I thought this was a really good explanation of how cold weather impacts ground combat operations and how easy it is to die of hypothermia without the right equipment and procedures

The Combatant Winter
Thank you, I caught up with reading that just now and it is brings to life the reality of what it is like fighting in the freezing cold.

The deaths going up has caught my eye and I suspect its this rather than movement on the front line. Kyiv has had its first snow recently. Video footage of the mud conditions around Svatove say that Ukraine isn't going anywhere fast and screams hell on the front lines, particularly for the Russians^

Being back into the 600s is a lot. It's the thing to watch right now with the lack of movement

There are currently many videos online of Ukrainian drones dropping grenades on Russian troops where they barely react to the explosions. It looks a lot like late-stage hypothermia
www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2022/11/27/russian-soldiers-are-freezing-to-death-in-eastern-ukraine/?sh=4eda717f4254

I saw that video with a Twitter commentary by Tom Warner.

It is haunting and horrifying. Seen from the drone those soldiers huddled in the hole look like a nest of baby mice. Then you see the explosion and smoke hit on the edge of where they are. They don’t jump or move as you’d expect. One man just burrows forward among the others to get a bit further from where it landed then flips down. Apparently they are so affected by hypothermia that they are completely unaware and indifferent, and though it’s possible they may be drunk too, that is not why they won’t move.

TheABC · 29/11/2022 23:39

I read the article - thank you for linking it (and thank you @MissConductUS for responding to my death figure up the thread). The images filled me with pity. I know the Russian army have been monsters to the Ukrainians, but so many of these men will be newly arrived, barely trained conscripts left to to die for no reason at all.

There's evil, then there is utter senseless waste.

blueshoes · 29/11/2022 23:54

Also from MissConductUS's link:

"Suicides evidently are on the rise. One especially gut-wrenching video depicts a Russian combatant in scrape outside Bakhmut trying to shoot himself in the chest as a Ukrainian drone watches from directly overhead. The Russian’s ungloved right hand is blue with cold, and he struggles to pull the trigger.

The video feed cuts. When we see the Russian again, he apparently has succeeded in killing himself. He doesn’t move when the drone’s bomb explodes beside him."

Utter despair.

Day 279, November 29th. Summary of #Arestovych and #Feygin daily broadcast
Posted on 29 November 2022

🔥Battlefield overview

🔥Kherson
Artillery duels continue. Ukraine has had more success with at least two large hits on Russian forces in the last 24h, with Russia sustaining heavy losses.

🔥Vuhledar
Ukrainian reinforcements arrived, aiding the Ukrainian defence. Russia stopped mentioning Vuhledar in their military reports as it’s hard to confess to failure.

🔥Mariinka, Horlivka & Avdievka
Clashes continue. Russia continues to attack Ukrainian defences near Mariinka, Pesky, Vodjanoe and Kamenka. Russian troops are trying to cut the road supplying Horlivka but will probably fail.

🔥Bakhmut
Russian forces are trying to advance near Avdievka attempting to partially surround Bakhmut. The Russian reinforcements transferred forces from Soledar to the Bakhmut to achieve some success. This is a part of the Russian aim to occupy the whole Donetsk region (current operational aim). Arestovych suggests that the Russian plans will fail here too.
The situation remains difficult as Russia has 9 times more artillery concentrated in the area. Ukrainian tank forces are essential for the defence of Bakhmut, working both as tank forces and artillery.

🔥Svatove-Kreminna
Reports of Ukrainian forces advancing in some areas near Svatove & Kreminna. The majority of clashes are tactical operations.

🔥Russia preparing for a massive missile strike
Russia is probably training and/or preparing for another massive strike on Ukrainian critical infrastructure. Russian airplanes were in the air for 4h, leading to the air-raid alert in Ukraine, but the attack didn’t happen yet.
Simultaneously, Russian IL-22 planes were in the air, probably performing surveillance and trying to sot Ukrainian anti-air-defences that massively decrease the current efficiency of Russian missile strikes on Ukraine – 70 out of 90 Russian missiles are intercepted by Ukrainian air-defence.

🔥Kursk (Russia)
Russian sources report on the shelling of Russian military targets in the Kursk region – probably another clash between the “Kursk People’s Republic” and “Belgorod People’s Republic”. Ukraine is lamenting this bloodshed and is offering its services as an intermediary in the negotiations between the “KPR” and “BPR”.

🔥NATO summit in Bucharest
NATO secretary Stoltenberg has stated that the question of Ukraine joining the alliance is completely adequate but may need to wait until the end of the war.
NATO is condemning the Russian attacks on Ukrainian critical infrastructure that leaves millions of Ukrainian civilians without basic human needs during the winter.
NATO does and will continue to support Ukraine. The main objectives of NATO right now are the supply of weapons to Ukraine and the restoration & defence of Ukrainian electrical infrastructure from the Russian missile attacks.
The key messages from NATO:
– Condemnation of Russian war crimes
– Continuation & increase of military support for Ukraine
– Defence of Finland and Sweden while they are ascending to NATO
– NATO will continue to support Ukraine and Georgia in their decision to join the alliance in the future

🔥No negotiations with Russia
German President Steinmeier stressed that there will be no recognition of the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russian aggressors. There will be no ceasefire, negotiations or peace deals to appease Russia. Any concessions to the aggressors and invaders will only encourage further aggression from Russia or similar totalitarian regimes.
Thus, after months of speculation and Russian employing all possible tricks to trigger the West pressuring Ukraine into negotiation and ceasefire (e.g. Minsk 3), the West has stated that there will be no appeasing of Russian aggressors or negotiations on Russian terms.

🔥NATO salesman of the year
Putin should indeed receive the “NATO salesman of the Year” award for “motivating historically neutral countries of Finland and Sweden to join NATO, rearming the Ukrainian army to the NATO standard, revitalising NATO alliance, American and European military complexes, eventually losing all the occupied territories while at the same time killing 100k of Russian troops and destroying the Russian army”.

🔥The US vs Wagner mercenary
Not only Prigozhin is wanted by the FBI but the US Government also started collecting data on Wagner mercenaries and their organizational structure. This is a potential preparation to declare Wagner mercenary group as a terrorist organization. Wagner has committed a large number of war crimes, not just in Ukraine but also in Mali and Syria. Therefore, it will be probably declared a terrorist organization.

🔥Belarus
Russia continues to pressure Lukashenko into entering the war. Nevertheless, the key question remains – “Is Belarus ready to enter the war?”. The answer is still a “ No.”.
Not just the motivation, but the combat readiness of the Belarusian troops remains very low.

🔥Medvedev threatening NATO
Medvedev is threatening NATO and claims that if NATO supplies Ukraine with Patriot complexes Russia will target them. In reality, Medvedev is just stating Russian frustration and attempting to prevent the supply of long-range weapons to Ukraine (e.g. ATACMS). Russia is afraid of NATO and afraid of NATO arming Ukraine with better weapons.

🔥The US and Germany aiding the restoration of the Ukrainian electrical grid
The US is giving Ukraine $53M and another $56M is coming from Germany to supply Ukraine with transformers and other key parts for the repair of the Ukrainian electrical grid.
While Russia can still organise another 10 massive attacks on Ukrainian electrical infrastructure, the Ukrainian electrical grid was constructed to withstand nuclear war and will endure the Russian attacks.

🔥Middle and long-range missiles for Ukraine
While the Latvian Foreign Minister suggested that Ukraine could target Russian airfields, Ukraine still needs to receive long-range weapons.
It’s reasonable to allow Ukraine to target the Russian military bases from where Russia launches attacks on Ukrainian civilians. Ukraine will eventually receive these weapons, so, why the unnecessary delay that only prolongs the suffering of Ukrainian civilians?

🔥China is in big trouble
China is experiencing major popular protests, mainly due to very strict anti-COVID rules, cyber-concentration camp model, and police state. This is exacerbated by other factors:
– a real estate market bubble
– a demographic crisis as the population is ageing
– Xi re-election for the third term and transition to the dictatorship
– Division and rivalry between cities and villages
– End of the current development model and slowing down of the economic growth
The protests and unstable situation in China, as well as Erdogan preparing for the military operation in Syria, are major international geopolitical factors that need to be considered.

Russia’s Secret Recruits Allegedly Abandoned, Starving, and Missing in Action

Roughly 100 foreign fighters recruited by Vladimir Putin’s private army have been left for dead in Ukraine, two sources in touch with the group told The Daily Beast.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 30/11/2022 10:33

I truly can't understand why they go to all the trouble of recruitment and transport just to abandon them. Also what the hell the recruits expected from Wagner ... they don't have a good name.

ISW Key Takeaways

Russian forces made marginal gains around Bakhmut on November 29, but Russian forces remain unlikely to have advanced at the tempo that Russian sources claimed.

The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (MoD) reported that Russian forces have likely stopped deploying battalion tactical groups (BTGs) in the past three months, supporting ISW’s prior assessments.

Russian forces continued to defend against Ukrainian counteroffensive operations around Svatove as Ukrainian forces continued counteroffensive operations around Svatove and Kreminna.

Russian forces continued limited ground attacks west of Kreminna to regain lost positions.

Russian forces conducted ground attacks near Siversk and Avdiivka, and in western Donetsk Oblast.

Russian forces continued strengthening defensive positions in eastern Kherson Oblast as Ukrainian forces continued striking Russian force concentrations in southern Ukraine.

Russian forces continued to struggle with outdated equipment and domestic personnel shortages amid official actions indicative of a probable second wave of mobilization.

An independent investigation found that Russia may have transported thousands of Ukrainian prisoners from penal colonies in occupied Ukraine to Russia following the withdrawal from the west bank of Kherson Oblast.

No huge surprise but surely better things to be spending money on...

Russia to invest in nuclear weapons infrastructure
Russia’s defence minister has said it will focus on nuclear arms infrastructure in 2023, including facilities to accommodate new missile systems. Sergei Shoigu told a meeting of the board of the department on Wednesday that it would be a priority for Russia next year. “When preparing the list of major construction facilities for 2023, special attention will be paid to construction in the interests of the strategic nuclear forces,” Shoigu was quoted by RIA news agency as saying.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 30/11/2022 12:42

I wonder if that means they had a good look at their existing nuclear armaments and decided they were no good? :)

MissConductUS · 30/11/2022 15:09

I think this is just a way of indirectly playing the nuclear card so it doesn't annoy China. Their army has been shattered and their economy is contracting. Expanding their nuclear force would not be a sensible use of very limited resources.

Day 280, November 30th. Summary of Arestovych and Feygin daily broadcast
Posted on 01 December 2022

🔥 Battlefield update:

🔥* Kherson:* Artillery duels across river, 🇺🇦 more successful due to longer range, guided munition and use of HIMARS.

🔥* Tokmak-Polohy: several large hits of 🇷🇺 facilities, over 500 killed, 50 vehicles destroyed.

🔥 Vuhledar: 🇷🇺 reports of not holding Pavlivka.

🔥 Marinka: 🇷🇺 attack attempts, 🇺🇦 hitting in response.

🔥 Avdiivka: 🇷🇺 attempting to encircle for 10th month, at south from Spartak-Opytne and at north from Verkhnotoretske-Kamianka.

🔥 Kurdiumivka: 🇷🇺 rushed to report capturing it, but then recalled. 🇷🇺 hoping to reach road Konstantynivka-Bakhmut and encircle it.

🔥 Soledar: strong 🇷🇺 attempts

🔥 Bilohorivka-Spirne: usual 🇷🇺 attack attempts

🔥 Kreminna-Svatove: local battles, attacks from both sides, no significant changes.

🔥 Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Nikopol, Zaporozhye, Kherson*: getting shelled

🔥 NATO meeting in Bucharest:
🇩🇪 O. Scholz – 🇷🇺 can’t win war in battlefield.
Even Putin knows, he has lost, it’s only about price of loss. 🇺🇦 is not buying, it’s fighting for capitulation, with conditions that 🇷🇺 immediately leaves, pays reparations, extradite war criminals, denuclearization.

🔥 World post-Russia:
🇺🇸 refusing to provide long range weapons to avoid further escalation. Their task is for conflict to be controllable. Money is only allocated to strategic plans and goals – and currently there are none. They can’t imagine world post-Russia, and can only vaguely guess post-Putin. Their goals are to not create more harm, as long as war is going in right direction, leaving them time for reaction.
However 1.5 months before USSR collapse, CIA report stated that USSR will last at least until 2020.
There needs to be a figure equal to Churchill or Roosevelt, willing to push for big goals – world post-Russia, or it’s denuclearization.

🔥 Day of radio-technical forces:
They see enemy bombers taking off, they assign targets. If not for them, there would be less missiles intercepted.

🔥 Transformations of the West:
West shows wonders in their transformations – Germany, France, Italy – all making fantastic changes. 🇩🇪 Steinmeier was calling for peace and following Minsk agreements for last 8 years, even if it requires 🇺🇦 another concession. Today he understands, that another peace treaty will only be abused by 🇷🇺 to regain forces.
It’s better than expected, and better than it was at 24th-28th of February.

🔥 Iran:
🇺🇸 Biden ready for military solutions to deny 🇮🇷 Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. Right now there are no 🇮🇷 missiles, nor new drones in 🇺🇦. Apparently consequences were explained to 🇮🇷.

🔥 Terrorism:
Discussions of labeling Wagner as terrorist organization.
🇺🇸 White house thinks recognizing 🇷🇺 as terrorism sponsor might be worse for 🇺🇦. 🇺🇸 doesn’t want to limit and confront 🇮🇳 India and 🇨🇳 China.
However 🇪🇺 E.U. Parliament and NATO Assembly did recognize 🇷🇺 as terrorism sponsor. 🇺🇸 wants to keep control, and slowly tighten grip, but everyone had enough of Wagner.

🔥 Losses:
Exact losses are national secret, as it allows enemy to evaluate efficiency and make strategic decisions. Approximate numbers were called by Zaluzhniy, Zelensky.
Unofficially Arestovych can tell that 🇺🇦 losses are between 10k and 20k killed. 🇺🇦 has high sanitary losses – it’s when solder is removed from battle for more than 1 day. 96% of wounded and ill are returned to service.
There exists following types of losses:
– non-returning: killed, POW, lost, died before reaching hospital
– sanitary: lost battle capabilities for more than 1 day
NATO has different types of causalities.
🇷🇺 has ratio of 1 killed to 1-2 wounded (occasionally 1:3), their medical care, equipment and evacuation times are terrible.
🇷🇺 has much more killed. Ratio of approximately 1 🇺🇦 killed to 7-7.5 🇷🇺 killed.
🇷🇺 total losses are over 100k killed and over 100k wounded.
🇺🇦 could have about 100k total wounded and killed, from which 80k are wounded and 72k returned to service.

🔥 Assistance:
Blinken: NATO and allies have supplied military assistance worth $40 bn, and will continue to assist. This includes transportation costs, training, servicing and repairs.
Compared to 🇬🇷 Greece receiving € 200 bn during 2008 crisis, it’s not difficult to provide 🇺🇦 with 400 bn worth of assistance, even more if most of that money is spent in western companies. The problem is, that they don’t see why, process is already being controlled.

🔥 Georgia:
🇬🇪 former president M. Saakashvili (now having 🇺🇦 citizenship) being on trial in 🇬🇪 Georgia. From the 🇬🇪 point of view – he is being accused of multiple crimes, corruption, etc. He is also feared and hated by current government. They are afraid to kill him, but also afraid to set him free, thus he is kept in bad conditions, possibly getting poisoned, not receiving adequate medical treatment. Arestovych personally would suggest to send him to third country to provide treatment, while keeping him under arrest. Current situation shows inability of government to make adequate decisions.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 01/12/2022 12:38

Looking at the above explanation of the Ukrainian military wounded and killed numbers it seems to be in response to Úrsula Von Der Leyen's foot in mouth moment of publicly declaring Ukraine to have had 100,000 KIA.

Yahoo News:
Part of her speech was posted on Twitter on the morning of Nov. 30, in which she stated, in particular, that Ukraine’s losses in the war with Russia amounted to 100,000 soldiers and 20,000 civilians.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine brought death, destruction and untold suffering. We all remember the horrors of Bucha. It is estimated that more than 20,000 civilians and 100,000 Ukrainian military personnel have died to date. Russia must pay for its heinous crimes, including the crime of aggression against a sovereign state,” the tweet read.

The speech was also published on the website of the European Commission.
However, within a few hours, the tweet was deleted and a new one was published – with a video address, from which the claim about the deaths of 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers and 20,000 civilians had been removed.

Key Takeaways

The Russian military’s efforts around Bakhmut suggest that Russian forces failed to learn from previous costly campaigns focused on operationally insignificant settlements.

Russian state nuclear company Rosenergoatom appointed a new director for the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The Kremlin continues efforts to stifle domestic dissent through an expansion of measures ostensibly aimed against “foreign agents.”

Russian opinion polling suggests that the Russian public may be growing tired of Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Russian forces continued efforts to defend against Ukrainian counteroffensive operations along the Svatove-Kreminna line.

Russia forces continued to make incremental gains around Bakhmut and to conduct offensive operations in the Avdiivka-Donetsk City area.

A Ukrainian official acknowledged that Ukrainian forces are conducting an operation on the Kinburn Spit.

Russian and Ukrainian sources indicated that Russian officials are continuing to conduct partial mobilization measures.

Russian officials’ ongoing efforts to integrate illegally annexed territories into the Russian Federation are likely very disorganized.

Russian forces have continually expended combat strength on small settlements around Bakhmut since the end of May; in the following six months, they have only secured gains on the order of a few kilometers at a time.[1] As ISW has previously observed, Russian efforts to advance on Bakhmut have resulted in the continued attrition of Russian manpower and equipment, pinning troops on relatively insignificant settlements for weeks and months at a time.[2] This pattern of operations closely resembles the previous Russian effort to take Severodonetsk and Lysychansk earlier in the war. As ISW assessed throughout June and July of this year, Ukrainian forces essentially allowed Russian troops to concentrate efforts on Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, two cities near the Luhansk Oblast border of limited operational and strategic significance, in order to capitalize on the continued degradation of Russian manpower and equipment over the course of months of grinding combat.[3] Russian troops eventually captured Lysychansk and Severodonetsk and reached the Luhansk Oblast border, but that tactical success translated to negligible operational benefit as the Russian offensive in the east then culminated. Russian efforts in this area have remained largely stalled along the lines that they reached in early July. Even if Russian troops continue to advance toward and within Bakhmut, and even if they force a controlled Ukrainian withdrawal from the city (as was the case in Lysychansk), Bakhmut itself offers them little operational benefit. The costs associated with six months of brutal, grinding, and attrition-based combat around Bakhmut far outweigh any operational advantage that the Russians can obtain from taking Bakhmut. Russian offensives around Bakhmut, on the other hand, are consuming a significant proportion of Russia’s available combat power, potentially facilitating continued Ukrainian counteroffensives elsewhere.
Russian state nuclear power company Rosatom stated that the former chief engineer of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) has become the new director of the ZNPP. Rosatom advisor Renat Karchaa announced on November 30 that Yuriy Chernichuk has become the new ZNPP director and the first deputy general director of the Joint Stock Company “Operating Organization of the ZNPP,” which is the entity that Rosatom formed on October 3 to essentially replace Ukrainian company Energoatom as the plant’s operator and to oversee the “safe operation” of the ZNPP and manage personnel activities within the plant.[4] Karchaa also noted that the entire management company of the ZNPP is formed of existing members of ZNPP staff who have signed a new employment contract.[5] Rosatom‘s direct role in appointing and overseeing ZNPP management is consistent with previous efforts to install and maintain Russian control of the ZNPP in a way that is likely intended to force the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to de facto accept Russian claims over the plant by interacting with Russian-controlled ZNPP staff.[6]
The Kremlin continues efforts to stifle domestic dissent through legislation that broadens the definition of “foreign agents” and those amenable to foreign influence. Russian media began reporting on November 23 that the Russian government approved new restrictions on the ability of those deemed “foreign agents” to post materials created by foreign-influenced sources and conduct public activities, which will enter into effect on December 1.[7] The Russian Ministry of Justice expanded the list of “individual-foreign agents” on November 27 on the basis of those individuals conducting unspecified political activities.[8] The United Kingdom Ministry of Defense (UK MoD) also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved amendments to the 2012 ”Foreign Agents Law” that extends the original definition of ”foreign agents” to anyone who is under undefined ”influence or pressure” from foreign actors.[9] The amendments also afford the Russian Ministry of Justice the purview to publish the personal details of designated foreign agents, opening them up to public harassment.[10] These measures are likely intended to crack down on increasing instances of domestic dissent about the Kremlin’s conduct of the war. By broadening the definition of those classified as foreign agents, the Kremlin can expand its weaponization of this designation to ratchet up censorship measures and exert increased control over the information space.
The Belarusian Minster of Defense made comments likely in support of ongoing information operations, and some Russian sources reframed those comments so as to place further pressure on Belarusian officials to support Russia’s war in Ukraine. Belarusian Minister of Defense Lieutenant General Viktor Khrenin stated on November 30 that the actions of bordering NATO members suggest that preparations are underway to conduct military operations in the eastern direction (i.e., against Belarus).[11] While Khrenin’s comments incorporate several possible types of military operations, Russian media and a milblogger reported his comments as saying explicitly that NATO is preparing for offensive operations in the eastern direction (which is a nonsensical accusation).[12] Khrenin likely made the comments about NATO military activities on the borders with Belarus in support of what ISW has previously assessed is an ongoing information operation aimed at fixing Ukrainian forces on the border with Belarus in response to the threat of Belarus entering the war.[13] ISW has also previously assessed that Belarus is highly unlikely to enter the war.[14] Russian sources likely framed Khrenin’s comments to be more inflammatory in order to support the information operation about Belarus entering the war but also to set more escalatory information conditions that may place more pressure on Belarusian officials to further support the Russian offensive campaign in Ukraine.
Russian opinion polling suggests that the Russian public may be tiring of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Russian opposition media outlet Meduza reported on November 30 that it had gained access to the results of an opinion poll commissioned by the Kremlin for internal use that shows that 55 percent of Russians favor peace talks with Ukraine and 25 percent favor continuing the war.[15] Russian independent polling organization Levada’s October polling shows a similar breakdown with 34 percent favoring continuing military actions in Ukraine and 57 percent favoring negotiations.[16] Internal Kremlin polling reportedly placed the percentage of Russians supporting negotiations with Ukraine at 32 percent in July and the percentage favoring the continuation of the war at 57 percent.[17] Meduza reported that the director of the Levada Center Denis Volkov stated that the share of Russians likely to support peace talks with Ukraine began to grow rapidly following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s partial mobilization decree.[18] Disruptions associated with partial mobilization and Russian setbacks on the battlefield have likely contributed to an increasing war weariness among the Russian public, as reflected in the polling.* *
