School boy won't let people sit down

Hospital2022 · 05/12/2022 17:49

Every day after school we see the same boy on the bus. He sits on a double seat and refuses to let people sit next to him he puts his leg there so no one can sit there. Several times people have wanted to sit. He won't move for anyone. Such as small children who can't balance . Elderly people. Adults have told him of on several occasions telling him to let the old lady sit down . Today he sat on the back seats. The ones where there are 5/6 seats all next to each other. He had his bag on one seat. He was sitting on the one next to it, then had his leg on the other so was taking up 3 seats . An old man asked him to move over so he can sit down . The boy refused to move several times the man asked and the boy kept refusing. The man then said im 74 years old and you won't even let me sit down you have no manners. He was a frail man. He was able to get a seat in the end. But this has been going on for a few weeks now and the boy is doing it everyday. I know what school he has to but I don't know his name or anything like that. So I can't complain to the school bas thete are over 1000 pupils in the school.

We are talking a London bus at school going home time so it's very busy.

It sounds petty when I write it but he is causing upset abd stress towards passengers.

Any suggestions ?

"It really does not work like that on London buses"

Haha, knew it wouldn't belong until london buses were more special than other lowly buses 🤣

OP do you get the impression that he is “acting tough” or that it is someone who is socially awkward or maybe with additional needs?

(Also, I can’t think what roles you would be breaking by taking a picture)

Gingefringe · 05/12/2022 18:33

Crikey - what a little shit. Just reading this made my blood boil. I hope he gets sorted soon. Dont know why the OP is posting on here though if she keeps making excuses for all of the suggestions given.

I'd dash his bag on the floor and sit down. But I'm confrontational and have no patience for gobshite teens.

Someone needs to be bold. You can try talking to the driver also, but not sure how proactive they'll be.

If bag dashing doesn't work then yeah I'd film or photograph him and contact his school. It's not illegal. It's a public place.

I highly doubt he's secretly watching porn or completely unstable. He's just being a prick.

You're asking for suggestions but are rejecting everyone's feedback, so I'm not sure what you're hoping for?

It's not so much rejecting ideas . The photo thing I was /am not sure about as not sure if its legal. Also I don't want to cause a madness kids carry knifes. With the suggestion of just move his bag in this case can't get to it . As his bag is next to the window. Then its him. With 1 leg on the floor. The other leg on the other seat next to him. The chairs infront of the back seat are also blocking the way. So can't actually get to the bag.

Tfl can obtain cctv and share it with the school. Then a police liaison can go and speak to the school/class.
it’s part of what safer travel does in the West Midlands when there’s antisocial behaviour so I’m sure it’s not beyond the scope of tfl

It's very unlikely they'll have the time or inclination to do that.

Much quicker and easier for the OP to take a photo.

I'm still baffled how this boy hasn't been thrown off the bus by other passengers by now though.

I wondered how long it would be before special needs would kick in.

Irealisenow · 05/12/2022 18:35

He may have a problem with his personal space and be unable to tolerate anyone else next to him

An extremely quick Google would solve the photo thing for you.

Take pic, tell driver, send pic to school.

Job done.

Get the whole bus on side and everyone sit on him. Every day. One on his bag, one on his leg.

But also tell the school: physical description, the exact journey, every detail you can think of. If that gets nowhere, photo.

Tough though isn't it?

He's not paying for all the seats he's preventing people from using so he has no right to block them.

I wondered how long it would be before special needs would kick in.

Surely it’s a fair question.

There is the world of difference between a 16 year old staring people down with “come on if you think you’re hard enough” attitude, and a wee 13 year old who hasn’t got a clue, doesn’t communicate well, and just really doesn’t want anyone to sit near him.

It’s all about context.

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 05/12/2022 18:38

Definitely photograph the little scrote and send it to his school.

I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable challenging a teenager who clearly doesn’t give a shit about acceptable behaviour on a London bus.

AndyWarholsPiehole · 05/12/2022 18:16

Just tell the bus driver.

The bus drivers won't do anything. They are not paid enough to deal with this.

PriamFarrl · 05/12/2022 18:22

I thought that too. I’d stand for an elderly man in a heartbeat. Shame on everyone else who was sat there.

I don't know why he came to the back of the bus. To be honest.

OP posts:
waterrat · 05/12/2022 18:39

I would tell the school bus. Time. Description. They can send a teacher to meet the bus.

antelopevalley · 05/12/2022 18:40

The elderly man went to the back of the bus because there were empty seats there. He was being considerate.

maddiemookins16mum · 05/12/2022 18:41

Reading this makes me yearn for the days where pretty much any adult would have only needed to have had a sharp word with him to make him move.
How has it got to the point where some kid, a few years out of primary school, is dictating what happens.

If he was completely unable to sit next to others, he wouldn't be getting on public transport.

Completely incorrect.

Some drivers will and some won't. They're all different people afterall.

I've seen drivers get involved over this sort of thing loads of times. The last time was when someone refused to get off the bottom step of the stairs and let someone pass.

Houseplantmad · 05/12/2022 18:43

I work in a London secondary school and deal with complaints. We welcome photos as it makes our job easier so that we can identify the child, sanction them and call their parents in.

It is not against the law to take photos of anyone in a public space.

Is there never anybody bigger and harder than him who could just put his bag on the floor and sit next to him or offer the now free seat to the person who needs it? Is it fear of knife crime?

Honestly he wouldn’t get away with this on a bus down Hessle Road in Hull, some hard woman or man would unleash a right gobfull and sling his bag on the floor to the glee of everyone else.

I know violence isn’t the answer and I really don’t advocate it but I do get why some older people hark back to the times when some older man or men in their twenties would just have grabbed him by the collar and yanked him up and out of his seat and told him to learn some respect.

God! I sound like a right old bat! 😂

You’re right there. He wouldn’t get away with it on Road.

If he was completely unable to sit next to others, he wouldn't be getting on public transport.

He can do what the rest of us do who aren’t comfortable sitting next to others. Stay standing. Walk whenever possible. Travel at less busy times. Take circuitous routes to avoid the crowds.
