If you were at primary school in the 80's did you wear plimsoles?

Somehow got chatting about footwear at school. I asked why the kids weren't wearing plimsolls. We always wore them inside. Apparently they didn't. I thought everyone did!!?

Yes, but we called them sandshoes not plimsolls. When we got a bit older, some of us girls wore Dr Scholl wooden soled clogs as our indoor school shoes and thought we were so cool😂

lottiegarbanzo · 23/11/2022 21:40

For indoor PE only.

Shinyandnew1 · 23/11/2022 21:40

We did, but only for PE. We wore normal (Clarks!) school shoes the rest of the time.

Yes - for PE!

LoopDiL00p · 23/11/2022 21:41

Haha, yes, we had plimsolls. And they weren't very good at staying on my feet during pe!

RefuseTheLies · 23/11/2022 21:41

Yes - sannies in my bit of Scotland.

TellMeWhere · 23/11/2022 21:42

Only for PE

Leah5678 · 23/11/2022 21:42

I wore them in the 00s lol.
Ds doesn't because his school expect the children to wear pe kit all day since Covid

Karwomannghia · 23/11/2022 21:42

Just for PE called ‘daps’ but I’ve been in a school within the past 20 years where they all had indoor shoes

Gunpowder · 23/11/2022 21:43

Clarks magic steps in the classroom, plimsolls for PE.

Stichintime · 23/11/2022 21:43

I remember at some point we wore slippers, but I don't think that lasted very long! I only remember because I wore them to go home in once and my mum was horrified!

Sherrystrull · 23/11/2022 21:43

Yes. Called plimmies.

user564576 · 23/11/2022 21:44

1990s, our school was brand new and required us to change into plimsolls/pumps

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 23/11/2022 21:44

We called them daps, too. My parents said they were a lot cheaper than trainers. I don't know if that means some kids had already started wearing trainers then and plimsolls were going out?

RampantIvy · 23/11/2022 21:45

I was at primary school in the 1960s and we only wore plimsolls for PE.

MargaretThursday · 23/11/2022 21:45

For games yes. But we called them "pumps".

MonkeyPuddle · 23/11/2022 21:46

Yeah, for indoor PE, we called them sannies. DS is 5 and he wears them as well.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 23/11/2022 21:47

Yes, we wore our 'pumps' for indoor PE.

perenniallymessy · 23/11/2022 21:51

At my school we had to wear plimsolls indoors so we changed our shoes every time we went in and out of school and had little cubbies to put our shoes and packed lunch boxes into. I think it was after one too many children had walked dog poo into the school.

My DS had them in reception for pe but after that we just bought trainers instead.

Emmelina · 23/11/2022 21:52

Black “daps” for us for PE. Think we wore them outside too though some kids had trainers!
we also had white lace up ones, though I think that was early secondary. Does anyone remember the shoe white stuff with the sponge to make them white again? If I try hard I can still smell it!

ThePoshUns · 23/11/2022 21:54

Daps here too.
Yes @Emmelina I loved the smell of that white stuff, probably highly toxic

FrightfullyFreezy · 23/11/2022 22:03

We used to call them pumps and yes, we had to change into them as soon as we got into the building.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2022 22:08

We had to wear them at all times when indoors. We changed into them as soon as we came in in the morning, shoes for break and lunch.
