Continuation of previous thread.

Gather here all ye refugees from the foundering ship of JTT, if ye be in need of "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

Or just to chat randomly.

I wish I did too. We’ve just had a power outage and now received this text Confused

So is ours. I keep looking at it and thinking 'I should really clean that' but then don't do anything about it. Perhaps today will be the day?

I've located the spirit vinegar.

CyanCyan · 08/12/2022 10:18

Also have just discovered there’s no running water!

Kucingsparkles · 08/12/2022 10:23

Sympathies to cold and electric-less people!

The woodburner really does make a difference, we have one properly warm room to retreat to and by leaving that door open, it slightly warms up the rest of the house.

I just checked my Hive data from the hall thermostat - we'd had the heating on in the early morning (as usual) but as it's only for an hour the house temperature dropped quickly down to 14.8C. Then we lit the woodburner and it, plus some solar gain (sunny morning here) has already increased the house temperature to 15.8C. And it's much much warmer in the sitting room itself where the fire is.

spirit vinegar

SinnerBoy, I use a Magic Sponge and it does the job really easily. I thought they might just be a gimmick, but they're pretty good. I'm more of a vinegar and bicarb person for cleaning and would never have considered them myself, but Mr T came home with them.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 10:31

CyanCyan, sorry to hear of the electric/water going off where you are, that sounds like a right drag!

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 10:34

It was -5C here at 6.30 this morning and is still only -2C now, so I'm not working today. The ground will be frozen anyway. We'll have a day of sorting out the woodshed, which is a useful thing to do.

Mixing bicarb and vinegar just produces water, carbon dioxide and sodium acetate. I think water is as effective, but a lot of people seem to swear by it.

All warm here but our toilet cistern seems to have sopped filling and it is one of those stupid push button ones that means you cannot easily lift the lid off to find out what is wrong.

Looks like I will have to get a mannin.

They usually unscrew if you twist the surrounding part.

Oh I don't mix them, they are used separately. The vinegar is good for lime scale deposits and the bicarb is just a good general cleaner.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 10:43

Ah! I often soak the dishcloth in a bicarb solution.

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/12/2022 10:45

@Kucingsparkles ooh I'll take a look when I get home later. I really don't want to spend the next few days flushing my toilet with bucket, but equally don't want to pay over £100 for an issue I could fix myself.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 10:46

Same here, it works well. I also use it for cleaning our flasks out as they get quite cruddy from the tea.

SqueakyDinosaur · 08/12/2022 10:48

@Ginmonkeyagain it's quite fiddly to get enough purchase on the ring to unscrew it, but rubber gloves really help.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 14:46

The stove door is newly cleaned and just lit.

Gaah! Less than ten minutes in, the glass is blackening already!

I've just had this with my windows. Wiped all the edges down and cleaned off the mould so they were spotless, two days later and it's back already.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 15:05

And it's scruffy with ash, it looks OK to my naked eye, but the photo really show it up!

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 15:06

Nice looking wood stove, Sinner.

Are those Belemnite fossils on the hearth?

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 15:10

They're orthocones. Possibly Carboniferous.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 15:19

They're orthocones

Ah, they're lovely.

There's a Jurassic seam that runs through the land next to where I work and I've picked up some gorgeous little bivalves.

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 15:20

My wife bought them for me, for my birthday, some years back.

Tricyrtis2022 · 08/12/2022 15:32

What a lovely gift!

SinnerBoy · 08/12/2022 15:58

Yes!

duc748 · 08/12/2022 16:43

My chimney sweep was due today, and like an idiot I forget, and hadn't cleaned the stove out, and when he arrived, at noon, he wouldn't do it, cos he said it was still warm. And I booked this months ago. And he said, I can come back in March... 😟All my own fault, but it really needs doing. Hopefully he can squeeze me in with a cancellation.
