Watched some of these last night.

The Christmas episode is epic. I especially love “Mein Craft” 😂😂

Amanda is a very underrated character, Lucy Punch is an incredible actress. Best moment of the series for me is when she’s trying to be pretend to be cool about her exH’s new GF Tamara. She says “I worked with a Tamara at Bibendum. My Tamara was a stupid fat bitchy but I’m sure your Tamara is just lovely”.

Very sad when she runs away after seeing her. Johnny is a prick.

Id 100% marry Kevin. I hope there’s another series and that him and Amanda get nice new partners.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 12/11/2022 12:58

My best friend is a real life Liz, I call her Liz all the time, she’s just as blunt and hilarious, also a single mum with a shitty exH. I’m very lucky as I suspect I’m more of a Julia 🤪

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2022 13:01

Yes Mein Craft - so, so funny
it’s so well observed

I have mixed feelings on the 3rd season, it felt very rushed.

The dates on Netflix say it is from 2020 so perhaps they were doing what they could around lockdowns.

The nit one would have been topical at the time.

Of course that also means that seasons 4 and 5 are well overdue.

TheDuchessOfMN · 12/11/2022 13:09

I had completely forgotten that it would have been filmed during Covid, that makes sense!

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/11/2022 13:52

Er was super excited to watch this. Turned on Netflix, went to episode 3 as 1 and 2 are specials. And started watching but it's from last year!?!?

Surely everyone's seen this?! Confused by this thread and a bit disappointed!

TimeForFika · 12/11/2022 13:54

I'm a mix between Anne and Julia Grin

It’s new to Netflix.

I hadn’t seen it when it was on tv last year

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2022 14:22

I had seen it but excited to watch it again on Netflix

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/11/2022 14:23

But it was on BBC before wasnt it. Not some obscure channel.

Kids are out so sat doen with husband fir a rare daytime TV session with this - looking forward to it all morning thinking it was new 🤣

mpeople · 12/11/2022 14:23

Winner!

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2022 14:32

Ah sorry @ButterflyBiscuit 😂 I think it will stand up to a rewatch though!

I’m impressed your DH is interested - mine can’t stand it and finds the characters ridiculous, especially Julia - I find them totally relatable (exaggerated of course) and hilarious!

interstatelovesong · 12/11/2022 14:33

Omg I absolutely love this show
Brilliant

Hope they do a series 4

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/11/2022 14:34

We both found it funny and moving at times.

He's got me onto "marriage " now instead. First episode and I think it must be a slow burn... Still trying to follow what's going on!

The Christmas special is probably one of the best TV comedy episodes I have ever seen (and I'm 60).

I was honestly crying with laughter at the Xmas party bedroom scene

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2022 14:34

There’s an early episode where Julia tries to drop the kids at school and forgets it’s half term, she’s then trying to persuade the caretaker to keep them at school anyway or something like that as she has to work 😂 it’s so daft but so funny and I could totally relate, I’ve never done something like that obviously but the pressures of a working parent are really well observed.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 12/11/2022 14:36

Definitely going to rewatch the Christmas special over Christmas.

“Heel of the bread”

Hope they do another one

CornishGem1975 · 12/11/2022 14:45

So...is it new or not? I thought I had seen all of these on iPlayer already.

ButterflyBiscuit · 12/11/2022 14:49

No not new 😭

CornishGem1975 · 12/11/2022 14:50

Bah. Didn't think so.

Arenanewbie · 12/11/2022 15:01

I’m the same as @BarbaraofSeville I can only see episode 1 on iplayer.

Byfleet · 12/11/2022 15:54

@interstatelovesong yes! The bedroom scene in the Christmas episode was the finest example of slapstick I have ever seen and the icing on the cake of the whole episode which also includes Julia’s husband in TK Max, Julia’s in laws and Julia’s Christmas fridge.

Someone earlier mentioned that Julia isn’t a very nice character, and she’s not, but I have personally experienced so many of the situations she is in and have felt the very same end of my tether rage. She is acting out and expressing the feelings we have all had but which we usually cover up with a veneer of serenity and smiles. Or is it just me?

Yes!!!! I TOTALLY agree re Julia

She's at the end of her tether juggling everything and her husband is a shit dad and a shit husband

I'm also not sure how I feel about her mum. I think Julia acts entitled about babysitting etc but also her mum doesn't seem to give a shit about her or her grandkids

Byfleet · 12/11/2022 18:28

@interstatelovesong Julia’s mum is a great character as well. They are all are. Motherland is true character comedy. Every single character, even the school receptionist, is very carefully drawn and brilliantly performed and they are all relatable, but have an edge. Even ‘nice’ people like Ann and Kevin, you can see how annoying their niceness is.

But it’s more than a character comedy because the storylines are great as well and they blend realism with absurdity. Then of top of that there are moments of broad, guffawing slapstick. The whole thing is both laugh out loud funny and clever at the same time.

I have no connection to anyone on the programme btw!

Excellent summation :)

I REALLY hope they do a 4th series.

Julia is, obviously, awful, but there's a kernel of every harassed mother in her (and the occasional kindness) that makes her relatable.
