Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

@XenoBitch @Chikapu @DarlingDog

Thank you, he's a very good boy! He's not allowed at the table when we have company and he gets v grumpy about it 😂

ellieboolou · 13/11/2022 19:33

No he has his own bowls, he does sleep on our bed though with his own throw. Will also be known to lick floors quite often but that's what mops are for.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 13/11/2022 19:35

No because I don't have a dog.
The cat however loves leftovers. No dishwasher and yes she sleeps with us.

Christ that is disgusting. Pet owners have no hygiene standards.

Excuse me, some of us do

silentpool · 13/11/2022 19:38

I don't have a dog but the cat has never been allowed to eat food off my plate or go near the dishwasher.

I have always been very strict about this as I don't like begging or animals stealing food from your plate 🤮

woodhill · 13/11/2022 19:41

I hate anything like this

Mil used to do this with cat, it is vile

woodhill · 13/11/2022 19:42

No dishwasher

gamerchick · 13/11/2022 19:48

I knew people who used to let their dogs do this and then just put them back in the cupboard.

It's a nasty habit to let your dogs get into.

hand washing is only grim if your actually using a washing up bowl. Same as bathing just sitting in filth. Which is also have a dishwasher works a lot of the time by the way. Recycling it’s own water during certain stages of the “clean”.

my washing up is done of scolding water, no bowl and a new sponge.

That's overkill, I think. Unless you are eating from plates made of something really absorbent, washing up in hot soapy water is enough. I use dishcloths, and I do use a clean one every day, but it's used all day for washing up. I'd only get a new one out if it was a mammoth cooking day and there was a lot of roasting dishes. I thought the whole point of sponges was that they don't absorb and retain like a cloth - I do agree that they're grim when they retain crumbs etc. That's why I prefer a cloth. I've crocheted loads from dishcloth cotton and they're really practical.

Washing up bowls are easily cleaned. I spray my bowl and sink with a vinegar/washing up liquid spray after emptying all the water, and they're clean for next time.

Back on pet bowls - I put them in the dishwasher, but I usually wash them up by hand right at the end.

I don’t like dogs but I’m not horrible. 😂

Sunnysal · 13/11/2022 20:23

Is all this before or after your dog/cat licks it's bottom?

LimeCheesecake · 13/11/2022 20:24

I do wonder what the pearl clutchers think is going to get them from a dog licking a plate that then goes in the dishwasher, washed and heated to a temperature that is hot enough to sterilise. The plates have been sterilised by the dishwasher - it doesn’t matter it had a bit of dog spit on it - or human spit either.

the main reason to stop the dog doing it is she gets gravy on her ears then drops that on the kitchen floor which is pretty annoying.

but then MN is full of people who bleach everything.

purplepencilcase · 13/11/2022 20:25

Yes I do!

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 20:32

I wish saying ‘pearl clutching’ could be banned from MN. So overused on here and means nothing now.

Spidey66 · 13/11/2022 20:37

I admit, I let my dog lick the plates. I figure if they're going in the dishwasher at 65degrees for 2 hours, plus a steam dry, that they'll be OK. If we didn't have a dishwasher, I wouldn't let her do it.

fruitypancake · 13/11/2022 20:39

Always

legalseagull · 13/11/2022 20:58

Sometimes I even let my dog drink water from a [brace yourself] human cereal bowl!! Grin

Why is there water in your cereal bowl?

Sunnysal · 13/11/2022 22:16

Not convinced that 80deg kills all known germs.
Usually need 100deg for a proper autoclave type clean.

StarDolphins · 13/11/2022 22:28

i’m going to hell, I kiss my dog all the time & he sleeps on my bed! He’d even be able to lick my plate if he didn’t have a restrictive diet. People saying they lock their arses - mine isn’t hot on hygiene, literally just leaves it for the groomer!

SuePerb7 · 13/11/2022 22:36

We do, I don’t have a problem with it. All those repulsed should probably never eat in a pub or restaurant that allows dogs in 😂
