Somehow got chatting about footwear at school. I asked why the kids weren't wearing plimsolls. We always wore them inside. Apparently they didn't. I thought everyone did!!?

daps, you me? yes

thaegumathteth · 23/11/2022 23:04

Yes but only for PE

AliceMcK · 23/11/2022 23:05

Only for PE. We called them pumps.

My DDs school asked for a pair to be left in school when my oldest started reception, they sat there for a whole year never being worn. I refused to buy any after that. I don’t think any other parents did. The kids wear pe kits and trainers all day on pe days so it makes no sense to bloody buy pumps too.

In the 70's I think we wore them in infant school when indoors, and in primary school onwards we did PE in them. When I was pregnant with one of my DCs in the 90s, I had a craving for the smell of (new, unworn) plimsolls!

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 23/11/2022 23:11

Yes for outdoor pe. Bare feet indoors

Dd has some she changes into pe kit in class. Wears plimpsolls to the hall then goes Bare foot. Why they can't just wear shoes i dont know. Shes reception so doesn't do pe outdoor yet. So definitely not needed

Floydthebarber · 23/11/2022 23:12

Late 80s and 90s. Infant school we had bare feet and pumps outside. Junior school we wore them inside and out. And called them pumps.

locketrocket · 23/11/2022 23:15

80s primary school and they were called daps (South Wales) Tbf, I still call my trainers daps 😂

YourWinter · 23/11/2022 23:16

I’ve not long had this conversation with my DD. She was taking DGS (in Y1) to get new school shoes and I asked whether he needed new plimsolls, wellies and leisure trainers too. Her response was, “Plimsolls? FFS Mum, it’s not the 1980s, they just wear trainers”!

Whatthetrolley · 23/11/2022 23:30

80s primary here and we used to change in to the black slip on plimsolls every morning, we had a wire shoe rack for the class and one morning the school hamster met an unfortunate end in the metal contraption. 🙈

I was so surprised when my eldest started Primary school that they didn't change shoes other than in the summer for PE when it was outside.

UsingChangeofName · 24/11/2022 00:35

Only for PE.

For games yes. But we called them "pumps".

Same here, either called Games (junior school) or PE (comprehensive), but defo called "pumps", other than that, unfashionable Clarks shoes were the order of the day.

ASafeHiddenPlace · 24/11/2022 08:00

In my 70s primary school we wore them for PE and called them gutties. If we forgot to bring them we did PE in bare feet . I remember the tube of “whitener” with the sponge.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 24/11/2022 08:02

Of course, as ‘indoor shoes’! I’ll be honest, in August every year I’ll get a pair (in adult size 6) because I bloody love them.

AriettyHomily · 24/11/2022 08:10

Yes we had indoor and outdoor shoes, plimsolls were the indoor shoes, and not to be worn outside for PE, we had trainers for that. The plimsolls were for the first two terms, summer term we had to wear what we called 'Jesus sandals'.

I started school in 84.

x2boys · 24/11/2022 11:42

Only.for Pe and we called them pumps

Swissnotswiss · 24/11/2022 11:50

Yes but only for PE. We called them daps.

NImumconfused · 24/11/2022 12:36

Called gutties at my school too, and we changed into them when we came indoors (late 70s/early 80s). My kids went to the same primary I did, and by that time they only wore them for PE.

RoachTheHorse · 24/11/2022 12:36

Yeah we did. I can still smell the rubber!

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia · 24/11/2022 12:43

Yes, for outdoor PE. Indoor PE was barefoot. Also wore them if we got our shoes wet walking to school, we each had a cubby hole that our kit stayed in Mon-Fri, lunchboxes etc.

Allmarbleslost · 24/11/2022 12:46

Only for PE. They were called daps.

PigLightingBastard · 24/11/2022 12:51

Daps, only for PE though.

Baconand · 24/11/2022 12:54

Daps for PE only

Rowthe · 24/11/2022 13:18

Nope.

We had to wear trainer for PE.

emmathedilemma · 24/11/2022 13:29

We only wore them for PE (both indoors and outside if I remember correctly)
