Covid should we BAN flights Etc From China?

I've tried to ignore the news but it's all over the media now and they are saying what I am fearing, ie
massive new and bigger wave of a new variant and back to square one

This, every government are careless and always act the horse has bolted.

At least if we banned flights direct/indirect people that have been in/to China, if anyhting new comes it could be better managed IMO

Would you agree with me?

OP: Should we control flights from China while we see what's going on?

Mumsnet: OMG WE CAN'T TAKE ANOTHER LOCKDOWN. WE'LL ALL DIE

If you're summarising, there've been more posts on this thread about chocolate than lockdown.

I'm glad that many find it funny. Perhaps you want to check the news about Covid and flu in England and the pressures on NHS before you mock the serious situation like the PM in 2019 and 2020

I am more concerned about the dishonesty. I really don't know why the Chinese govt lies on the scale it does. That really worries me as I don't think they can be trusted to be level with us about future viruses. Hopefully this is just Omicron with little scope to mutate. But they are clearly still in full-on denial mode.

July70 · 23/12/2022 20:48

It's not just the China gov that "lies" but worse than that the dangerous clowns WHO
that we pay around 30 mill a year failed and failed in a deadly way to alert the world as they were there investigating and told the world not to worry

Why is my money being used to fund WHO??

The fact that many find it funny, and are more concerned about coffee Revels, is actually the serious response to your post. It’s just not the one you wanted that’s all.

The Chinese government lie because they're a paranoid, authoritarian regime and that's what paranoid authoritarian regimes do. It's not because of any level of trust in them that we know a flight ban is a stupid idea three years past any possibility of working. But they're not quite in full on denial mode, because the realisation that zero covid has failed is actually evidence of having woken up and smelled the coffee.

hellycat · 23/12/2022 21:24

I mean that they are denying the scale of the impact on hospitals and the deaths, despite the evidence leaking out to the contrary. As a regime, it makes them look increasingly deranged. Or maybe not 'increasingly', the Chinese communists have been covering up humanitarian disasters since the days of the famine. Nothing's changed.

July70 · 27/12/2022 14:47

People I've spoken to are demanding that England banks all that have been in China and trying to come to the uk and if they are allowed they must be quarantined for 10/14 days at their own expense.

So I’ll ask again…how are you (or the people you supposedly spoke to) planning to implement such a scheme……?

I take it you understand that to be even close to 100% effective it would almost certainly mean a return to specific airport terminals for the few flights arriving from China, and also screening of all UK arrivals, regardless of where they were arriving from and regardless of their mode of arrival (air/ferry/train) to catch anyone arriving by an indirect route.

July70 · 28/12/2022 16:36

This thread I started a few days ago, the media is now in on it as it was the main news on BBC News 24, IE & press

www.theguardian.com/world/2022/dec/28/chinas-move-to-open-up-travel-sparks-concern-over-spread-of-new-covid-variants

Not to worry, our lot will do something and "ramp up" measures as per usual and too late.

Controlled as I want it to be will keep a lot of pressure off the NHS etc

Will be interesting to see how this thread pans out given tonight’s news about USA bringing in a testing requirement and the EU looking like they might follow suit.

TokyoSushi · 28/12/2022 22:00

I'm not sure what I think yet but just checking in to join the thread.

Kokeshi123 · 29/12/2022 08:34

I routinely wow people by being able to work out the flavor of Revels in advance by weighing them on the palm of my hand.

LlynTegid · 29/12/2022 08:38

There should be a testing requirement. The US is right on this one I think.

notimagain · 29/12/2022 08:53

LlynTegid · 29/12/2022 08:38

There should be a testing requirement. The US is right on this one I think.

Part of the CDC Press release on that since it gives details of who will be tested:

"......The requirement applies to these air passengers regardless of nationality and vaccination status.

"This will also apply to persons traveling from the PRC via third country transit and to passengers connecting through the United States onward to further destinations."

"Along with applying this requirement to direct flights from the PRC, passengers transiting Incheon International Airport, Toronto Pearson International Airport, and Vancouver International Airport on their way to the United States will be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test if they have been in the PRC in the last 10 days no more than 2 days before their departure to the United States. These three transit hubs cover the overwhelming majority of passengers with travel originating in the PRC and the Special Administrative Regions."

Fairly comprehensive, my and it looks like they have tried to account at least to some degree for those arriving indirect.

I really do think the focus should be shifted to deal with the more important task of banning coffee revels! Does ANYONE like them?!

I like them 😳

SirMingeALot · 29/12/2022 09:21

I don't think you're going to get any disagreement that if Omicron waves could be controlled, there'd be much less pressure on the NHS. It's just that your policy proposal wouldn't do that.

July70 · 29/12/2022 09:25

Hi

I blame others as well other than thr gov. The people of the uK appear to trust gevenments even though over the last ten years or so it is easier for the ordinary person to get at the truth via media on the net.

China and WHO cannot be trusted, nor can our gove be trusted. Write to your lazy MP and demand action is taken eG all those that have been in China the last 2 weeks before coming to the uk are double vaccinated and quarantined for at least 10 days at their own costs.

As I said, it won't stop the influx but the nhs already crashing will have a better chance of managing

We have provided, flu and the strep A and heck knows what else and all most are doing is herding into fake sales and pubs etc and spreading the virus

This nes is going to get very big within 48 hours and our little man in numbet
10 will come out or wheel our a useless minister

I had to turn the news off yesterday evening as it suddenly felt like covid groundhog day/year. Not sure how worried we should be, but this is concerning.

www.airfinity.com/articles/chinas-covid-19-wave-forecast-to-have-two-peaks-where-cases-could-reach-4-2

I think our own government is less than transparent about covid right now too.

notimagain · 29/12/2022 10:09

So again the question is how do you police such a policy?

Just a guess, but if you bring that sort of draconian rule set in right now, for those coming from China only, here is what will possibly happen:

  • Passenger starts their journey in China, flies to US/Italy/Japan/France (you can name pretty much any country of your choice).

Takes a break there of several hours, maybe even several days.

Then flies/even possibly drives or takes a train to UK.

On arrival at UK they lie about their travel history- being in China in last two weeks doesn't get a mention ..........free pass into the UK.

IMO testing regimes that have been announced in that last few days by a couple of countries are a proportionate response, and they probably aren't going to encourage individuals to try and do an end run around the restrictions.

So you want England to Surrender to the lies, total lies from China like last time?

Of course it wont be perfect but you have ignored the part of my post that stated the nhs would better mange

Thanks. We went out yesterday but to a place of worship no masks but the day before at Mataln , about 10% were wearing masks. DH won't but I will if we go out today but tBH, I'm scared not just of Covid but Strep A and flu as well
We have all the jabs

Lets all hope and pray we don't get what we had last year and earlier this year

verystablegenius · 29/12/2022 10:29

Watching with interest. I’m not sure what the value is, if variants spread anyway, and Covid is circulating freely in the UK.
