The Times reporting Sunak may introduce new strike legislation as soon as the end of the month.

"Conservative strategists hope that anti-strike legislation, an idea championed by Liz Truss, Sunak’s short-lived predecessor, would force a dividing line with Labour. Sir Keir Starmer has suggested that he would oppose such laws.
Ministers expect that any legislation would receive close scrutiny in the House of Lords, meaning that it would be unlikely to pass for months."
So they are plumping for a cynical exercise to grab the headlines rather than try a genuine attempt at negotiation with workers.

Lying or just a failure to engage brain?

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2023 13:27

Lying, I think. Weasel words in his first Tweet about his career but then answered 2019 when directly asked as he couldn't admit he was earning that in 2009.

Notonthestairs · 02/01/2023 13:43

Gah the quality of MPs really is piss poor in some areas.

I agree. Mine didn't answer an email to him about voter cards. I waited 3-4 weeks sent it again. No reply. Over 6 weeks had elapsed. Not even an acknowledgement.

So I contacted both CCHQ and the local Conservative office and oh my! He jumped to it then. MP's are duty bound to reply to constituents. No excuse. I am not bombarding him. Maybe 2 emails a year, but I do expect a reply when I write, so if anyone else is not getting anywhere with their MP, do complain.

itsgettingweird · 02/01/2023 14:39

Rousette. I never got a reply either. How do o contact CCHQ about that? I'd love Braverman to get told off 🤣🤣

She out a stats thing on her Fb page the other day.

It's said 18200+ emails responded too.

I was so tempted to reply - how many emails actually were received as you never respond to anyone I know 🤣

Roussette · 02/01/2023 14:48

I think the local Conservative Association in your area is the way to go. Because they assigned me a 'Case Number'. !!

And that is how he responded with a grovelling apology and quoting the case number. Good!

I didn't hear anything from CCHQ. Although I did fill this out www.conservatives.com/contact

Maybe they kicked his butt too?!

DuncinToffee · 02/01/2023 16:02

Lewis Goodall thread on childcare as Sunak plans to shelf childcare reform plans.

Childcare and childcare reform a massive open space in British politics. It isn’t just an equity and fairness issue but an economic one too. Exorbitant costs drive many parents (often women) to exit the workforce for long periods. It’s part of our productivity problem.

Childcare reform must surely be a vote winner - I can understand why they wouldn't pursue it.

Notonthestairs · 02/01/2023 17:11

I meant can't understand 😁

Fladdermus · 02/01/2023 17:20

I can never understand why people’s voting tends to become more likely to be right wing as they age.

Me neither. I've found I've got more appreciation for community and zero tolerance of selfish, tory bullshit as I've got older.

DowningStreetParty · 02/01/2023 19:39

Same here Fladdermus
I think middle age has put me more in touch with more elderly people, children and young people than at any other time in my life. Its really upsetting to see that a lot of people have basically voted to take public services away from them.

Tuesday's FT: UK recession will be deepest and longest, say economists #TomorrowsPapersToday #FinancialTimes #FT

Well the headlines sum it up - Worst recession and weakest recovery in the G7.
We failed to invest gas storage, in public services & then added Brexit to the mess.
Our GDP will shrink 1% this year - Eurozone will shrink 0.3% and 0.25% growth for the US.

tobee · 03/01/2023 00:19

Belated happy new year thread people!

DuncinToffee · 03/01/2023 11:48

WTF

EXCL: Yet another sign of the pressure in the NHS, as leaked email says from today London Ambulance Service crews will only wait 45 mins at hospitals before handing over patients.

Will mean more waiting on trolleys in corridors with hospital staff stretched even more thinly.

They want rid of the photos of ambulances queuing outside.

It means frightened patients will be left in uncomfortable circumstances (zero privacy for one thing) without immediate medical assistance on hand for hours.

At least in an ambulance there is someone watching over them.

Awful for A&E staff (including receptionists who must have nerves of steel).

Notonthestairs · 03/01/2023 12:40

Lib Dem's have called for a major incident to be declared in London (I think that might need to be extended to elsewhere too).

But they already have trollies lining the corridors and bed bays turned into seating areas to treat more people (at least they do at my local hospital). Is this just going to result in people randomly distributed through hospital corridors? They’ll run out of stretchers and chairs.

Jason118 · 03/01/2023 14:24

They’ll run out of stretchers and chairs

Plenty of floor available.

DuncinToffee · 03/01/2023 14:37

WTF again

INCREDIBLE from No10 spox. Dying after waiting 16hrs for an ambulance is "not a crisis", but a "challenge" and is "normal".

PM and Health Sec have "no plans at the moment" to "visit any hospitals or answer any questions".

Tone-deaf doesn't quite cover this. Please share! ~AA

Cornettoninja · 03/01/2023 14:44

honestly fuck these people. They should be handcuffed to the reception desk or nurses desk and forced to witness 24 hours of human suffering at their hands.

Notonthestairs · 03/01/2023 14:47

Amazing what we have to consider "normal" in 2023.

2010 category A response times.

•	The percentage of category A incidents that resulted in an emergency response arriving at the scene of the incident within 8 minutes in 2010-11 was 74.9 per cent (74.3 per cent last year - see publication for notes on comparability).
•	Of the 12 NHS organisations providing ambulance services, 7 met or exceeded the 75 per cent standard for 8 minute response times. Of the remaining 5 trusts, 4 exceeded 73 per cent with the other trust exceeding 72 per cent.

Needs declaring all over the Country, this is a national crisis. Meanwhile our Government are missing in action 🙄😡
