If you had a chance to vote again for Brexit would it be leave or remain?

Just saw a poll which said Public support for Brexit is at an all-time low, with one in five Brexiteers now saying they think it was wrong to vote to leave the EU. If you had a chance to vote again how would you vote - trying to make it a goady thread so feel free not to mention if you were remain or leave last time.

For me - I'd vote remain

Billy Bragg isn't for everybody but his sensitive song The Full English Brexit is the best summation of what it feels like to be a Leave voter he's not ridiculing leavers - he's trying to see the other point of view. Gandhi said he went into negotiations trying to put himself on the other side of the table, to understand what the other side wants and feels, and how he would approach things if he were in their place.

Because a lot of people didn't like being in the EU and didn't perceive there being any benefit to them of being in it. The government asked the people a question, the people gave their answer, and the government acted upon it. That is democracy in its purest form.

“Because a lot of people didn't like being in the EU and didn't perceive there being any benefit to them of being in it.”

… that is not a coherent argument

carefulcalculator · 24/11/2022 19:36

didn't perceive there being any benefit this sums up the stupidity of the vote in a nutshell - based on people's 'perception' - infuriating.

Florenz · 24/11/2022 19:41

This thread is pointless.

The UK being in the EU was of no perceivable benefit over 50% of the UK population. Hence, Brexit.

IF you're trying to argue that there benefits that people couldn't perceive, then what is the point of something that people cannot perceive?

A lot of these questions should have been asked a long, long time before the referendum. Instead of just calling people who wanted to leave "idiots", "uneducated", "bigots" etc.

the facts were right there in front of you. The fact that leavers chose to ignore them is not a justification to vote to leave the EU. I am afraid it just displays total ignorance and possibly stupidity

what else is there to say ?

The fact you will not state a single fact just sums up my point.

But she is right she was asked a question and she answered it and it was a binary democratic choice. That much is true but her seeming refusal to reflect with the benefit of hindsight as to what it has achieved says volumes for the fact that it should never be asked in the first place.

That is democracy in its purest form.

I think Scotland and Northern Ireland might beg to differ.

I’m sure the people of NI would like a functioning government rather than the DUP holding the country hostage because they supported glittery unicorns.

Yes but to use your reference of Gandi - he was right within the context of the need for people to have their own country free from the interference of the British Raj. That is a world away from our status within the EU.

To summarise;

  • we were a sovereign state
  • a member of a free market bloc of some 500 million people trading freely
  • free movement ( which I agree was badly handled by Labour ) provided billions in tax revenue to the government and kept wage inflation down
  • free market access - the UK had the best deal ever - our own currency, not part of Schengen and one of the three main powers with a massive say in how things were done
  • that made the uk a fantastic bridge into Europe - hence why foreign investment into the uk jumped by some 50% after 1997
  • no barriers to trade - and a stable political government

do leavers not see the connection between the political impasse in the Uk and brexit ??

Brexit is not deliverable in the form you ( as leavers wanted) I’m afraid it is that simple

that’s it !!

Oh ye of little faith ...

● Reintroduced our iconic blue passports. All new British passports are now
blue, a return to their original appearance, with the colour first introduced in 1921,and updated to be the most technologically -advanced and secure British passports ever, with the carbon footprint from their manufacture reduced to net zero.

● Reviewing the EU ban on imperial markings and sales. This will give
businesses and consumers more choice over the measurements they use.
The Benefits of Brexit: How the UK is taking advantage of leaving the EU 7
Imperial units like pounds and ounces are widely valued in the UK and are a core
part of many people’s British identity.

● Enabling businesses to use a crown stamp symbol on pint glasses. The
Crown Stamp is a proud emblem of our heritage that people remain fond of. We
have begun the process of allowing it to be used once again, a fitting tribute to Her Majesty's Platinum Junilee

But how do these help the economy or people struggling with high inflation or trade barriers etc ???

come on!

Florenz · 24/11/2022 21:23

How is kept "wage inflation down" for the people working for low wages?

If being in the EU was so good, why couldn't people see the benefits of it? And if people couldn't see the benefits, were there really any benefits at all?

The fact is, there were benefits to some, but they were not spread equally. It was mostly the wealthy and highly educated that benefitted from Britain being in the EU. Whereas normal people suffered as they were forced to compete with cheaper immigrant workers, which lead to more inequality. So it is hardly surprising that Brexit won the day.

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/11/2022 01:32

@Florenz, how many times do the benefits of the EU to UK citizens, particularly low and middle income earners, have to be explained to you?

I've done explained them to you. Other posters have explained them to you. Many, many times.🙄

carefulcalculator · 25/11/2022 01:52

Whereas normal people suffered as they were forced to compete with cheaper immigrant workers, which lead to more inequality. This is such nonsense, the inequalities we see in the UK are so much greater than in other European countries, and are likely to increase further, as we can see now, despite leaving. Everyone is poorer than pre-Brexit, but those on lower incomes more so. That 6% extra on food bills caused by Brexit disproportionately hits lower income households.

The Leave campaign lied, everyone can see that now.

There are benefits to oxygen but I can’t see that either. Post Brexit we have become a poorer nation,. Prior to Brexit this was predicted. Let’s face it, most politicians opposed it as did the great majority of economists, academics and foreign leaders. They went to great lengths to point out it was a bad idea but we’re faced.by a tsunami of bullshit written on buses, in newspapers and particularly on line. The online stuff seems to have largely been funded by a nation which is now an international pariah because they invaded a neighbour.

if anyone can’t see this, then they don’t want to see it.

You don't seem to understand the concept of differing opinions. Maybe that's why remain lost. You can't just tell people people something and expect them to accept it if it is contradicted by their lived experience.

I think on issues like this you need to go beyond your personal lived experience. What has happened to other people is highly relevant, not least because it could start affecting you directly at any time.
