I can't decide on floor tiles for my kitchen, doors will be white shaker and I've decided on the work tops but am stuck on the flooring.
So would you have wood effect or the mottled one ?

It's a bit dark, but this was mine with wood effect flooring when it had just been fitted. I love it and would go with wood again.

If you haven't bought the kitchen yet rethink the shaker doors. Look nice, but those little ledges drive me nuts now. Sticky kitchen steam, dust, and the joints make then a nightmare to keep clean, especially white ones.

Can't wait until my next kitchen (probably won't be able to convince dh it's due to be replaced for another 10 years), it won't be shaker style!

This is the advice I would give! That bottom ‘ledge’ - it never gets really clean and tiny bits just collect in there 😭

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 27/11/2022 00:42

Sorry - I’ve just continued reading and seen you’ve ordered already.

it will be lovely and I’m sure you’re a much better housekeeper than me 😂 and you’ll love it and it’ll be beautiful!

I've got the exact same dark grey tiles in my kitchen, I'd love to rip them up and replace with something lighter.

Godsavetheking2022 · 27/11/2022 07:12

Do you have underfloor heating? I replaced my tiles that didn't have underfloor because they were sooo cold. We now have insulation and wood. So much warmer.

Newwardrobe · 27/11/2022 07:24

Thank you all so much for the advice, I'm beginning to wish I hadn't chosen white doors now but I thought they wouldn't go out of fashion.
The flooring is easier to choose than the work tops , I just can't decide and I need to hurry up as it needs to be ordered soon.

Depends how big the kitchen is.

If it's a smaller kitchen agree keep the colours light.
But I would choose like for like.

Wooden flooring to go with wooden unit top.
Or mottled flooring with mottled unit top.

It doesn't have to contrast there will be enough stuff going on when the stuff is back in your kitchen.

What tiles you going for ?
Plain white horizontal brick type ?

I'm not having wall tiles, just the upstands and paint , which leads me to another headache of choosing colour for the walls !

Newwardrobe · 27/11/2022 07:44

And I'm very aware that this really is a first world problem and I'm lucky to be having a new kitchen.

I think white and cream units are clasic, but I probably would go with a bamboo colour worktop just to give the kitchen some warmth.

Roselilly36 · 27/11/2022 07:54

I would have the wood effect worktop and the mottled floor, the mottled flooring looks like it won’t show every mark. I had to laugh when a previous poster said they liked your grey tiles, I have just got rid of those in my kitchen too, hated them too 😂

PicaNewName · 27/11/2022 07:56

@Newwardrobe I'm probably not the best person to ask as I went for a statement colour for the units that I liked (painted doors though so relatively easy to change if I wanted to). (Which would be way easier to do than all the walls and high ceilings).
Is keeping the original floor tiles an option? They look v practical hiding dirt.

From all the above suggestions, a marlbe looking worktop is my favourite.

Newwardrobe · 27/11/2022 08:53

Shall I ask if I can change doors to the grey?

I would go a bit darker than the floor. We have a natural wood effect LVT from Polyflor and it’s been amazing. Doesn’t show up any dirt. That’s my prerequisite of any flooring.

I'd stick with white, much nicer.

The wood effect work top looks fine in a small area but when I did the visualiser it looks awful

Existing ones are better. Why replace for the sake of it?

WilsonMilson · 27/11/2022 09:53

The colours are just too similar. I prefer the mottled one, but you need to go darker on the floor or the worktop.
The existing dark grey floor needs to go, but I would either go butchers block worktops and the mottled floor or almost the reverse of this and go for a chocolate coloured floor. I’ll try to find a pic.

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 27/11/2022 09:57

Don't change to faddish grey. White is classic and versatile.

I'd go with marble worktop and a wood-look floor in a significantly darker shade. Those pale woods are too trendy and American for my taste.

WilsonMilson · 27/11/2022 10:01

I’d go darker on your worktops - like this. In the second pic, both worktops and floor are dark too, which is nice, but often dark floors can show every single crumb. Personally I’d go with the dark worktops and mottled floor, or rethink the whole thing and go for dark in both.

I can't tell you how truly awful the existing tiles are , I'm having the whole kitchen refitted so will definitely be replacing them.

Definitely not grey cabinets whatever else you do!

WilsonMilson · 27/11/2022 10:24

@Newwardrobe you’re right, the existing tiles need to go. I cannot fathom why anyone is saying to keep them. I really like your shaker choice for cupboard doors, cream is less stark than white though and goes with everything. Don’t listen to anyone saying grey doors, it’s a fad and won’t stand the test of time.

balalake · 27/11/2022 10:25

Mottled would be my choice.
