If you were at primary school in the 80's did you wear plimsoles?

Somehow got chatting about footwear at school. I asked why the kids weren't wearing plimsolls. We always wore them inside. Apparently they didn't. I thought everyone did!!?

Only for PE....and I just loved the smell of them

Forever42 · 23/11/2022 22:12

Yes, for PE. (Also, if you didn't have your PE kit, you had to do PE in your vest and knickers - in the infants anyway. Early 80s).

Smartiepants79 · 23/11/2022 22:14

In first school. Only for P.E

We wore them for indoor PE too

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2022 22:17

@Sherrystrull plimmies here too.

We definitely had them but I'm not 100% on when we wore them. I think we might have been the same as you though OP, in lower school anyway, changed into them for indoors then outdoor shoes (Clarks) for play time/lunch. Definitely became proper trainers for PE in later years though.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/11/2022 22:19

We thought we were really grown up when we got to year 5-6 and had white plimmies. I remember the Whitner stuff!

We definitely had then for PE. I did go to one school in ROI where we had to have slippers for indoors. That was weird.

Just for PE called ‘daps’ but I’ve been in a school within the past 20 years where they all had indoor shoes

To me plims have elastic and daps have laces

Early - mid nineties we don't even have a pe kit. We were all in vests and pants

mamaduckbone · 23/11/2022 22:39

Yes, I did, but so did my children. None of the schools I've ever taught at have done it though. I think it's just one of those things that some schools have done since the dawn of time!

Yes for PE. Most people called them pumps (NW), but my Welsh mother called them daps.

8lue8irds · 23/11/2022 22:40

Yes and my kids did 10-15 years ago too

TheTeenageYears · 23/11/2022 22:40

Yes as indoor shoes, playtime was a nightmare with everyone having to get changed into their outdoor shoes. We were barefoot for PE.

Lanaa · 23/11/2022 22:44

Yes! Pumps for inside. It was a great idea and I wish they would bring it back.

Gymmies worn indoors - not just for PE.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 23/11/2022 22:48

We had to change from outdoor shoes to plimsolls when we got to school although in Leeds they were called pumps rather than plimsolls.

I was really shocked when my DC went to school and only needed them for P.E!

SquigglePigs · 23/11/2022 22:51

Just for PE here too.

DorritLittle · 23/11/2022 22:56

Daps, here, just for PE (with vest and pants). The black ones with elastic.

My DM had indoor shoes in her 50s convent, but I don't expect they were daps.

Clarks magic steps in the classroom, plimsolls for PE.

This

Cuddlywuddlies · 23/11/2022 23:00

Yep or slippers 🤣

Madcats · 23/11/2022 23:01

Yes in the 70's we definitely went to school in shoes and changed into plimsoles to go into classrooms. There were pigeon-holes for our shoes.

QueSyrahSyrah · 23/11/2022 23:02

Yep pumps whenever we were indoors, late 80s early 90s.

I used to sit cross-legged in assembly and pick at the rubber along the edge.
