I think Julia's relationship with her mum is brilliantly observed. You can see the shadows of Julia's childhood in it. I also thought the scene with Amanda and her mum was amazing.

I really dislike the Meg character, she doesn't add anything and spoils it for me

Byfleet · 12/11/2022 20:33

I like the Meg character. I like that there’s a lot of darkness behind the noisiness and drinking but I agree that she’s the least rounded character.

TheDuchessOfMN · 12/11/2022 20:45

I really don’t like Meg either. I can’t bear people as loud as that in real life. Excellent actress though.

NewJobGoingCrazy · 12/11/2022 20:47

Hell yes!

interstatelovesong · 12/11/2022 20:49

I just finished it 😭

Hope they do a fourth series 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

@interstatelovesong Julia’s mum is a great character as well. They are all are. Motherland is true character comedy. Every single character, even the school receptionist, is very carefully drawn and brilliantly performed and they are all relatable, but have an edge. Even ‘nice’ people like Ann and Kevin, you can see how annoying their niceness is.

But it’s more than a character comedy because the storylines are great as well and they blend realism with absurdity. Then of top of that there are moments of broad, guffawing slapstick. The whole thing is both laugh out loud funny and clever at the same time.

I have no connection to anyone on the programme btw!

Great review! Spot on!

rosyroses · 12/11/2022 23:20

The casting is just brilliant. Even down to their mums which appear this series

I really hope they don’t - I think it’s run its course. Those kinds of mum relationships just don’t exist when kids go on to secondary school. I thought the first three series perfectly encapsulates the intensity of the primary school years when mums (usually) are juggling parenting and working with all the admin madness of school and negotiating relationships with other parents.

They have younger kids still in primary though.

On the whole secondary thing - I k ow they needed new storylines and I can be convinced Ivy is old enough for secondary school (actually she looks about 32 in season 3) but Manus, Darius and Charlie - no way are they 11! They all look about 6. And are much younger than Ivy. Georgie is clearly older than Manus too.

I know it’s not about the kids - and I’m pleased it’s not, Outnumbered is funny but the kids are so fucking annoying and tedious - but I think they could have had just had the obvious kids going to secondary school, the ones who don’t look like infants.

I’d love a 4th and 5th. The teen years are rarely depicted but so much comedy to be had.

Julia is misunderstood. Some things she says I hate but on the whole I love her. She's hilarious.

Is this a series that has already aired elsewhere? - I started watching the nit one and I'm sure I've seen it before.

Same! Me and DH thought we were going insane today!

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/11/2022 14:23

But it was on BBC before wasnt it. Not some obscure channel.

Kids are out so sat doen with husband fir a rare daytime TV session with this - looking forward to it all morning thinking it was new 🤣

Yes it's been on iplayer before but the Xmas episode wasn't, I paid for it on Prime!

You’re right about this, it does really depict the primary school years intensity so well. But I also agree that the teen years would be great. There could be some brilliant storylines.
Julia trying to manipulate Anne into supervising a bunch of tweens at a gig
Kevin having to clean up piles of vomit at a teen house party
etc etc

TheDuchessOfMN · 14/11/2022 21:24

One of the things I love the most about it is that although it’s about motherhood, the kids’ aren’t really featured. I don’t know how they could continue that if they were to continue it into the teen years.

Natalie Cassidy is excellent as the TA

Crunchymum · 14/11/2022 22:17

This series was on iplayer ages ago wasn't it?

Yes but the Xmas special wasn't.

The Julia character is massively over exaggerated - I love her. Also, don't forget she's the only one juggling full time work / mother hood / wife blah blah blah.

I find Julia so relatable! I cover up the level of frazzled most of the time and I definitely don't expect other people to step up and help with my dc the way she does but I completely get existing on the edge of sanity and keeping it together that she portrays whilst trying to fufil all the roles expected of her. Not all days but some feel like that. That's why she's so funny, no one wants to be that tightly strung and winging it through everything but it captures how working in a demanding job with young dc at primary school along with running a house and holding a marriage together can feel. And yes it looks like utter selfishness but I can relate to swimming so hard beneath the surface that being asked to do just one more thing feels like an absolutley ludicrous demand.

Anyone know why this has been removed from netflix?? Not sure if it's just my netflix but I was watching my way through the first two seasons again & now it's not coming up 😩
