A new 'one (small) job a day' thread

ShinyHatStand · 19/11/2022 15:00

Can't find an active one of these, which I found massively motivating in the past.
The idea is to try and tackle one job around the house every day and report back. Even a really small job counts, especially if it's been irritating you for a while.

I've just sorted out the drawers in the hall that we use for shoes, bags etc. Took about 15 mins. More crap to throw away than I'd expected and I found all the gloves that had gone awol.

Welcome @BeautyGoesToBenidorm
Fantastic effort. I was barely managing a shower when ds was that little. Don't overdo things 🙂

I'm feeling moderately smug
Friday is usually my tv evening on the sofa while the rest of the household is out. This evening I dragged myself off the sofa and:

  • Cleared and washed the 15ish water bottles, flasks etc that were cluttering the kitchen windowsill.
  • Emptied and sorted the cupboard under the sink making enough clear space for a load of stuff that had been living on the counter.
  • ran the washing machine on a limescale blitz wash (it floods if we don't do this reasonably often

Took about 35 mins all in.
And as a bonus I found the silver polishing cloth at I bought ages ago so I'm now cosied up in bed with an audiobook sorting out and cleaning my jewellery, much of which had become unuseably tarnished.

Well done everyone. Great progress.

Had a new oven delivered and installed today so one step closer to bringing the kitchen back up to scratch. Tomorrow, need to invest in some new oven trays to match the sparkling new oven. Also need some kitchen gloves to clean the hood filter with some powerful cleaning stuff. We've got this!

mum2jakie · 25/11/2022 21:41

Welcome @BeautyGoesToBenidorm and congratulations on your little one! Anything you can achieve at that stage is a bonus!

ShinyHatStand · 25/11/2022 21:49

Exciting @mum2jakie !
Fwiw we've switched to using silicone trays for lots of things in the oven. So much easier to keep clean. We've got a couple of loaf tins sized ones that are fab for things like baked potatoes and dishwasherable.

OP posts:
mum2jakie · 25/11/2022 22:04

Good idea. Might look into silicone, thanks!

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 26/11/2022 09:10

@ShinyHatStand and @mum2jakie, hello and thank you for your kind comments! My middle DS is 8, so having a newborn again has been a shock to the system 😅

Today DS8 and DS11 are here (their dad and I share contact 50/50), so at least I've got a bit of chatter (read: arguing/squabbling/talking bollocks about Minecraft!) whilst DP's at work. Plus they're doting big brothers, so I'll be taking full advantage of that to get a few jobs done 😁

I think today will involve sticking the wash on a few times, and hopefully cleaning the kitchen. As long as I get a couple of loads of washing/drying done, I'll feel better.

How about everyone else here? What are you all planning for the day?

StewardsEnquiry · 26/11/2022 12:29

I have taken the junk out of my car and started to vac but the Dyson handheld ran out of charge!!! So that will have to be another try for another day.

Tomorrow's little job is to sort through my wrapping paper drawer which will barely close and give away the bits I don't like any more.

ShinyHatStand · 26/11/2022 13:53

Good effort @StewardsEnquiry
Shame about the vac.

I finally tackled the fridge. Not quite done but the worst bits are now clean. And in a master class of multitasking I chucked all the elderly veg into a pot on the hob so now have a bonus vat of yummy soup for lunch. Result

This was the first job on this thread that took longer than I'd expected. Mainly because the fridge was more grim than I'd realised.

This afternoon I have a choice between finishing the fridge or tackling the garden. Might opt for the latter while the weather is reasonable.

Great effort by all!

I have moved on to the bathroom where I have used wooden skewer and eyebrow tweezers to clean all the yucky soaped-up hair (mine tbf) out of the bath drain and the yucky soap residue from the sink drain. very satisfying. also only took about 10 mins and the bath drains really well.

BeautyGoesToBenidorm · 26/11/2022 15:19

@clary, you're made of stronger stuff than I am - hair in plugholes turns my stomach! Nice work 😁

hahaha I'm a secret sporner really and that is the house cleaning equivalent😂

ShinyHatStand · 26/11/2022 16:20

I abandoned the garden plan. Decided it would be annoying to leave the fridge half done so I finished that.
And had a half-hearted go at cleaning the bins. Which were way more yucky than a hairy plug hole 😂
Have left the worst of it soaking outside to be sorted out tomorrow.

Lentilweaver · 26/11/2022 18:50

My 1 minute job today was to put away some summer clothes still hanging around and get out some jumpers from storage.

MotherOfPuffling · 26/11/2022 20:40

I managed to sort and tidy the cat food cupboard. Sounds daft but the last delivery was basically all over the floor and needed putting away. Finding energy to do anything is hard at the moment so I’m counting that as a win 😊

ShinyHatStand · 26/11/2022 21:18

Well done @Lentilweaver and @MotherOfPuffling
Main thing is that you didn't miss a day. Every little helps.

autienotnaughty · 26/11/2022 21:34

Cleaned the cutlery drawer out today

ShinyHatStand · 26/11/2022 22:23

Well done @autienotnaughty.
Another job to add to my list Grin

Love this idea, thanks for this thread. I wasn't feeling well today but will try to do something tomorrow

MotherOfPuffling · 26/11/2022 22:41

Thank you @ShinyHatStand 😊 If I can I want to clear and tidy my desk tomorrow. I love the idea of trying to get just one thing a day done. Usually there is so much and I get overwhelmed and do nothing.

XenoBitch · 26/11/2022 22:48

Failed today. Not done any chores at all. Might try and empty the kitchen bin tonight

mum2jakie · 26/11/2022 22:56

I bought the new baking trays as planned and stored some Halloween toys back in the kids room ready for next year! Also ordered a Christmas present. (Am so far behind with Christmas shopping this year!)

hulahoopqueen · 27/11/2022 03:49

Got the 2 Christmas decoration boxes out of the garage and replaced with 2 boxes of old toys to be donated as DC no longer play with them.
Quick win, as DH likes to say!

clary · 27/11/2022 08:30

I love this thread!
This am I tidied the top drawer in the bathroom - a lot of inter teeth brushes that I have stashed in one box, binned some out of date exzema cream of DD's, also a grim foot file, looks a lot tidier.

StewardsEnquiry · 27/11/2022 12:20

I have just done my job for today. I have sorted and tidied the wrapping paper and gift bags, and found some to give away to a friend. I had a one minute job this morning as well, which was to put away my hair straighteners and put my lap top on to charge.

mum2jakie · 27/11/2022 13:46

Not managed anything particularly productive so far today but have visited my mum and taken her our old iron as my OH has bought a new one. Pretty sure that Marie Kondo tells you not to pass things on to relatives but it's a working iron so seems a shame not to
