So the NHS has long gone

At what point do we think the government will do something about the massive elephant in the room the NHS has fucked off out of the window and is never returning.

This healthcare no man’s land is quite frankly terrifying. What are your predictions on this? All I keep reading is “it will get worse”. Can it actually get any worse?

The nhs has not gone

It has been starved
It has been kicked in the balls
But it is staggering on

It could be fixed
But not if you would rather an every man for himself private profit making system

Timeforabiscuit · 19/12/2022 15:38

NHS is not gone, DH had a surgery and treatment over the last year which most of the world wouldn't have access to or would have bankrupted a household.

He is now back at work, but more importantly he's still with us.

DarkKarmaIlama · 19/12/2022 15:39

@midgetastic

Of course I don’t want that. Why would you presume that? But this no man’s land is absolutely awful. I presume this is part of the plan. Bleed it to death so much we will all be grateful for when the American style system comes in …… god it’s depressing. Do you really think it can be fixed? I don’t, I don’t have faith in this gov or labour tbh.

Well I still work for the NHS. Last time I checked it hadn’t gone!

Vinvertebrate · 19/12/2022 15:41

It is terrifying now. I realized the gig was up in 2006 when I had to sue two different bits of it over negligent care. They were belligerent, dishonest, prevaricated at every turn and used lawyers that charged 3 times as much as mine - before settling/admitting. Pure communist 101 spite.

I’m somewhat relieved that others are now realizing and was heartened to hear Sajid Javid admit it’s a dead/dying duck. I hope (but don’t expect) we can eventually adopt a European social insurance system.

I am happy to pay more, but not for more NHS -it’s had enough cracks at killing me and mine. Time to end British exceptionalism in healthcare - the French and Germans do it much better.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 19/12/2022 15:42

Why is it always presented as a choice between the NHS or the American system? why not the French system, or the German or the Dutch or the Australian?

FriedEggChocolate · 19/12/2022 15:43

The current government don't want us to have a NHS, so it's funded and looks like it does. Three year waits for a hip replacement etc.

Can it get worse? Why not, the government like a challenge.....

DarkKarmaIlama · 19/12/2022 15:44

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain

Because I presume those systems mean less profit 😢.

Its a lottery, your DH had that, many do not.

There will be an increase in private insurance, private doing nhs work and staff moving across to take up demand, both parties support this.

The NHS will become a emergency service only, much like nhs dentistry is already.

We tolerate 7m on waiting lists, why not 14m ? atm there is no out cry even when they all go on strike because of Govt action or lack of.

even on MN there is nothing really on the nhs strikes or maternity scandals - more posts on Meghan or Xmas

Imperfect10 · 19/12/2022 15:45

the french and german systems have way more doctors per capita and ditto other health care workers.

The NHS could work if it was staffed and paid correctly

The European (excellent) systems won't work if there aren't enough people.

For any system to work for everyone (and not just the privileged few) there has to be workforce planning and a long term strategy. This is what is missing.

Or maybe some people want to frighten us into thinking the American one is the only choice and we'd better hang on to what we've got, however much we have to keep giving it.

True but all of those systems have far more staff and equipment, where will you conjure them up from?

We ve shortages of staff in many far better paid sectors and less and less young people more and more old people.

Same here. Working as an AHP in Scotland and still here.

Vinvertebrate · 19/12/2022 15:49

Absolutely @Imperfect10 we need many more doctors, preferably FT ones. But it’s more than that imo - it’s the choice of provider. When you’re the only gig in town - like the NHS or any monopoly - then it’s too easy just to make patients wait. The money needs to follow the patient - otherwise the incentive is to do as little as possible. Private services do not always exist - I had to go to the ombudsman over DS’ care even though we had the money to go private. It just didn’t happen no matter how long we waited and there is no private pediatric service here.

I loved the Swiss system but it’s impractical for our population size and health complexities I suspect.

Sad but true. Keep clapping even while granny is drinking from a vase in a bed full of her own piss.

Fifi00 · 19/12/2022 15:50

I think our politicians need to be honest with us and admit the NHS is failing and no it won't exist as it does now . They should do a consultation about what our health service might look like , I like the German , French , Singaporean and Australian systems. If we wait until it implodes to sort we might end up with something like the American one.

I think non negotiables should be discussed. Children's healthcare should be free or very very cheap they are our future. In Singapore it cost 10 SGD £5 and my daughter was seen straightaway no waiting in a&e. Part of your salary is taken for a personal healthcare fund , care when you get old and even towards a deposit for a house.

Moving towards a mixed system means more pay for the HCPs, means more people will want to train.

This!

I work for the NHS. Many services are at breaking point because of consistent and deliberate underfunding. It's still very much struggling on though - at the detriment often of the staff who are making all manner of personal sacrifices to try to ensure patients still receive the services they require.

safetyfreak · 19/12/2022 15:56

How will going private save the NHS?

We need new doctors urgently-how will going private make a difference? we all know the NHS over the decade has been slowly starved and taken apart.

BabyFour2023 · 19/12/2022 15:56

Many trusts are still functioning fine. Don’t believe everything you hear or see in the media.

Fifi00 · 19/12/2022 15:56

I don't understand how it's sustainable now Vs when it was started. You have people now living in very poor health for in excess of 10 years with multiple co-morbidities and 24/7 care needs. In the 1940s they would have died relatively quickly medicine has moved such a long way. It's very expensive to fund we have more over 65 than under 16s!!

DarkKarmaIlama · 19/12/2022 15:57

My mum and sister are nurses but they trained under the old bursary style system. I would have completed my training happily but I just cannot afford too now. I did a health and social care degree instead via the OU instead which is probably useless in the grand scheme of things. Apologies for the pity party. I just feel like there’s no return now and that ultimately things will get so bad that we will all be relieved when it’s finally sunk.

More people will want to train, many people apply for medicine but there's not enough places. The government restrict it
