Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

I wouldn’t email the shop I would contact them on any social media page the store might have. Emailing them probably wont do anything, but people publicly knowing that the shop has compromised peoples safety by ignoring a leak might.

Thanks for the advice. All i want is for them to address the issue and fix the roof.

Contact health and safety or local council. Certainly should have been put in accident book. Glad you were ok.

Agreed. Don't tiddle about with their customer services dept, they will probably try and gloss over it.
This is a serious incident and needs investigation immediately

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 11/12/2022 13:08

Yes - as pps have said, needs recording by them as a near miss. You weren't hurt, thankfully, but the next shopper might not be so lucky.

Twdfn123 · 11/12/2022 13:14

Well ive taken the advice and just contacted the town council so they can make sure the issue gets fixed as its probably just a health and safety issue. I know nothing bad actually happened but I'd rather the roof gets looked in to and god forbid the next bit doesnt fall on some poor kid's head!

RebulahConundrum · 11/12/2022 13:17

I think you're underreacting tbh. Yeah nothing happened but something very easily COULD have happened. Report it to the council and their head office. It's not about getting money off them, it's ensuring they're aware of how dangerous their store is and that someone could be seriously hurt if they don't fix it properly.

Penaltyshootoutfan · 11/12/2022 13:19

Twdfn123 · 11/12/2022 13:02

Just an apology would do that they've been aware of the issue for a while and haven't done anything about it. And then maybe they would actually fix it. 🙄

Why would they personally apologise to you? Nothing happened to you. Your kid wasn’t even with you . What are you on about?

Ok not even an apology but recognising that they cant keep trading with at least marking off the area or getting it fixed. Next person or child may get not be so lucky

I think most people would be a bit startled and upset if this happened - I certainly would. An apology would be reasonable.

bippit · 11/12/2022 13:21

These comments are insane. A bit of the roof fell in. Someone could have been hurt or killed. Shops and other public places absolutely have legal standards of health and safety they must adhere to. Email the shop and also head office. Glad you’re okay.

BungleandGeorge · 11/12/2022 13:24

Why do people immediately presume you want compensation. You did
the right thing emailing because it may actually hurt someone else and surely most people would be concerned about that! And yes the customer relations should apologise and more importantly confirm That it will be made safe

ouch321 · 11/12/2022 13:24

Really depends what cane down?

If it was just those squares of foam/polystyrene it would be irritating but nothing more.

Thank you, just sat here starting to doubt myself but i don't want the next person that walks under there to be hurt so i feel justified . It's also over the baby section so the people looking there will most likely had children or babies with them :(

Peak mumsnet.

@Twdfn123 ignore the loonies on here. If a ROOF CAVED IN you’ve every right to be angry, relieved and shocked.

people on here sometimes, honestly 🙄

thank you so much, i just wanted to see what other people would do in this situation as its never happened to me before. I just want them to get it fixed so it doesnt happen again and fall on some one else, let alone a pram or child :/

Giggorata · 11/12/2022 13:28

Absolutely right, @bippit.
I’m quite surprised at the people just shrugging this off as a non issue.
I suspect that public/ commercial building maintenance issues may emerge more frequently now, as finances are tight and corners are being cut.

Not sure if you've ever seen and felt them up close but they look like light foam but are actually quite hard and you certainly wouldn't want one landing on your head!

Also the OP said:

So there is a known leak up there, causing water damage sufficient for it to get through the main ceiling and enough to saturate the ceiling tile so it collapses and falls in

An apology for what? You’re fine.

That there is a known issue causing an unstable roof which has been left knowingly over a shop where adults and children walk under.

What do you didn’t even have your son near you?

are you trying to get comp for the trauma of it or something?😳

I understood that OP is angry that they were aware of a problem but had done NOTHING to keep the area safe. As she says, they could have roped it off it it wasn't possible to get it repaired soon.

She wasn't hurt, but she or her baby might have been - so might any other customer - perhaps a very vulnerable one. It sounded from what the staff member said they had known about the problem for some time. The ceiling falling down wasn't the first sign.

I agree with her. They need to get their act together and sort it out before anyone is hurt.

elenacampana · 11/12/2022 13:36

Your son wasn’t there so all that information about him is unnecessary and the ceiling didn’t come down on you so I don’t know why you’re ‘absolutely livid’. The woman in the shop has far more right to be ‘absolutely livid’ as she was much more likely to be stood there at that time than you were as she works there so spends more time there and the leak is known about and not fixed. They haven’t looked after their employee’s safety and you think she should be falling all over herself for you? Behave.

did she even clean it up or put a notice out after

Emotionalsupportviper · 11/12/2022 13:38

I suspect that all of these people saying "You're making a fuss about nothing" would be the first ones demanding compensation if they had been involved.

Good God in Heaven some of the replies on here are unbelievable.
There again this is Mumsnet so perhaps I should say typical.
Where did OP mention the word compensation. The fact that she wasn't hurt and through fate her baby wasn't with her at the time is not the only point. Its only by the Grace of God that someone wasn't seriously hurt.
