Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

Hay OP. There are some absolute twats commenting on your post, just ignore them. I’d be furious too and quite worried for other people. You have absolutely done the right thing. I’d have possibly felt a bit sick too at the thought that the roof could have come down on my children and me! You hear stories of people dying! It does happen. Hope you’re ok and ignore the idiots 💐

Glad you’re ok OP and you’ve totally done the right thing, it sounds so scary. I can’t actually believe some of the comments you’ve had, it takes a real special kind of shittiness to write some of the things people have said.

Well done you.
Myra should always report such incidents. The next people might not be so lucky and might be injured.

Have you heard stories of people dying from a tile falling onto them in a shop? Please send us the links to those stories as we may all learn a lot from you.

Well, this is a fascinating & dispiriting thread, isn’t it?

You absolutely did the right thing, OP. And it may have been the push that was needed to make the place safer for other customers, & for the staff, which is laudable.

i showed this last night to a family member who worked a lot in retail. She mentioned a place she worked where bits of ceiling fell down on the regular - just crumbs & corners mostly.

They reported & reported & nothing got done: some of the remarks from management made comments here very familiar to her.

Well, the place closed down & the building its in is derelict & closed off now, because it’s full of asbestos.

So she & her co-workers were breathing that stuff all the time. She worked there for best part of a year.

Abigailandthefoxes · 14/12/2022 12:02

Hiya,

I’m a facilities manager and absolutely complain to head office it should have been “made safe” if it was that bad.

The property team may not know how bad it is.

You probably find the idea of a child being killed by a piece of falling shop furniture ridiculous as well. But it happened in 2017 in a Top Shop in Reading. Can’t be arsed linking it for you, look it up yourself if you want. And cut out the stupid jokey tone about tragedies that do actually happen.

I do know about this tragedy, god bless the little boy. It wasn't a tile from a ceiling and it is a story not 'stories' so a little bit of scaremongering dramatic exaggeration going on. As for your 'cut out' demand, it won't work on me, you have no power to silence me, so save your dictatorial mannerism for those close to you who may succumb to your every wish.

Oh don’t be silly it’s not a demand, people express opinions about what other people have said, of course you can say what you like and I’m sure you will just like I will. I’m no more trying to silence you than you’re trying to silence me.

And yes, a ceiling tile isn’t exactly the same as shop furniture, but it’s pretty similar. I imagine if you were talking to the boy’s mother and scoffed at the idea of a shop ceiling killing a child she’d have something to say about it. That was my point; scoffing is off key, because at least one very similar tragedy has happened.

Dulcetto · 15/12/2022 17:31

This is not a force majeure/act of god scenario where you can be relieved no one was hurt. The only reason no one was hurt is luck and it was just a matter of time.

Serious breach of H&S wilfully putting staff and customers at risk.

I’m with you OP.

Thanks. And to you too. I probably should have just said ‘please don’t scoff’ or something a bit more polite like that in the first place.

Anyway, update for those who responded. Just had phone call from HSE who says its been sent to them and they will be inspecting the property as it sounds like a landlord issue. Sounds like things like this need to be logged as she said if the public font then they wouldn't know about it .

So I'll request thread to be shut as its all sorted. To those of you who said not to report, shame on you.

Well done OP.

Too many people walk on by these days saying "not my problem".

Someone else could have felt the impact. The shock of it would be upsetting. As someone who has trouble walking, I could have ended up on the floor if that had hit me or appeared immediately front of me.

So thank you for doing your civic duty 👏
