Im absolutely livid...thinking about sending a strongly worded email...

Hi,

So my partner and I were at our local peacocks browsing the clothes and we had our 1 year old son with us. I usually push the pram as i look at baby clothes but my partner took him to go to the mens. thank god! Because as i was browsing a bit of the roof fell down about 2 ft in front of me!

Now if I had been pushing my son, that would have caved in over his pram and he could have been injured! I just sort of stood there frozen and the woman at the till noticed and came over. She said did that just happen and said yes. All she said is they should have fixed it months ago as there is a massive leak up there. Then that was it and she turned around and went about her business.

I get its not her fault, but 1) to not even ask if i was okay (i am just a bit shocked and grateful at the same time my son was with his dad) 2) for the store to not even cordon that corner off if they knew it was dangerous because of the 'bad leak'.
After the lady said that I looked at the ceiling and there was lots of brown patches and drips down the wall as well.

I feel like contacting customer service as i find this all quite appaling to be honest.

Wasn’t there a child killed in a shop not long ago when part of the fixtures and fittings came down? Can’t remember which shop. But it shows what can happen when problems aren’t dealt with. I don’t think complaining here is an unreasonable reaction.

Agreed.
As I said before, shops are often held together with cable ties and fairy dust.
It takes members of the public to get things fixed by complaining too often.
If they aren't scheduled a refurb, they are often left to rot, with the manager being moaned at and threatened with disciplinary if things don't appear to be perfect.
I used to work in one wonderful store that had a downpipe in the electrical cupboard. Heavy rain meant the branch flooded via the fuse board. As far as I'm aware it's never been fixed. That was over 20 years ago and they've never had a refurb. It's a national store that is well loved by mumsnetters.
Trust me. It's likely out of their hands. Even at area manager level.
Things improved in most places but a lot is still cosmetic

Thanks for the advice. All i want is for them to address the issue and fix the roof.

So they have no intention of doing this unless you send an angry email? ??

sue20 · 13/12/2022 09:39

I was recently in a large Tesco which was partially cordoned off due to rain coming through the roof. Right at the check out end. These enormous companies don’t seem to have the money for maintaining their buildings any more?? Sacred profit margins. Lucky no one was hurt. This is why a stiff complaint needs to be made not to instruct them to mend it!!

No you're not one of the baddies at all, I totally agree with you. When people post their lives on social media and forums they should realise that not everyone will share their views and hence in this case offer sympathy. I have no sympathy at all for the attention seeking OP.

I have complained and said it needs to be fixed and a complaint filed with environmental agency. It may not do anything but I can't do much else.

Never asked for your sympathy.

You're an absolute charmer aren't you? Anyway, the facts are that a tile fell in front of you and caused no injury yet you chose to share your devastating news here. What were you looking for if it wasn't sympathy?🤔

I could say the same to you. I posted asking for opinions and I got them, some thought i should report some didnt. HSE is looking into it so what's done is done to be honest. Never said I was devastated either, or please stop putting words in my mouth 🙄

Anyway, update for those who responded. Just had phone call from HSE who says its been sent to them and they will be inspecting the property as it sounds like a landlord issue. Sounds like things like this need to be logged as she said if the public font then they wouldn't know about it .

So I'll request thread to be shut as its all sorted. To those of you who said not to report, shame on you.

Peacocks use a facilities management company to deal with their buildings issues. I'm not sure of the area you're in, but the FM company asked us to do some work recently and argued about the invoice/refused to pay.

So possibly why their roof is still leaking.

No compensation required, but wow some people are cynical.
Anyway matters done now.

Great you got a response so quickly from the HSE OP. As for the shame on you comment, well as was pointed out this is a landlord issue. And as for reporting there are trigger points and incidents for whoever is responsible to report things to the HSE, failure to do can result in hefty fines and/or prosecution if warranted, so it’s not just as simple as if the public don’t report then they won’t hear of it - 9/10 if they NEED to hear about it they will.

Well it's good to know that are things are out there in place which I'm sure 99 percent of companies do. I suppose if a landlord doesn't listen that's when HSE step in. Hopefully all OK now as they're at least aware 🙂 thanks

Wow the vipers are out today. OP YANBU. You did the right thing reporting what happened. Glad you're ok.

I'd write to head office. Never mind your baby being there, he'd hopefully have been protected by the buggy in some way, but imagine if a slightly older child had been standing there!
I should think they'd take it quite seriously
