You're a cat. Where are you hiding?

Next door's cat is very friendly and comes to say hi every now and then.

It's feeling like minus 4 here and earlier this evening our NDC scratched at our door to be let in. She was absolutely freezing and bolted up the stairs almost immediately. We haven't seen her since!

We've tried coaxing her out by calling her name and hunting high and low in dark spaces with a torch. I've even been tapping a tin of mushy peas in the hope she thinks it's cat food.

We haven't been out and so she can't have slipped back out. Where on earth can she be?!

Tell me your cat's unusual hiding places - I need inspiration!

Heat up some tuna in a microwave and she will magically appear.
Our cat used to hide in a paper carrier bag sitting empty in the bottom of the wardrobe

The day I moved in with DH one of my cats totally disappeared - I was convinced he had climbed up the chimney and escaped. After three hours of searching everywhere we gave up and decided to head out to the party we were going to that night. DH went to grab the box of beer that was on the kitchen worktop and a small furry head to appeared out of the handle hole - the little blighter had slotted himself through the handle hole and curled up in the space of the one bottle that had been drunk!

PEAS?! (That's what your new cat was thinking).

You need a packet to shake that sounds like dreamies. Or better yet, dreamies.

Beautifulsunflowers · 09/12/2022 22:53

On a windowsill behind the closed curtains.

maximist · 09/12/2022 22:54

Have you told your neighbour where she is? I'd hate for them to be thinking she's stuck outside in freezing temperatures.

AllotmentTime · 09/12/2022 22:54

Lentils or rice in a box and shake it. Sounds just like cat food.

Manchmal · 09/12/2022 22:54

im my experience cats are very good at finding the hidden portal to another dimension that you didn’t know you had.

they will mooch around doing unspeakable stuff in said dimension until they decide it’s time to be fed, and will re-emerge via the portal into an upstairs bedroom with a thud that sounds as if they are wearing concrete boots.

either that, or she’s at the back of the sock drawer.

pompei8309 · 09/12/2022 22:54

mine’s always at the back of the wardrobe behind all the crap , but if she’s not coming out when called, let her be, she’ll be out in the morning

Trouble is , if you shake something that sounds like Dreamies and they come tanking over and it isn't Dreamies ....... well hope you have a 50yd head start !

VickerishAllsort · 09/12/2022 22:57

Mine used to hide between the mattress and the divan base.

Yes, I've messaged them. Would hate for them to worry.

Still no sign - I'll leave it till morning now.

🤣 And yes to the concrete boots!

One of mine could twang the back of the chest of drawers back and would hide in the 3 inches between the drawer finishing and the backing, completely hidden from sight.

PaperDreamsHoney · 09/12/2022 23:01

Wherever is warmest! On top of the boiler, near a hot pipe, in a pile of washing or bedding. When I was a kid one of ours found a gap in the floorboards underneath the bath and got into the space under the floor.

Itsoktogiveup · 09/12/2022 23:02

Places my cat has hidden:

  • behind the kitchen skirting board (found a gap and squeezed in)
  • inside divan bed (crawled in the bed side drawer, went over back of drawer and into main compartment)
  • inside piano
  • on shoe rack behind boots
  • inside a hold all
  • behind a curtain on a window still (she was there for aaaaages while we ransacked the room!)
  • in car boot 🤦‍♀️
  • in shed
  • On top of curtain rail (climbed up curtain)
  • Behind wardrobe (jumped onto it then fell behind and then she didn’t know what to do so sat quietly)
  • Inside duvet cover
  • under bed inside junk pile
  • on top of fridge (got there by jumping up a series of cupboards)
  • inside under-bed drawers

Good luck!

LemonRedwood · 09/12/2022 23:03

Lost our cat earlier. He was curled up under the Christmas tree on the fluffy tree skirt.

POTC · 09/12/2022 23:06

Behind the washing machine

PauliString · 09/12/2022 23:07

Ours likes the dirty laundry basket. Extra points if it has sweaty sports wear in it.

Manchmal · 09/12/2022 23:08

@Itsoktogiveup I love your list

i think we’ve had most of those, but not the piano (as we have no piano) instead the furry little git climbed behind the kitchen cupboards and got into the back of the washing machine.

weve also managed one in the loft — perched high up on a rafter in the roofspace.

Manchmal · 09/12/2022 23:08

@POTC snap!

Under the bed or under the duvet.
