Starting a ‘wee only’ rule in the en-suite rule?

Notsympatheticenough · 29/11/2022 06:47

new house. En-suite isn’t as soundproof as old en-suite. Dh’s ablutions in the morning are…loud. Is it unreasonable I ask him to use the family bathroom?

he says the loo is more comfortable in The en suite. He has no embarrassment factor.

maybe I could offer to stop doing something that annoys him?

Can't believe people have rules about this sort of thing... What if you go to a "pee only" toilet and then before you know it a little more has come out besides a pee??? Too late to hoick up and move stations...

nomoneytreehere · 29/11/2022 09:17

We have put the toilet in our ensuite in its own little room (with a window). Its off the room with the shower and vanity. Builders thought we were crackers.

hotdiggetydog · 29/11/2022 09:19

It's a toilet FFS. In a separate room.

helpfulperson · 29/11/2022 09:21

Surely one half of a partnership can't just make rules and expect the other person to follow them?

.....pondering what rules I should have in my house.

This again. We all know how weird MN is about en-suite bathrooms. If I'm in bed and need to poo I use my en-suite bathroom if I'm downstairs unused the downstairs loo which is off the laundry room. I don't consider that piping there will contaminate my laundry.

I've thrown up a few times in our ensuite. I'm sure it didn't smell or sound pretty but I probably wouldn't have made it to the main bathroom and then puked on the carpet. What about when I'm on my period, should that be allowed or should I be banished to another toilet because I'm dealing with more than a wee?
It's a toilet. They are designed for bodily functions. There is a wall and a door so it's really not the same as pooping in the bedroom.

Open plan ensuites ie no wall or door, I agree are a complete abomination and I can't imagine why anyone thinks those are a good idea!!

SantaOnFanta · 29/11/2022 09:27

This thread cannot be real, people surely don't have rules about this?

astronewt · 29/11/2022 09:28

It's a toilet. Everybody shits. Get over it.

Phos · 29/11/2022 09:34

Really, people actually do this? It's just an extra bathroom, its nothing like pooing in your bedroom. Unless you don't have a wall between your ensuite and bedroom, how is it any different from the bathroom being next door?

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 29/11/2022 09:41

According to WHO, 3.6 billion people, nearly half the world’s population, do not have access to safely managed sanitation in their home.
Yet on MN the urgent priority is not to let your partner crap in your ensuite because he/she doesn't shit roses and may (shudder) make a sound.
Some perspective might be useful here.

softpilllow · 29/11/2022 09:41

En-suites have doors. You don't accuse your family of shitting on the landing, do you?

This. Why are people saying you don't shit in your bedroom?

Obviously you don't, you shit in the toilet. Which may happen to be in the en suite, but nobody is shitting in the bedroom.

BMW6 · 29/11/2022 09:41

How peculiar some people are!

Surely if you have a family bathroom you are as likely to be able to hear someone having a shit as you would if they use an en suite with the door closed? Most bathrooms share a wall with at least one bedroom!

Hadjab · 29/11/2022 09:43

Fufumcgoo · 29/11/2022 07:01

It's really not weird to not want somebody shitting in your bedroom. I wouldn't have an ensuite full stop but if I had too. Peeing only.

I cannot think of anything less pleasant. the sounds, the smells 🤮

But they aren't shitting in your bedroom, are they?

What is the point of an ensuite if you can't use it for perfectly normal bodily functions?

nex18 · 29/11/2022 09:46

No en-suite here but dd’s bedroom is next to the bathroom and she hears bathroom happenings. It’s the loo roll rolling that’s really loud though and the singing in the shower is what generates the most complaints (or laughs depending on mood).

Phos · 29/11/2022 10:01

Surely pooing in your ensuite is preferable. If you have an unexpected guest then you don't have to worry someone left skid marks in the toilet they would use.

Tubbyinthehottub · 29/11/2022 10:10

I poo in my ensuite but my husband has to poo in another bathroom. His poos are much more smelly and I can't be doing with the stench if I'm going to have a shower etc. He says it's because he drinks coffee Confused

stuntbubbles · 29/11/2022 13:00

The Venn diagram of posters who say “toilet”, posters who are outraged at anyone considering it “shitting in the bedroom”, and posters who think it’s OK to poo in an en suite, is a circle.

Not sure what conclusion to draw there, I’m just presenting the data.

PS. It is absolutely shitting in a bedroom.

PPS. I’ve also decided en suites are non-U, just to further set the cat among the pigeons.

stuntbubbles · 29/11/2022 08:28

It’s a normal bodily function that has no place in the bedroom. It’s not dictatorial to want to sleep!

It's a toilet ,that's what they are there for 🙄
some of you have no idea how privileged you sound ,we have one bathroom and one toilet .

We are thinking of buying a house with an ensuite in the bedroom but it also has a walk in wardrobe so that makes up for it.

Don't poo in the wardrobe. That would be worse.

Luxury.

We have one bathroom and the one toilet is inside it.

Yeah that's what I meant our one toilet is in our one bathroom!

Loving this thread! Anyway, our last house had an en-suite; it was an oldish house. There was a shower only boxroom in the hallway and the en-suite had a toilet, washbasin and bath. However, the toilet was one of those electric macerator ones. So yes, it was wee only.

My late nacissistic mother-in-law visited us once there for Christmas. she insisted on taking the master bedroom. We told her that it was wee only, because of how the toilet worked, but she still had a massive shit in the thing. The inevitable happened. It overflowed all over the floor and me and DH had to clean it up. She didn't even apologise.

Oh, and BTW, this was on a Christmas Morning.

Jingle fucking bells

Cupcakegirl13 · 29/11/2022 06:54

I lie in bed every morning listening to DH emptying his bowels and I can’t stand it. Interested to hear others thoughts on this as wasn’t sure if I was being unreasonable !

This was me until I moved permanently into the spare room as he would not change his habits.

Yeah this really isn't weird. It's too close to the bed for shits.

Pee only, I've never had an ensuite but I can guarantee you if I did, it would be a rule.
