A new 'one (small) job a day' thread

ShinyHatStand · 19/11/2022 15:00

Can't find an active one of these, which I found massively motivating in the past.
The idea is to try and tackle one job around the house every day and report back. Even a really small job counts, especially if it's been irritating you for a while.

I've just sorted out the drawers in the hall that we use for shoes, bags etc. Took about 15 mins. More crap to throw away than I'd expected and I found all the gloves that had gone awol.

Another job on my list is to buy teen DS1 a new bed and wardrobe.
Any recommendations? I can't find anything at a sensible price with consistent reviews.

You can have my MiL's heirloom when I am done with it @ShinyHatStand 🤣🤣

ShinyHatStand · 20/11/2022 22:16

@Passanotherjaffacake bizarrely that is pretty much what he has now. Gave him the rack I use for drying clothes on their hangers to tide him over until I went shopping. Maybe I shouldn't bother - I'll just tell it's cool 😂

Love these threads for inspiration and motivation!

This weekend has been positive:

Saturday:
Treated mould around bath and sink sealant in bathroom. Used the trick with a bleach soaked strip of cotton wool and it has been surprisingly effective

Today (Sunday):
Ordered a replacement oven as ours has been faulty for a ridiculously long time and we haven't bothered to replace it. Need a new one before Christmas.

Plan for tomorrow:
School are asking for donations of bric a brac for their school fair so will take a bag full of random unwanted items during my lunch break as am WFH tomorrow.

Best of luck everyone - let's try and keep this going!

HappyMarriage · 20/11/2022 22:49

Oo joining so I can get involved tomorrow. Although I have so many small jobs (and big jobs) that I’m not sure where to start

SunshineBoy · 21/11/2022 06:19

Morning everyone!

I have a long list of the basics to do today but I really want to get the stairs hoovered so that’s my ‘one thing’ that I could easily dismiss but it will annoy me if I don’t get it done.

AltheaVestr1t · 21/11/2022 06:58

Oh fabulous! I found this thread really motivating last time. I started a new (busier) job two months ago and I haven't got a great deal done since then. Yesterday I cleaned the fridge, tidied the food cupboard and washed a mildewy window. Today I am travelling for work but I'll do some Xmas shopping on the train.

CarnivalSong · 21/11/2022 07:59

Quick 5 minute clear up of the dressing table that had 4 bags on the go. Everything used daily is now back in the basket. Old stuff chucked. Everything else put away.

ShinyHatStand · 21/11/2022 08:47

@HappyMarriage for me the thing is to not worry too much about where to start. But just make sure I get at least one thing done per day. the jobs done soon start to accumulate.

Oooh inspired by this! I tackled the middle area of the Wardrobe of Doom today. Put away several pairs of sandals in the hanging shoe rack; found an ancient doodad of my mum’s that no one wants (which is why it is in there!) so I will ceremonially throw that away (I have many other, nicer keepsakes); also two pairs of tatty tatty trainers belonging to DS1 and DS2 – so I will enquire about those. I hoovered up all the crud and now have a nice space for my boots (which don’t fit in the shoe hanging thing). Result! Just the left-hand side to do tomorrow.

@HappyMarriage the key is just to do one thing – only one thing. And keep doing it.

Sorted the cupboard under the stairs where coats, scarfs, hats, bags etc. go to die.

Was far easily than I though and not that much rubbish; just all piled on top of each other and disorganised. Things moved to their proper place and the cupboard now organised so we can find winter stuff and easily get the hoover in/out.

No excuse not to hoover now 🤔 Didn’t think that through!

Last night I sorted through one kitchen cupboard, where all my recipe books and a big pile of recipe cut outs were kept. I sorted through them and organised them in a folder split into starters/meat main/fish main/vegetarian main/dessert. Super satisfying! I also have got new recipes on my mealplan for this week as a result.

Tonight I'll sort through the spices cupboard. They're all on top of each other and keep falling out when I open the door. I also can never see what's actually in there it's such a mess, and we end up missing some spices and having multiple duplicates of others.

DH also cleaned around all the downstairs windows at the weekend so that's one less job for me!

Choice4567 · 21/11/2022 20:44

@ShinyHatStand I have achieved a clean fridge!! Very pleased with myself. How’s yours going?

mum2jakie · 21/11/2022 20:47

Snatched victory from the jaws of defeat

Didn't manage my planned task if dropping off donations to school as it was absolutely throwing down all day!

Didn't want to lose momentum so I've just cleared out the salad box and fridge, throwing out those jars/bottles with tiny amounts in.

Hoping for a dry day tomorrow to drop the stuff off. Also need to order a new microwave

Dh and I have outdone ourselves today!
We have had a skip delivered this week and spent all morning clearing our garage and sheds of rubbish and random stuff that should have gone years ago.
We put good stuff out in front of the skip and a sign for people to help themselves and that's mostly gone too .
I was on a roll and cleared out the Tupperware drawer too and chucked the mismatched stuff in the recycling.
Shattered now but feeling good 👍🏻

It felt cathartic just reading that!

Mine is I finally bought a huge bottle of white vinegar and de-limescaled all the shower heads - which also sorted the constant drip on one of them. I also cleared out dd’s en-suite which had become a bit of a dumping ground for suitcases and an old dead plant that I finally chucked out!

StewardsEnquiry · 21/11/2022 21:00

I'd like to join in please. I bought birthday cards for a party this weekend and a thank you card I needed during my lunch break.

ShinyHatStand · 21/11/2022 22:20

@Choice4567 I failed 😞
Worked until 6. Ferried teenager until 7.30. Then went swimming. Knackered.

I'll sort out the pile of crap on my chest of drawers in my bedroom on my way to bed. But the fridge will have to wait until tomorrow.

Done one side of family Xmas present wrapping tonight (early swap).

Got my eye on a massive kitchen drawer full of crap tomorrow.

Weekend, me and DD painting her room. That’s a big one but we’re fully committing to it 💪

Excellent work. Sometimes plans go awry, so just getting something done is great! Baby steps in the right direction. 😁

Choice4567 · 22/11/2022 07:41

@ShinyHatStand no worries there’s always today! The fridge has been on my list every day for 2 weeks before I finally did it!

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 22/11/2022 10:32

My cleaner is here today...so this morning I emptied all the bins and washed all towels

Airing cupboard is now half emptied as I'm sorting the lot. All old towels will be used for dog cleanup

Thrown a couple of old duvet covers and single sheets out. Found some long lost summer clothes in a vacuum sealed bag!

fancyfrogs · 22/11/2022 10:47

Oh i need to get in on this. DS2 due in Jan and feel like I've got so much to do - just little things I think but don't know where to start and getting stressed at usual day to day things piling up too.
Yesterday got round to cleaning the bathroom properly
Today will be hoovering/mopping downstairs and sorting through DS1 chaotic toy box for charity

Goldieshock · 22/11/2022 14:00

Stripped sofa cushions and they're drying out nicely to go back on later. Kids will have to sit on blankets if needs be!
