Do you let your dog lick the dishes?

Lunch at a friend's house last week. Chatting happily. Took plate over to the sink, rinsed it, put it in the dishwasher. Turned around to see her standing behind me holding plate out for dog to lick before adding to the dishwasher.

I love dogs but I have to admit my stomach did turn a little on seeing this. Is this standard for dog owners? I grew up with dogs and we never did this, but I'm wondering if we were in the minority?

Yes I let this happen and my house is clean and tidy ... I can imagine that some people would find this unheigenic etc but my dogs are my family and I don't worry about such things ! Plenty of other things to worry about ! Blush

I never give this sort of thing a moment’s thought either.

NCcoziwannaNC · 13/11/2022 18:20

No just no!
Ils did this. I stopped eating there after that. They don't have a dishwasher. So hand wash only.

buzzy06 · 13/11/2022 18:22

Our dog eats off plates and then they go in the dishwasher , he also sleeps on the beds and sofas and nobody has died of anything yet .

Standards for hygiene: If I haven't died it's ok🤣🤣 my word

People are mad. We've got not washing with soap, changing beds bi-annually, dogs licking plates and faces, getting out of bed and putting shoes on inside,

No.

buzzy06 · 13/11/2022 18:25

Presumably because you know they’d not want to accept anything to eat/drink if they saw it so on some level you are aware how disgusting it is.

Omg pp not letting guests know your dog licks your plates... just no, that's such a violation. That's not okEnvy

faffadoodledo · 13/11/2022 18:25

Yes.
As do our best friends (a doctor and nurse couple). No qualms at all.
Every time I've ever made jam the recipe has said run the jars through a hot dishwasher cycle to sterilise.
I assume our plates are similarly sterilised by our hot dishwasher cycle.

I am sure lots of dog owners will be along to say they’ve always done it and nobody died yet. But it would be a huge eww from me.

My post from the beginning of the thread. I saw the future. Grin

MN at its usual I see.

Don't shower/change bedding/change pyjamas twice a day, you are disgusting and unhygienic.

Let a slobbering mutt eat and drink off your plates as a pre wash, totally normal, no one died yet!

1982mommaof4 · 13/11/2022 18:39

That is disgusting

Msmbc · 13/11/2022 18:40

Yes very normal dog owner practice, I have no issue with it, there's not gonna be any saliva left after a two hour dishwasher clean!

Frazzled2207 · 13/11/2022 18:44

Our family dog always did this. We def would not rinse the plates either.
it was a family joke that you could never reall tell just looking inside the dishwasher if plates were dirty or clean. As they were either clean or recently licked

(the dishwasher always went on though)
if the dishwasher goes on at a high heat I cannot see an issue with this.

That’s different as a handwash will never be as hot.

But a lot of washing up liquid is anti-bac. I do not have a dishwasher (I am the dishwasher lol), but I use anti-bac liquid.

Frazzled2207 · 13/11/2022 18:56

@XenoBitch
fair point, but personally I trust heat over anti-bac

rainbowandglitter · 13/11/2022 19:06

No it's absolutely disgusting. Those that do are probably the same people that call them furbabies and let them sleep in their bed.

Ha, guilty as charged. It does not hurt anyone though.

Chikapu · 13/11/2022 19:14

I call my cat my furbaby and let him sleep in my bed but he's not allowed to lick plates, mostly because we don't let him have human food and partly because he licks his own bum.

windowwhy · 13/11/2022 19:16

We do, but only because we have the dishwasher. Before we had that they weren't allowed

OnABreeze · 13/11/2022 19:19

Ugh. Gross.

Agree with others regarding hygiene standards of pet owners. Those who let their cats walk all over the kitchen worktops or have their litter tray in the house. Just gross, gross, gross.

Mine eats at the table.

No beer though, unless he cleans his plate.

Same here Grin

Sparklingbrook · 13/11/2022 19:21

We had a dog when I was a child who ate it’s own poo. I think it was that that confirmed I was never going to be a dog owner.
The thought of her licking any plates. 🤢

Buildingthefuture · 13/11/2022 14:16

I do! Doesn’t bother me in the slightest, been doing it for more than 20 years, don’t know anyone with dogs who doesn’t! If you don’t like it, feel free not to visit.
I do have a separate washing machine for dog beds etc though, because I don't like the hair on everything!

Because you give all your guests a heads up that you let your dogs do that to the plates they're about to eat off of do you?
