Happy New Year when it comes folks. I usually feel so hopeful at this time of year but tonight just feel deflated. Praying that 2023 brings some justice for the people of Ukraine.

This is how I feel too. But I am hopeful that 2023 will bring peace to Ukraine. Thank you all, I feel like this thread is one massive continuous hand hold through most part of 2022 for me personally.

notimagain · 31/12/2022 23:56

Finally got through local New Year..πŸ€”....shortly be celebrating the UK one ( family there).

Happy New Year belatedly/in anticipation (delete as applicable) to everybody here...hoping for this conflict to be resolved totally in Ukraine's favour and on Ukraine's terms ASAP in 2023.

TheABC · 31/12/2022 23:59

Happy New Year, everyone and thank you for posting on here. It's been a fantastic read even as I wish it were not necessary.

In one respect, we are ending 2022 on a better note than expected. Despite everything Russia has thrown at Ukraine, it's here, it has survived and it has a future where it will thrive.

PerkingFaintly · 31/12/2022 23:59

Wishing peace, justice and safety to Ukraine and Ukrainians in 2023.

And everything good to all the lovely folks here.

Autumnnewname · 01/01/2023 01:25

Happy new year to everyone and especially to Ukrainians

Hopefully by this time next year we will all be relishing your victory

MissConductUS · 01/01/2023 01:26

Happy New Year from New York, where 2022 still has a few hours to go.

What Ukraine has done militarily is amazing. May the new year bring victory and peace to that brave nation.

I have learned a great deal from you all, so thanks for that, and hope my contributions have been useful as well.

L1ttledrummergirl · 01/01/2023 01:33

Belated happy new year from the UK. May the New Year bring peace in the world.

Mb76 · 01/01/2023 08:55

Happy New Year!

Has anyone in the UK stay up to watch the London Eye fireworks on tv? We always do and this time I was really moved by a tribute to Ukraine and it’s people, as well as the late Queen Elizabeth.

ISW Key Takeaways
www.understandingwar.org/backgrounder/russian-offensive-campaign-assessment-december-31

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annual New Year’s Eve address continued to illustrate that Putin is uncertain of his ability to shape the Russian information space and remains focused on justifying the war in Ukraine and its cost to his domestic audience.

Putin delivered his address from the headquarters of the Southern Military District (SMD) as part of his ongoing efforts to portray himself as an effective wartime leader.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu demonized Ukraine and announced that Russian victory is inevitable in his New Year’s Eve speech.

Russian forces are likely depleting their stocks of artillery ammunition and will struggle to support their current pace of operations in Ukraine as a result.

Russian forces launched another round of missile strikes targeting Ukrainian critical infrastructure but at a reduced intensity compared to previously massive waves of strikes.

Ukrainian and Russian sources stated that Ukraine and Russia exchanged prisoners but differed in their reporting on the number of exchanged personnel.

Russian forces continued limited counterattacks to regain lost positions along the Svatove-Kreminna line on December 31.

Russian forces continued offensive operations around Bakhmut and Avdiivka-Donetsk City on December 31.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced that the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) lost connection to its last functioning backup power line on the evening of December 29.

Russian forces continue operations in eastern Zaporizhia Oblast and along the southern axis.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov stated on December 31 that he knew β€œfor a fact” that the Kremlin plans to close its borders for men, declare martial law, and begin another wave of mobilization in β€œone week or so.”

Russian occupation authorities continue to intensify law enforcement crackdowns in occupied territories in response to Ukrainian partisan activities.

Russian occupation officials continue to create unbearable living conditions for residents of occupied territories.

Russian forces are likely depleting their stocks of artillery ammunition and will struggle to support their current pace of operations in certain sectors of the frontline in Ukraine as a result. Ukrainian Main Military Intelligence Directorate (GUR) Chief Kyrylo Budanov reported on December 31 that Russian forces in Ukraine are experiencing significant issues with artillery ammunition that will become more pronounced by March of 2023.[8] Budanov stated that Russian forces had previously used 60,000 artillery shells per day (as of some unspecified date) and now only use 19,000 to 20,000 shells.[9] Budanov stated that Russian forces have also removed all remaining artillery ammunition from Belarusian military warehouses to support their operations in Ukraine.

In Germany, the production of wheeled self-propelled guns RCH-155 for Ukraine has begun, β€” said Nicholas Drummond, adviser to the KMW manufacturing company
RCH-155 is a development of Kraus-Maffei Wegmann. Like the Panzerhaubitze 2000, the gun mount has a high level of automation of all systems, and the machine's turret is uninhabited.
Drummond did not say when the Armed Forces will be able to get new self-propelled guns into service.[ It does indicate however that Germany does believe that Ukraine will win]

We believe next year will be a year of victory, and we will celebrate it together.

Excerpts from Zelenskyy's addresses:

Wish for miracles today? Ukrainians have been creating them themselves for a long time.

Want real friends? We have already found out for sure who they are.

Want true love? This year we felt it more than ever.

Want faith and hope? Both have been in the Armed Forces for a long time.

Do you want home comfort? It's where we and our loved ones are.

Want light? It is in each of us, even when there is no electricity.

Want adventure and travel? Now Ukrainians have received too many of them.

So today it is only one wish.

And it will come true not by a miracle, but by our work. By struggle. By mutual aid. By humanity.

Happy New Year! The year of our victory.

2022 struck our hearts. We cried out all the tears. All the prayers were yelled. 311 days. We have something to say about every minute. But most words are superfluous. No explanation needed. Silence is needed to hear. Pauses are needed to realize

We don't know for sure what new 2023 will bring us. I want to wish all of us one thing – victory. And that's the main thing.

Let this year be the year of return. The return of our people. Soldiers – to their families. Prisoners – to their homes. Immigrants – to their Ukraine. The return of our lands. And the temporarily occupied will become forever free.

Return to normal life. To happy moments without curfew. To earthly joys without air alerts. The return of what has been stolen from us. The childhood of our children, the peaceful old age of our parents.

May the New Year bring all it. We're ready to fight for it. That's why each of us is here. I'm here. We're here. You're here. Everyone's here. We're all Ukraine.

Yup, but he wasn't taking any chances on having real military behind him:

How scared of the Russian people is Putin? This amount. Flanked by supposed Russian soldiers who've received awards for fighting in #Ukraine - he gave his #NewYear speech. But at least 1, if not majority, are part of his security detail. Maybe little Putin doesn't trust women?

Almost every report since the summer has told us that Russia is about to run out of artillery stocks.

Here's hoping it finally becomes true with this new year but I'm not holding my breath.

I can't help thinking that something reported so often erroneously casts doubt on other content

Fair comment.

Nobody publishing in "the open" will have or even have sight of the genuine situation (ammunition, collapse of the Russian army, you name it).

Some of what we read is a wild guess, some read is an educated guess. Also sadly some individual analysts have over the months seemed to have been willing to sacrifice quality of output for quantity, perhaps in search of hits.

prettybird · 01/01/2023 15:02

"Running short" of ammunition is not necessarily the same as "running out". There may be/almost definitely is replenishment going on, although potentially hopefully at a slower rate, which means that they won't actually run out Sad

Correct. There's a great deal of guesswork going on here. No one knows how much artillery ammunition Russia started the war with, or what their current production rates are.

We do know that Russia is firing 40 year old rounds, Ru troops are roundly complaining about the lack of ammo online, and in many areas, the rate of fire has dropped off fairly dramatically. What may be less commonly understood is the problem this presents for the Russians. Their ground war doctrine is heavily artillery centric. Their training centers on shelling targets and then standing on the rubble. This suits their heavily centralized command structure. Orders are simple, and troops do not need to think. Take away the massive artillery advantage, and they have little to fall back on. Their troops that are capable of maneuver warfare, like the VDV (airborne units) were rendered mainly combat ineffective in the initial invasion. Oops.

Strategically, the management of war stocks is complicated. In the US, a law stipulates that we always have to have enough ammunition and supplies to fight a land war in Europe. That's being reevaluated now in light of the reduced threat from Russia. The Russians can't completely empty the locker in case they are attacked elsewhere. They aren't greatly concerned about it, though, as they've pulled troops and air defense units out of western Russia and sent them to Ukraine. Leaving that front with minimal defenses shows how badly they need the assets in Ukraine.

@blueshoes his speech is seriously tear-heavy. He was an actor but he's become so much more. He knows how to deliver lines, but the passion leaks through.

HIs careworn and grieving face is just ... I don't have words.

@MissConductUS Ukraine seems convinced that there will be a 2nd mobilization soon. If they run out of ammunition and can't persuade China, Iran or N Korea to give more, given their doctrine all that will remain is waves upon waves of men.

MissConductUS · 01/01/2023 17:33

@ReleaseTheDucksOfWar Ukraine seems convinced that there will be a 2nd mobilization soon. If they run out of ammunition and can't persuade China, Iran or N Korea to give more, given their doctrine all that will remain is waves upon waves of men.

This would play to Ukraine's advantage. When this happened with the current batch of mobiks, they were usually ineffective. When Ukrainian troops were in danger of being overrun, they retreated in good order behind a wall of artillery fire and then shelled the new Russian positions with HIMARS. Russia has lost so many officers that they can't do anything complex or provide adequate supervision of large numbers of new conscripts.

Russia will have to close its borders to prevent more men from fleeing if they mobilize again. That's a very dangerous game politically for Putin.
