Is it really the norm to be completely hair free for sex now?

I was married for 30 years, I kept myself tidy if I was likely to be going swimming but that's about it. DH never seemed to mind or express a preference for anything else.

I was part of a conversation with a bunch of middle aged, mostly single, admittedly quite drunk, men and women (don't ask me how the conversation came up!) and the consensus seemed to be that anything other than a completely hair free woman and a well trimmed man was "disgusting".

I've told them all Blush that if the ever get the opportunity (they won't!) they'll have to take it as it comes 😆

I really can't imagine setting myself up for that sort of maintenence, even if I wanted to, but is it really the norm?

I think hair free seems much more hygienic. And seems the norm these days

BadNomad · 10/12/2022 14:16

Is it not more that older women just can't be bothered any more?

No, we’re just unclean and have rubbish sex

OwlingAround · 10/12/2022 14:19

Nah. It’s definitely become normalised through porn and social media pics of models and celebrities wearing dental floss pants…but it’s not ‘everyone’.

I’m 40s and would never put myself through regular waxing of my bits. No thanks! I also think it looks awful. Like pre pubescent Barbie.

I’m friends with a group of 20-somethings through work and none of them go completely hairless. Teen DD wouldn’t dream of it, either.

I think pubic hair is sexy, personally.

postcardpuffin · 10/12/2022 14:20

I tried shaving a few times in my 20s but I didn’t like the look, and honestly, who can be arsed? I’m also bi so I don’t like the shaved look on female partners either. And I can confirm that it’s more than possible to give good oral sex to a woman who isn’t at all shaved or “trimmed” 😂

It isn’t more hygienic. You’re at more risk of infection, particularly from the hair follicles getting infected.

HellsBells87 · 10/12/2022 14:22

I don't grow a lot of public hair, the most I get is a bit of dark stubble. I prefer it shaved off but I don't always bother. Husband prefers it shaved, he says it's because it's more visual and he likes to look at it properly. When I was dating, the majority of men preferred a woman hair free, there was only one guy who said it was a shame I didn't have any hair as he liked it. I was really turned off by men who shaved all their pubes.

I consider myself to be an older woman being over 30. I'd say that it just wasn't the norm for us growing up. When the trend was first discussed amongst us many of my same age friends thought it was borderline indecent.

As I said in my previous post I prefer to remove all hair now. Personal choice, and no man or any relationship partner involved .

Porn innit? I think it’s grim, everyone wants to fuck women who resemble little girls. Bleuch!

I lost my hair (alopecia) and look nothing like a little girl, thanks.

What a creepy thing to say.

blossomsinwinter · 10/12/2022 14:25

But it is a bother to remove, I think!

emptythelitterbox · 10/12/2022 14:25

Can't be bothered. Too itchy, razor bumps, etc.
Never been with a man who shaved or trimmed down there.
It would freak me out.

I wouldn't mind if a guy waxed weird places hair shows up like Shoulders, nipple hair, etc.

Greenfairydust · 10/12/2022 14:25

It is yet another sign of the negative influence of porn...

It should be a woman's decision as to what she does with her public hair.

I am really bothered by the idea that a woman with hair is unclean/disgusting.

If you keep yourself clean in general there is nothing dirty about public hair per se...

I find it concerning that some women will just internalise that dodgy message (pubic hair = unclean) and take it as a fact.

I also find it disturbing that we expect women to look like pre-pubescent girls so I will trim but no longer shave.

Anyone who thinks it is disgusting or that they can dictate what I do with my body can jog on.

Except — it isn’t more hygienic! Pubic hair actually allows for the growth of healthy bacteria that protects the vulva and genitals. It actually reduces infection. This was shown decades ago and was one of the reasons why (along with women protesting, as pp mentioned upthread), about being shaved for childbirth. The shaving also causes micro-wounds that encourage more infections and pathogenic bacteria to flourish, infected hair follicles, skin abrasions etc. Studies showed that it was actually not cleaner to shave women for birth, but actually resulted in more infection and reduced healing time for wounds. That’s why they don’t do it nowadays.

There’s a reason why we have pubic hair. It isn’t “less clean”; it’s better for you.

newtb · 10/12/2022 14:12

Removing all public hair can lead to clitoral damage and reduced sensitivity. So, it's a 'no' from me.

For the PP looking for a word to describe different requirements for MEN and women. What about sexism?

Oh the inaccuracies on this thread FROM women ABOUT women's bodies. It's astounding. Especially those who only have sparse growth and don't think that the hair can grow EVERYWHERE for some.

Early 40s here. Celibate and staying single until I die. Fully hair free thanks to laser. Best thing I ever did and I have certainly lost no sensitivity from my clitoris. Why on earth would I, medically speaking?

''maddy68 · Today 14:15

I am always puzzled as to why some women just repeat this nonsense.

If you are clean in general/wash regularly, having public hair will not make you any less ''hygienic''.

It is the ''norm'' in porn, not in real life.

It's one of those things where people think their own choices are normal and that everyone does it, when in fact they haven't seen most people naked. The only thing I find disgusting is when people label other people's bodies as disgusting.

Programmes like Naked Attraction really don't help, as the person doing the choosing almost always makes the "trendy" choice, so nobody with a bush would dare go on the programme for fear of being ridiculed, so it ends up with a vicious circle of what is seen to be "normal". The same way that neat and tidy labia are seen as "normal", so anyone with more flowery ones would be scared to show it in public, which again creates an artificially skewed version of what is normal.

Have you actually ever watched Naked Attraction? There’s always women with bushes and women with ‘outies.’ None of them are scared to show their bits in public

ResearchMakesMeCry · 10/12/2022 14:31

I ain't doing it

Weightlossanne · 10/12/2022 14:35

I can remember reading in teen magazines in the 1970’s that women needed to shave their armpits for hygiene reasons. It always seemed odd to me that men’s hairy armpits weren’t unhygienic.

MsFannySqueers · 10/12/2022 14:36

This thread has reminded me of a bikini wax I had prior to a holiday. I don’t know what the therapist did but my skin looked like I had two rashers of streaky bacon stuck to the tops of my legs. I am glad I am old now. All the men I ever had sex with were grateful to be getting any. They were not concerned with how much pubic hair I had. I had a very luxuriant bush. It’s largely disappeared now.

MidnightMayhem · 10/12/2022 14:39

I read somewhere recently that pubic lice are now an endangered species, due to er … mass removal of its natural habitat. I’d never completely shave, personally, I like to be trimmed but that it.

Crikeyalmighty · 10/12/2022 14:41

I genuinely as I've got older don't get hair under arms or on legs and it's a bit sparse down below too.

mamacattiva · 10/12/2022 14:43

It’s the norm for Muslim women and men (of all ages) to shave/wax it all off. Easier to have a quick rinse and dry off after going to the loo and be sure you don’t need to wash again down there before you pray.

ChocoFudge · 10/12/2022 14:43

I'm surprised that so many people seem to know what all their friends do with their pubic hair. It's not something I've ever discussed (or wanted to discuss tbh) with my friends, I have no idea how hairy or not they are.
