Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

What difference will that make in your life ?
unless you are looking for a “sorry” voucher?
go ahead !

Knowing I can shop without a ceiling tile bashing me on the head would be good.

Sorry didn’t realise it actually hit you . Thought you were very near it completely unaffected just made you jump .
what is the extent of your injuries

It didn't hit me, just very near. I meant that reporting it would give me the option to shop there without the possibility of a ceiling tile falling on my head. As you asked what it would get me...

I’m sure there must be aware of it as presume they had to clear up what fell down and can obviously see it

I would like to think so too, the worker said the issue has been going on for a long time so I'm hoping a complaint from a customer will kick somebody up the butt to fix it, whether that's the landlord or whoever.

This is so stupid. "It could've hit the pram if he was with me"

He wasn't though?????!!!!!

Anyone in the entire place could say

"It could've hit me if I'd walked 3 steps forward"

Don't create an issue where it doesn't exist. You had a lucky escape, move on.

NickyT64 · 12/12/2022 20:54

of course she should write in!! Yes she has a lucky escape but I don’t think she mentioned that any sort of barrier/cordon was put up so what about the next person who gets too close? Will they be as lucky?

Chuck2015 · 12/12/2022 20:57

I don’t understand these responses, it’s not the same as a near miss with a car, nobody walks into a clothes shop and expects the roof to fall in! I’d be livid too and definitely reporting. Some odd gas lighty comments and I applaud the fact you actually want to do something about it. Yes you’re not hurt but others might be in the future but clearly some on here don’t think about that possibility!

threatmatrix · 12/12/2022 20:59

so, what are you after?

Well there is a clearly an issue of a leaky ceiling isn't there!?! No my son was in the next aisle with his dad but I was almost clonked on the head with a ceiling tile as it fell right in front of ME.

Thank you 💕 sound as if some people wouldn't report which is a bit worrying, if only for the next person or child that walks under it 😵‍💫

Then I’d contact the council about the stores health and safety. I think they have dealt with it extremely badly.

Already have done and the environmental agency as told to do so fingers crossed. I was hoping to get my sons Xmas jumper from there 🥴

Why are So many people surprised someone might be angry that OPs safety was at risk simply by being in Peacocks? It’s the responsibility of the shop and then the building management company to ensure that the building is fit for purpose and safe for anyone using it. If it ‘should have been fixed weeks ago’ then it’s been unsafe for a while. OP I would def write a letter/ with pictures included. You are absolutely right to be furious. We live not far from the bridge in Italy that collapsed a few years ago. My husband had driven over a few days before and I was absolutely in shock when it happened. As was he. He had driven over it regularly for years… and a lot in the weeks before it collapsed. Killing many people. It was just by the grace of god he wasn’t on it that day. Furious/livid…. Totally valid feelings.

pinkpantherpink · 12/12/2022 22:24

Sounds unsafe for staff and customers alike. If you're in the mood write to the stores HQ. The shopping centre management. And local council health and safety

T1Dmama · 12/12/2022 22:26

Email
to head office stating what happened and that thankfully your son wasn’t there. State that this leaky rotting roof is a law suit waiting to happen.
maybe you need to copy environmental health or someone equally as authoritative into it.

maddiemookins16mum · 12/12/2022 22:51

Could have/would have etc etc, your wain was not with you or hurt, you can’t complain about something that did not happen.

Gardengirl108 · 13/12/2022 00:15

Lampan · 11/12/2022 12:51

I suspect you’d be wasting your time. Nothing actually happened to you.
You have to ask yourself, what would you be hoping to achieve by emailing? If you don’t have a clear aim in mind, I wouldn’t bother.

This is a near miss and should be recorded in the store’s accident book. It absolutely has to be reported.

Yes I can. It almost hit me. Near misses are reportable otherwise what's the point.

But op wasn’t injured, she didn’t have an accident.
A bit of ceiling cladding -not tiles, slate or brick presumably-fell down onto the shop floor.

Op you cannot live your life in ‘it could have’ mode. It’s not healthy.

Accident books are supposed to include ‘near misses’ ime. This would be classed as one of those.

I8toys · 13/12/2022 06:56

Is this still going on? My God the drama. People have agreed with you and others havent. What more do you want? Report it. Done!

You should have posted on AIBU - would have given you more interesting responses you can get annoyed about and keep saying I don't understand some people and keep arguing the toss forever and a day!

eastegg · 13/12/2022 06:56

Wasn’t there a child killed in a shop not long ago when part of the fixtures and fittings came down? Can’t remember which shop. But it shows what can happen when problems aren’t dealt with. I don’t think complaining here is an unreasonable reaction.
