If you had a chance to vote again for Brexit would it be leave or remain?

Just saw a poll which said Public support for Brexit is at an all-time low, with one in five Brexiteers now saying they think it was wrong to vote to leave the EU. If you had a chance to vote again how would you vote - trying to make it a goady thread so feel free not to mention if you were remain or leave last time.

For me - I'd vote remain

Remain.

The shocking impact of Brexit was just laid bare at today's Treasury Committee
Higher food prices
Reduced wages
Reduced business investment
Falling trade
Business damaged by extra costs & paperwork
Higher inflation

Its irrelevant really isn't it now
I mean if I picked my lottery numbers again I would pick the winning ones now I know what they are but life isn't like that and you can't just go back

Your comparison would only work if the winning lottery numbers had been entirely obvious to almost half the population before the draw was made.

Dogtooth · 17/11/2022 16:37

I'd imagine there was a remain majority straight after the referendum that's been increasing over time. Plenty of people made a protest vote thinking remain would win. Plus demographics are not on leave's side.

It's a massive dog's dinner which is why no politician wants to mention it. I expect we'll wait ten years then quietly admit it was stupid and we should rejoin.

Voted remain and would do so again. Thank god I married an Irishman so my children will get EU passports when their current ones are up for renewal. I am in the process of getting Dutch nationality thanks to my mum.

RufusthefIoraImissingreindeer · 17/11/2022 16:51

Remain again

ChocolatSouris · 17/11/2022 17:36

Schilderswijk I married a Dutchman which is proving very useful, groetjes Smile

KezzabellaB · 17/11/2022 17:38

I'd vote remain this time if I had the opportunity

ToastAndJames · 17/11/2022 17:47

I voted leave, would now vote remain. Perhaps naively I had thought that we’d end up in a position a bit like the EEA (even if not in the actual EEA) gaining some sovereignty but not undermining our trading relationship or ending FOM. Obviously that’s a long way from what has happened- this feels like the worst of all worlds, all downside, no real increase in sovereignty, no FOM and trade has been badly hit.

I also find it depressing how many people on both sides seem to be taking pleasure in how terribly things have worked out- remainers saying “I told you so” and leavers saying they don’t care. What a mess.

Topseyt123 · 17/11/2022 17:51

Remainer here, and I'd definitely vote remain again.

Brexshit is such a shit show. Where are all these marvellous trade deals and sunlit uplands that Boris was promising? Very little has materialised and there is absolutely no realistic solution to the Northern Ireland question that doesn't trash the Good Friday Agreement.

No, everyone wanted it to work out. Absolutely nobody wanted to say ‘I told you so’ as it became more and more obvious you’d been sold a lie. I absolutely did not want to get worse off just so I could say ‘see?’, I’m still desperate for it to work out. But it won’t, because it could never be better than we had it and that was glaring obvious from the beginning.

Vigneau · 17/11/2022 17:56

The disinvestment in the U.K. and principally the south east of England is already starting to happen. Wait another 10-15 years and our economy will have dropped to about 12th place.

Vigneau · 17/11/2022 17:57

Further, if you assume Scotland votes to leave (inevitable).

I’m not saying that people didn’t want it to work out, only that I find it a bit sickening when I see people take pleasure in the fact it hasn’t. If you don’t encounter such people then lucky you.

Sounds like you wanted a soft Brexit. If I had to accept Brexit at all (I don't) then a soft one would have been more palatable.

Unfortunately though, Frosty the No Man did not agree and threw away just about any possible deal which might have allowed some of what we stood to lose.

My DD needs to spend 6 months studying and working in Europe as part of her university course at the start of next year and getting her visas sorted out is now a nightmare. Before Brexshit, and with FOM, it would have been no problem at all. Now there is so much red tape because the Schengen rules only allow 90 days in a period of 180 days. She needs a minimum of 180 days and very possibly a few weeks more than that.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 17/11/2022 18:03

I don’t take any pleasure in it. Even as a remainer I wanted Brexit to work and hoped for the best. I had a friend in financial services who warned London would lose its position as a global financial capital which has now come about. I wanted it to work for our benefit, but all my fears have come true.

Bécassine · 17/11/2022 18:07

Wasn't old enough to vote. Was invested in it, for personal and political reasons. Would vote remain. I don't think general voting age should be younger but I will probably not stop resenting not getting a say in something that's going to affect me, the country, and my family for the rest of my life. Especially with the generational divide on the leave vote.

VollywoodHampires · 17/11/2022 18:09

Leave

I don’t think those people exist. Nobody is pleased it didn’t work out.

Topseyt123 · 17/11/2022 18:12

Even my stubborn Leave voting DH suddenly admitted recently that "Brexit has damaged our currency", and that is the first time I have heard him admit anything negative about it. He won't admit anything yet, but I suspect that even he is just beginning to have second thoughts about it and doubt some of the shit he previously believed.

He can also hardly fail to see the difficulties our student DD and her friends are having with the visa requirements now as they embark on their year abroad, the majority of them within the EU. He won't dare to try and defend Brexshit to her (or me) again, I don't think.

remainers saying “I told you so”

There’s no joy in being right. Brexit was an act of self harm.

There was never a chance in hell that we’d get access to the European market on favourable terms and keep freedom of movement. People just heard what they wanted to hear and ignored the rest.
