I've got DD:
Christmas bedspread
Julia Donaldson book advent
Wooden keepsake advent
Elf on the shelf activities book
Little Miss Christmas book
Reindeer headband
Christmas PJs

Baby DS has got a white chocolate calender, a wooden keepsake advent and PJs.

In fact ours started because there was a pile of stuff that needed to come out of the loft (advent calendars, books, elf etc) before the decorations went up later in December. So just makes sense to keep everything that needs to come out 1 December in one box together.

RosaMoline · 24/11/2022 21:03

So glad I was born in 1967. Getting ridiculous now. Christmas Eve boxes, Proms, Baby Showers, Wedding Showers, OTT Hen Dos overseas, Gender Reveal parties. Bah!

What is a Christmas Eve box?

Christmas pj's & dressing gowns, the stash of Christmas books, a new Christmas activity book each, a bendy straw cup each, a Santa letter writing set (more for DS but DD has to have everything her big brother does!) and a festive headband type thing each.
We do it on the first Saturday of December instead though so there's time to play and it spreads it out a bit with the elf and the advent calendar!

Lurchintowardsyourfavouritecity · 24/11/2022 21:08

I’m too invested in this thread 😂 now I’ve just read people don’t understand the concept of Christmas books?! You’ve never heard of mogs Christmas, the jolly Christmas postman, the dinosaur that pooped Christmas, the christmasaurus?? Yes as they are Christmas themed they go in the loft in January and come back out again 1 Dec!!

What is a Christmas Eve box?

You put your New Year’s Eve box inside it, so it doesn’t get spoiled.

AnchorWHAT · 24/11/2022 21:10

Ffs Christmas is on 25th December, anyone who celebrates it gets stuff on that day, the whole Xmas eve, advent chocolate or any other consumerism before that is a load of nonsense as is elf on the shelf and all that, get some perspective people.

Changechangychange · 24/11/2022 21:12

Lurchintowardsyourfavouritecity · 24/11/2022 20:56

A lot of people are misunderstanding what a 1st Dec box is- talking about consumerism and landfill. We have in ours fabric advent calendars that get re used each year, an elf that comes out every year, all the Xmas books that come out every year, Xmas blankets that come out every year. Bought new is a candle, maybe one book and chocolates for the calendars and then Christmas pjs once every 2-3 years. One or two crafts do do in December. And that’s it. A lot of you have never even heard of it so have completely misunderstood what’s in most people’s.

That’s not what OP is describing though, is it? She’s bought a load of Christmas-themed tat, toys and sweets and put it in a box…

I hardly think a chocolate advent calendar indicates a loss of perspective!

Lurchintowardsyourfavouritecity · 24/11/2022 21:20

Well more fool her if she is in fact poor and struggling to afford stuff. The vast majority on this thread who do do the boxes have said it’s mainly the same staff each year. A nice ritual/tradition to dig into the box every 1 December and remember this book, remember that bit of cracker tat that found its way into the box etc etc. we’ve got Christmas glasses (spectacles) that come out every year (I can’t remember where they came from!) that the kids always have a laugh putting on. It’s not always mindless consumerism is what I’m saying.

gamerchick · 24/11/2022 21:36

Ah man, you know what OP, the past couple of years have sucked arse for kids and adults alike. You do what you want to bring something nice into your lives. Enjoy.

mathanxiety · 24/11/2022 21:41

@Lurchintowardsyourfavouritecity

I've never heard of any of that. The Christmasaurus?

Clearly Christmas isn't a religious holiday for a great many people.

faux puzzlement
People have genuinely never heard of this, me included.

To be fair until a couple of years ago I thought I personally invented this when I got my Christmas stuff out of the loft. It was only by reading Mumsnet that I realised plenty of other people do this too!

SnotRag22 · 24/11/2022 21:42

Cordeliathecat · 24/11/2022 20:20

All nonsense. Christmas is celebrating the birth of Christ. Nothing more. It’s not about presents and spoiling children. I’m not particularly religious but I am Christian. I use the festivities to remind my kids about some values shared with the Christian faith. We volunteer more over Christmas period, love thy neighbour and all that. We pause our busy lives and spend time with each other. Sure, I give the kids a few presents on Christmas Day but that’s an aside. The main point of the period is to attend church and help in the community. Advent doesn’t even start on 1 December FFS.

I don’t see the point of celebrating Christmas at all if you’re going to ignore the whole point of it. I was horrified one year when my 2 or 3 year old claimed that Father Christmas was Jesus’ father. I quickly changed how we celebrate Christmas from then on.

For a huge, huge amount of people in the UK, Christmas had absolutely nothing to do with Jesus.

eelieza · 24/11/2022 21:43

why two advent calanders. I would just get the keepsake one

Changemaname1 · 24/11/2022 21:45

Mine will have 25 little chocolates in all behind little doors aka an advent calender

Seriously what fresh hell is this now

DottieUncBab · 24/11/2022 21:45

A December the 1st box?????? 😂 😂 😂

londonmummy1966 · 24/11/2022 21:45

I was in SOuth Ken and near the independently owned Medici Gallery that always has fabulous advent calendars so I bought the DC one each. Delighted to say that they are not the chocolate variety. That is quite enough for December - and I have made sure that they know that Advent starts before December this year....

Their what now? Um. Nothing? I will be hoping this is something that doesn't catch on. I think I must be a grinch though 😂🎅

What ! My god it's Christmas soon . I've never heard of this and it's ridiculous .

I might steal the craft bits idea - Excellent idea to encourage down time in December!

Yes definetly!,we've been saving up the toilet roll cardboard since summer as dd wants to make her own advent calender this year, she saw something on YouTube where you arrange them in rows to make an Xmas tree shape, fill them with chocs and wrap the whole thing in paper, then number each section for each day, there's loads of videos on yt to make Xmas crafts with stuff we already have round the house, especially toilet roll cardboard ha!

You will be horrified to hear that DS came home from school and proudly announced that Baby Jesus was the God of Suns Grin

I’m absolutely shocked that a poster who was relieved their DD got one hot meal a day at school, who wrapped their baby in blankets when cold as couldn’t afford heating is wasting money on absolute tat and a non event 1st December box. Some advice on financial management is clearly needed @TinyPhotoFrames

Quite.

CaronPoivre · 24/11/2022 22:29

Ours is just a box of matches to light the advent candles each Sunday. It’s technically a 27th November box this year. Except we’re away. So it’s a 4th December box. No. We’re still away. Might have to be an 11th December box.
