halls seven bed flat five were set aside as isolation rooms for Chinese students to use. They never stayed there. He's had covid four times. Despite three jabs as did others.

So no they'll never ban movement

If there's one thing I've learned is that lockdowns were a big mistake.
Look at the strep outbreaks, kids now have no immunity.
You can isolate all you like but we have a limited amount of time in this planet and I'm not going to spend it cowering in my house like the boogeyman is coming.

I wholeheartedly agree 👏🏻👏🏻

Barbadossunset · 23/12/2022 14:12

No it's discrimitory and won't work and also it's simply impossible.

whoam100 the Chinese have banned direct flights to UK from China. Do you think they are discriminatory?

notimagain · 23/12/2022 14:14

July70 · 23/12/2022 13:29

FFS, I covered the indirect access and more.

here
"if we banned flights direct/indirect people that have been in/to China,"

Ok, fair enough but how do you do that, how do you police it?

It's easy to identify a flight that arrives UK from China non-stop, or a flight, if there are any these days, that's a direct (i.e. from China, no aircraft change but a transit stop enroute).

OTOH it gets more difficult with identifying individual passengers who have maybe flown with a Chinese airline to, for example Seoul and then connected so arrives in London on KAL, or connects via Singapore and arrives with SIA or flies into Rome with a Chinese airline and then connects into London with for example Alitalia or BA. Umpteen other options are available...

Even if you do "weed" those bespoke individuals out at say Heathrow immigration they've already been sat next to other arriving passengers at the intermediate airport and on the final flight......

As I see it if you want a watertight quarantine you need to get China to restrict or even ban all those departing China ...or you have to put in quarantine for all UK arrivals, regardless of their provenance...anything else is window dressing (not that that has stopped politicians before...)...

And we've been down that road before..............................

The Chinese state does have a bit of form for being discriminatory, yes.

Carol Ann Duffy had it right in Chocs...

Into the half-pound box of
Moonlight
my small hand crept,
There was an electrifying rustle.
There was a dark and glamorous scent.
Into my open, religious mouth
the first Marzipan Moment went.
Down in the crinkly second layer
five finger-piglets snuffled
among the Hazelnut Whirl,
the Caramel Swirl,
the Black Cherry and Almond Truffle.
Bliss.
I chomped, I gorged,
I stuffed my face,
till only the Coffee Cream
was left for the owner of the box -

tough luck, Ann Pope -
oh, and half an Orange Supreme.

Same @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss I thought I'd accidentally opened one of those 'you might be interested in' zombies! Was awaiting the 'just saw my neighbours daughter visit when her son came yesterday, should I report?' posts!

Hahaha! I thought the same thing!
