Release, I saw you were previously having problems posting. Now that this thread is 800+ posts, it is constantly crashing, freezing and there is a delay in typing. I lost so many posts that way, not that I have much to add, but just want to thank posters who previously replied to me. Still reading if other people can still post.

Just seen this.

Could it possibly be your computer?

I did have significant problems a couple days ago but it seems to be better now. You -do- have to Refresh before trying to write anything, or it gets lost. If you Refresh, usually it works. The problems the other day were not common, though the functionality of the site still has its problems specially with PMs

Day 318, January 7, 2023. Summary of Arestovych and Feygin broadcast
Posted on 08 January 2023

πŸ”₯ Battlefield update
Jan 7 is Orthodox Christmas; Putin’s ceasefire lasted about 30 minutes. A family was killed in Kherson as a result of shelling. Several people are wounded.

πŸ”₯ Soledar-Bakhmut
Heavy fighting in the area. Soledar is in a semi-encirclement by the enemy. The situation is difficult but controlled by UA. Rumors of Soledar being taken by RU are fake. The enemy tries to cut Soledar off from Bakhmut in the south and Slovyansk in the north.
The enemy is advancing with heavy losses. Arestovych refers to the recent photo of a field near Bakhmut covered with scattered bodies of RU troops. RU has lost an estimated 80,000 killed and wounded by trying to take these two cities.
Wagner group is not unlike ISIS but coming out of Orthodoxy, not Islam: same code, principles, and logic; same dehumanization and suicidal attacks, and Wagner will end the same way as ISIS.

πŸ”₯ Kreminna-Svatove
RU hopes to advance toward Lyman/Yampil but will not succeed.

πŸ”₯ Zaporizhye
RU stands in the defense. UA hit a concentration of troops and military equipment and a commanding post in Tokmak.

πŸ”₯ Other directions
Kherson: exchange of artillery fire. Kharkiv, Dnipro – regular shelling by RU.

πŸ”₯ Belarus
Regarding the recent transfer of Russian units to Belarus: there are no signs of preparation for invasion. Instead, ammunition is transferred from Belarus to Donetsk. Troops are stationed at training camps in Belarus before they, too, are transferred to Donetsk.

πŸ”₯ Next Counter-Offensive
Recent deliveries include a lot of armored vehicles. This could be a sign of UA’s counteroffensive but not imminently. UA needs time to accumulate resources; some promised deliveries will take time; due to mobilization, RU has managed to accumulate its resources faster and will likely attack first. Thus, UA will have to stop RU’s offensive, then begin its counter-offensive.
UA Gen Staff believes RU will attack in Luhansk/Donetsk regions and possibly include Kharkiv and Zaporizhye regions as the flanks. This is widely discussed with Western partners.
UA cannot accumulate enough resources for a counteroffensive because of 1) slow weapon deliveries and 2) resources required for Bakhmut/Soledar defense.

πŸ”₯ Mobilization
RU mobilized 200,000 troops and is training them for its second offensive. The next wave of mobilization will be needed to replace these 200,000 troops. They will be trained and transferred to the front in May-July 2023 for the third offensive. Unlike the first wave, these mobilized will have more time for training.

πŸ”₯ Orthodox Christmas services
Putin and the priest are seen alone during the Christmas eve service video. No other worshippers are present. Meanwhile, in Kyiv, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) leads a historic service in Pechersk Lavra, previously the place of worship for the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC). UOC was prohibited from worshiping there for 300 years.
Official ROC has long been a government branch in RU, offering ideological support since Stalin’s regime. Moscow Patriarchate churches in UA have been loyal to Moscow with its imperial ideology and saw no future without Russia.
There are several official branches of Christianity in Ukraine: Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant. The transition of Ukrainian orthodox priests and worshippers from Moscow Patriarchate churches to Ukrainian churches must be done carefully, without extremes in either direction, so as not to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

πŸ”₯ Sanctions
Ukraine imposed sanctions against 119 Russian and Ukrainian pop figures who propagate Kremlin ideology: the list will be recommended to Western sanctions authorities.

πŸ”₯ Weapons
An American senator visiting Kyiv was amazed at the quality of accounting for the delivered US weapons. France is the first to announce deliveries of heavily armored vehicles.
The collective West changed its attitude towards the war, allocating a record package of military assistance to Ukraine of 3 billion USD. The publicized items from the new package are Paladin howitzers, Sea Sparrow missiles for modified Ukrainian air defense systems, Bradleys, armored personnel carriers, anti-tank missiles, ammunition, etc.
The nomenclature reflects two main objectives for UA: to stop the RU offensive and to begin the counteroffensive. This is the first time in 11 months that Ukraine’s needs are synchronized with Western deliveries. Western countries compete for military contracts; France and Germany are sometimes ahead of the United States in the supply of heavy weapons.
Many NATO countries are increasing ammunition production while RU is experiencing an ammunition shortage. Earlier in the war, they used 45,000-60,000 shells per day.
The West will continue to supply weapons to Ukraine increasingly. Even if Russia mobilizes five mln people, they will not be able to stand against modern western weapons.
From mid-April to June 2023, Ukraine will accumulate resources, while RU’s ammo deficit will be the worst. This will be the time for UA’s counteroffensive that will outshine the Kharkiv operation.
Next Ramstein meeting is on Jan 20. The results will show what to expect for the rest of winter and spring, even the beginning of summer.

The next stream is on Tuesday, January 10.

mids2019 · 09/01/2023 00:09

So what is 2023 going to look like?

Is this going to be a war of attrition that lasts years and how is each side going to keep up armaments?

Is Ukraine preparing for a counteroffensive it hopes is decisive? Do we have to wait for a build up of arms so there is a critical mass of weaponry that will allow swift advance?

Is there going to be the equivalent of D day next year with a long thought out and well prepared assault on Russian lines which will lead to an unstoppable.eventual retreat or defeat?

Alternatively is there going to be pressure for a negotiated settlement and in which case what role will the West (US in particular) play in the negotiations?

Very very hard to do and very very risky to do, a few reasons.

If the border in question is for example the Polish/Ukrainian one then there are a large number of potential crossing points...which one to hit?

The distances of those border points from Russian held territory are such that the Russians don't have much ordnance that would reach that far with any accuracy (they do have some, but that's becoming reduced in number).

If the Russian ordnance goes amiss and ends up on the wrong side of e.g. the Polish/Ukrainian Border that's a direct act of aggression on a NATO member...

Even if Russia were prepared to risk all that to be of significant value they would have to hit the crossing point at the moment a shipment was coming through.

Like many things in war etc it's not that easy.

Yep.

I'm hoping the deletion was down to something specific to that poster.

If it was deleted simply because of the nature of the question asked then the whole thread and any other threads on this entire subject is screwed.

Anybody with any insight into some of the military and/or technical stuff might as well not bother contributing from here on in.

I'd certainly appreciate some clarity on this from MNHQ.....

A bit of commentary from me first. McCarthy does not control the budget. The house and the senate have to agree on the bills. What he agreed to was a cap on overall spending, not specifically spending on Ukraine. There is already a push back from moderate republicans because the most likely place this would be felt is the overall defense budget. There was an editorial in the WSJ about this I may post later. Remember the lend lease bill last year? It hasn't been used yet but would allow the president to continue to supply military aid with no further congressional authorization.

It's going to get ugly, but budget bills are usually passed with a bipartisan compromise. I don't think McCarthy can just impose his will on the process.

Kevin McCarthy 'agreed to cut aid to Ukraine' to secure US speaker role - Republican, who had to go through 15 rounds of voting to be elected, had to compromise with opponents sceptical of sending money to Kyiv

Kevin McCarthy reportedly agreed to spending caps that would limit future aid to Ukraine as part of the deal with ultraconservatives that enabled him to finally be elected as House speaker on Saturday.

Mr McCarthy, a Republican, secured the position in the early hours, following a historic five-day 15-vote fight that brought Washington to a standstill.
His Right-wing opponents from the chamber's Freedom Caucus, dubbed the β€œTaliban 20”, wielded their opposition to US aid for Kyiv as part of their justification for voting against him in the first 14 votes.

Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida, one of the most hardline aid sceptics, led the charge against Mr McCarthy’s candidacy for speaker before eventually yielding after an extraordinary confrontation in the chamber.

In scenes shown on live television, Mr McCarthy walked over to Mr Gaetz after the failed 13th vote to beg him to change his mind. Rebuffed, he walked away only for a scuffle to break out behind him as another Republican Congressman, Mike Rogers, lunged at Mr Gaetz.

As he accepted the gavel in the early hours of Saturday, Mr McCarthy, who was backed by former president Donald Trump, outlined the Republicans' aggressive lines of attack ahead of the 2024 presidential race.

He vowed to "pass bills to fix the nation's challenges, from the wide open southern border to 'America last' energy policies, to woke indoctrination in our schools."

The election bid by Mr McCarthy, 57, who has served as Minority House Leader since 2019, marked the first time in a century that voting for a speaker has gone beyond one round.

Finally able to take the oath of office, Mr McCarthy swore in newly elected lawmakers who had been waiting all week for the chamber to formally open and the 2023-24 session to begin.

But his protracted fight foreshadowed how difficult it would be for him to govern with an exceedingly narrow majority and an unruly hard-Right faction bent on slashing spending and disrupting business in Washington.

According to reports, to end the impasse, Mr McCarthy agreed a deal that the House would commit to passing bills that would cap all discretionary defence spending at 2022 financial year levels, meaning roughly $1.47 trillion. Congress has passed four emergency supplementals totalling more than $100 billion since Russia’s invasion in February.

President Joe Biden will require Congress to approve any additional military aid later this year. Should one of the rebel lawmakers - who have vowed to oppose any further aid packages - be given leadership roles in the House Rules Committee it could create immense hurdles to passing additional assistance legislation.

The most recent $45 billion package agreed by Congress will not be affected by the new House leadership.

β€œHaemorrhaging billions in taxpayer dollars for Ukraine while our country is in crisis is the definition of America last,” Mr Gaetz said last month as to why he had stood against Mr McCarthy.

Matt Rosendale of Montana, another holdout, recently voted against US support for Ukraine, citing what he said were more pressing security needs along the southern border with Mexico.

β€œThis is a harbinger for a protracted legislative paralysis,” one diplomat warned, telling CNN that β€œthe Freedom Caucus – which is not particularly pro-Ukrainian – has just demonstrated its clout.”

Another expressed concern about β€œthe policy concessions McCarthy has to make, and if they are going to affect the US role in the world.”
Mr McCarthy shrugged off suggestions that the concessions could weaken his power.

"That gives me no problem or concern whatsoever," he told reporters, describing his deal with critics as a "very good" agreement that "empowers the members".
