What was your local, shit club that you frequented in your youth?

Nc for this one 😁

Mine was Langtrys in Beckenham. Absolute shit hole. We used to get in from 15 years old as the bouncers just asked for our date of birth and star sign! Would sneak bottles of wine in hidden in the lining of coats. Loads of weird, pervy men. Constant fights. I shudder to think of dd in that environment but 13yo me thought it was amazing.

Xanadu and The Brad.

There was an even shitter one which could barely be called a club in the very small town I went to school in. Basically like a youth club, but £1 drinks and the owner used to say he’s rather we were all in there than drinking on the streets. It’s got a Wilko’s built on it now.

Ziggy's, Basingstoke. I think there was a snooker hall downstairs? We'd go for the indie night but one week they switched the nights around and we ended up at a cheesy dance night by mistake. It was absolutely dire but we loved it.

Another cheesy nightclub near us, Martine's in Eastleigh, used to send out a pair of free tickets when you turned 18 (got your names off the electoral roll I suppose). I never went, it was all handbag house and chart dance, not my cup of tea at all.

Cinatras in Croydon. £20 all you could drink

Back in the 90s I was living in a shared house that was right opposite the fire escape at the back of Cinatras, the bouncers would throw out the people that were fighting (ie most of them insideGrin) so that provided regular entertainment for us.
We lost count of the times you’d hear “Kev, Kev, leave it…no, eee’s not werf it!” at 145am.

The tower block above also appeared in the credits of Peep show i believe. Fine piece of Croydon architecture:

That’s brilliant! I remember Cinatras well! Those were the days!

RG1's in Reading. It was known as 'Shites' so you can guess what a quality venue it was! Now flats I think.

And also Utopia (U- grope- ia 🤢) now an Ikea, so still occasionally visit 🤣🤣

Ha yes. It was previously called Washington Heights aka Shites. The makeover to RG1 happened in my 2nd year of Uni and made no difference! The name stuck.
Also there was the After Dark, Purple Turtle and Utopia on the off ramp of the next junction of the M4 (Calcot?). They had to ship people in on old Routemaster and offer free 'champagne' (pomagne) to entice people there

SanFranBear · 28/11/2022 08:17

Shades was in my small hometown and was utterly shocking but we used to head out, completely underage, up the trainline to Milton Keynes to Flamingos... awful music but known for letting you in, whatever your age...

The train back was always soooo late so I'd be getting in at 3 or 4 and then dragging myself up for school... God knows what my parents were thinking!

Harrysutton · 28/11/2022 08:19

Panama Joes, and then Lava and Ignite. Both shit holes but I met my husband in Lava and Ignite so not all bad

Harrysutton · 28/11/2022 08:23

@mackthepony i was in Smacks this weekend after a Christmas do. The shit bar that will never ever shut. They had karaoke on the bottom floor on Saturday which was an experience!

ADialgaAteMyDog · 28/11/2022 08:24

Warehouse, Boxes and Boogies, three joined clubs on the quayside in Exeter. We used to go to the "Margaret Thatcher Experience" 80s night in a Wednesday and on student night Thursday you'd get in for £1. Such good memories! Then it turned I to a pole dancing club...don't know what it is now.

BordoisAgain · 28/11/2022 08:27

All the usual places any respectable essex girl would go in the 90s

Tots, Raquels, Dukes, Sams

Hooverphobe · 28/11/2022 08:31

I see your Langtry’s and raise you the Marlowe Rooms! 😂

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 28/11/2022 08:35

Kelly's (which was actually great). Traks, which was a shitty pickup joint full of creepy men, I saw the Hitman and Her there. Neros which was also crap. And worst of all the disco in the basement of the Strand hotel, which was full of horrifically old people in their twenties!!

Then when I was a student it was either the Crescent or the Student's Union.

Thankfully I got to go to some bloody brilliant clubs when I moved to London in the 90s!

lugeforlife · 28/11/2022 08:39

Ahhh Charlie Chans. A night of class.

Back when I was 15 we started to go to Cinderella rockafellas in Gloucester. Next to the leisure centre.

We had to get lifts there from parents - Mandy's dad seemed to not mind at all which given what an utter meat market and how young and 3 years underage we were, seems baffling now.

Sallycinnamum · 28/11/2022 08:47

Not sure it would be classed as a shit club but spent every Saturday night at the Pink Toothbrush in Rayleigh from 16 until I was early twenties.

Have many happy memories of the early 90s in the 'Brush.

Wonder if my name is still scrawled on the toilet door?!!

I must be a tad older as it was still the Washington Shites when I went.

Only got bussed to Utopia once - usually it was Bensons in Remenham.

Still miss the dropping walls and lollypop on the way out of the After Dark.

Cheekee Pete's in Richmond.
The Oldfield in Sudbury.
Lemons in Acton.
Heaven in Charing Cross.
And many more...

Oh yes Cheekee Pete’s
My sister put her handbag on the floor (why?) when she went to the loo and a hand under the door grabbed it - DM had to get the front door locks changed

Nemesis, Rochdale. They put on a bus to from Town as it was a slight drive away at a “retail park”, sticky floors and plenty of VK Blue, good times.

I went to some belting under 18s nights there!! 😁

FerretInAFrock · 28/11/2022 09:04

Anyone remember Oceans in Bracknell?

Entrance inside a multi-storey carpark - you (or rather your lift) never parked near the entrance to save your wing mirrors being broken as there were always fights in the car park.

Do you remember the test tube shots?! And the carpet was black with multicoloured lightning shapes! Loved it ha ha! It's called Bridge Bar now and one of the bouncers has honestly been there since 1998!!!

Butch is still there?! 😲🤣

Ahh, Blue Orchid in Croydon. Got beaten up walking back through Croydon after a night in there.

The Hippo in Nottingham. Preferred The Garage though which was an icon rather than a shit club. However Spiders in Hull was definitely not an icon.

bitchrestingface2 · 28/11/2022 09:36

Peppermint Park, Ritzy's, Hi's and Rick's Place - they were all different levels of awful.
