Thread 3 - TalkExiles: "The Planet Goes On Being Round"

Continuation of previous lifeboat threads 1 and 2.

Gather here all ye refugees from the JTT Flat Earth Society, welcome to the reassuringly oblate spheroid of MN! Ye all already know the answers to the questions "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

So really we're all here just to chat randomly.

Today I needed to reapply for my driving licence (old git). Had the form through the post, but thought I'd have a go at doing it online. Go to Google, put in gov. uk/what ever. Click on the li K, and away we go. And they want identity details, passport number, NI number, etc. Eventually get to the end, and it's Enter card number... And I'm, WTF, there's no charge. Because its not the official gov. uk site, its another. So exited out of that, found the gov site, and went through the whole charade again. The official site had much worse GUI!

It's not so much that its a scam. It's that it's a sanctioned scam. These sites clearly have approval from DVLA. There is no justification whatever. Its a cheap grift that has Grant Shapps written all over it.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/01/2023 14:54

Those kind of things are common - not technically illegal I think as they are charging you for "admin" - eg directing your application to the correct site.

It is rubbish and can catch people unaware.

duc748 · 12/01/2023 14:58

The gov could put a stop to it if they wanted. It stinks. They were going to charge me £0 now, but £86 if I failed to cancel. Someone somewhere got a fat back-hander.

My girl is a budding Jaqueline Wilson fan, more so after she discovered that her Russian speaking older cousins read her, in Russian.

I've been busy, too. A bit of skiving here, as well. Hoovered downstairs, after picking up a carrier bag of litter, including sweet wrappers, discs from party poppers, bits of artificial Xmas tree and tinsel, a couple of bags from parcel deliveries (not mine)! Washed the wood floor in the hall and dining room.

A load of washing up, plus emptying the dishwasher and re-washing a pan and muffin tin. Washed the kitchen down and put lots of crap away.

Sorted the fireplace. Fetched coal and logs, cut a load of pallet wood and chopped it for kindling, moved half the log pile to an area of easier access.

I'm puffed! I didn't even include the 45 minute dog walk in the morning!

I look at a mycology group on FB and there's a post discussing a very mouldy Black Forest Gateau. This comment is just heart warming:

A cup of coco with 2cm left in the bottom of the cup is an excellent substrate for moulds. I once left a teapot with a floating teabag while I went on holiday. When I came back there were three species on the still floating bag and one turned out to be only the third record for Britain. As it was a species from the Indian continent, the spores were probably in the tea and an air pocket in the bag protected it from the boiling water.

Tricyrtis2022 · 12/01/2023 17:40

Sounds like a good day's work there, Sinner!

Sounds like a good day's work there, Sinner!

I just went steady at it.

SinnerBoy · 12/01/2023 18:22

And I like your mycology bit. My daughter is fascinated and took photos of a dozen or so types, on decaying logs, when we took her out, last week.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 00:45

I've just watched the remake of Point Break. It makes the original look plausible, coherent, emotionally sophisticated, and brilliantly acted.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 08:26

One to read in a private place: www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4718022-can-you-do-this-with-your-head

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 08:26

Haha! I don't have a groove. I have a flat/concave circle on the back of my skull, which overall contributes to my head being quite flat (I used to feel quite self-conscious about it because it was really obvious when I had short hair or if I put long hair up in a pony tail). So I was a bit surprised to read on that thread that some other people have this feature too.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 08:46

Where the spine goes in, or elsewhere?

I have a tangible, but not visible, groove from the point of my hairline to the inside end of my right eyebrow.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 08:52

It's bern a while since I handled skulls, but I couldn't remember a suture line there. Seem that frontal one usually disappears by the age of 6. Can fell a little bit of the coronal.sutures as well - deeper on the right, might be visible if I shaved my head.

Kucinghitam · 13/01/2023 08:59

I can't remember where the various suture lines are either. I'd guess that the flat/concave part of my skull is around the region of the posterior fontanelle. Overall though, I think my skull is just kind of flattish, I've always felt I look weird in side view.

SinnerBoy · 13/01/2023 11:57

I've got a shallow dent, which runs transverse, from above one ear to the other. It's three fingers wide.

We've got a builder coming on Monday, to do our bathroom and toilet. I've done two stints of getting tiles off in the toilet and am about 75% finished. I have hurt my back, pulled a muscle in my side, cramp in both hands and six or seven cuts, shared between both hands.

That's five 25 kg rubble bags full, so far.

Britinme · 13/01/2023 12:09

I'm sitting in bed reading this on my iPad and fondling my skull, which has dents all over the place. Luckily himself is still snoring.

Dotellhimpike · 13/01/2023 12:18

Having just checked, I have no dents, grooves, or other imperfections in my perfectly formed cranium. On the other hand my head is fucking huge, like so big I've never found a hat that fits.

IReallyLikeCrows · 13/01/2023 12:28

My skull is smooth and also quite nicely shaped which I realised - thankfully - when I shaved my head

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 12:47

@SinnerBoy surely your builder should be doing that as part of the refit?

SinnerBoy · 13/01/2023 12:48

It's to keep costs down.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 13/01/2023 13:07

Shout out to @SqueakyDinosaur . Your physio experiences may be useful over on www.mumsnet.com/talk/womens_rights/3630558-Just-me-asking-for-some-advice-please?page=2

SinnerBoy · 13/01/2023 14:37

Right, that's me done with that for the day. Just a few left behind the toilet, I've smashed the corner off the cistern lid, a bit of tile hit it; I don't want to smash the bowl, so I'll leave that for the builders!

Tricyrtis2022 · 13/01/2023 15:34

When we re-did the bathroom the tiles pretty much fell off by themselves. I was so glad to see them go. We replaced them with plain white tiles which is bright and clean.

These are the old tiles, put up in about 1984 -
