How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

OP - I don't think you have said the size of your machine?

At my parents I'd do 20 loads a week haha ! But their drum is tiny and I have 4 children.

I absolutely love my hoover 14kg machines and I have 2 washers and 2 dryers stacked 😂😂😂

So prob 10 loads a week on 14kg (4 children and rugby / football clothes) and 7 beds 😂😂😂

14kg!! My drum is 5kg and that's enough to fill a clothes airer to dry them. I wouldn't have room to dry much more! I don't have a tumble dryer and I don't like tumbling clothes anyway, when I used to have one I only used it for towels, bedding and baby stuff.

Probably about 14 a week (two a day). More when doing bedding. 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 1 child. DC3 cannot last a full day at school without uniform getting yoghurt spilt down the front or coming home with muddy trousers.

Like you OP, trying to work out how to cut down on washing, especially with rising costs but it seems impossible!

FanFckingTastic · 07/11/2022 11:40

You are not going mad OP. I swear I do around eleventy-billion washes every week. Two adults, three kids, one dog plus footbball kits, rugby kits, gym gear, muddy clothes from the stables, uniforms, smelly PE kits, stinky towels... and now that it's winter everything worn outside gets covered in mud and sludge so you have to wash it, rather than insist it gets worn again. I reckon I'm also doing around 15 washes a week.

Yes, of course that's a lot for 4 people! I don't think we did that much even when we were 5 with 2 in washable nappies.

Currently, I wash my own laundry once a week or so, as do each of the other members of the house (the 2 teens may be nearer fortnightly), and we do maybe 2 other loads for towels and sheets or coats that need a periodic wash. So about 4-6 loads a week for a household of 4.

We shifted to each person having a load as with 3 girls it was hard to sort out their clothes and that was our bottleneck. Getting rid of sorting fixed it, and the kids have done their own washing since about 6-8 years old (adults dealt with hanging it to dry and putting away until they were about 12).

bigfamilygrowingupfast · 07/11/2022 11:42

Woah!! I probably do 5 and I thought that was excessive 🤣

Topgub · 07/11/2022 11:46

@user1469095927

Sponge clean spills?

Stop washing bedding weekly

HermioneKipper · 07/11/2022 11:56

Once a day for main stuff. Usually a few in the evenings of extra PE kit/gym gear. Weekend for bedding x2. Load for towels

So 11 or 12 probably.

Family of 5 (Filthy twin toddlers adding to this)

KillingLoneliness · 07/11/2022 11:58

Why so much!? We are a family of 4, I do 4-7 loads week.

mydogisthebest · 07/11/2022 12:00

Topgub · 07/11/2022 11:21

Thats absolutely ludicrous abd has to be a wind up.

No wonder the planet is fucked.

Stop washing clean clothes!

It's awful isn't it.

I wonder how many times the OP and her family wear an item of clothing before they absolutely have to wash it?

Underwear has to be changed every day but other clothes don't unless they get something on them.

Also should wait until you have a machine load before washing not wash a couple of items each time

mincen · 07/11/2022 12:00

Two adults, one teen and a ten year old. I'd say I probably do 6 loads most weeks.

Livpool · 07/11/2022 12:07

2 adult and a 7 year old here - we do 6-7!

You do loads OP - I wouldn't be Abel to dry that much

dottypencilcase · 07/11/2022 12:20

What?! 14-18 washes?! Are you elephants? Family of 4 here. Mucky preschoolers and an even muckier husband and we do 4 loads a week.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 07/11/2022 12:21

People never take into account.

Machine capacity some are as small as 6kg especially old machines so of course that'll be more loads

Jobs. Dh job is fithy his clothes get washed daily. Cannot go in with others.

The size of the clothes if a. Family has a mens xxl or ladies size 26. Then of course less fits in the machine than a mens M or ladies 14. = more wash loads.

School uniform colors.
Dds is red. So them red itens are the only red items in the house. So 5 cardigans is less than half a load but still is a machine cycle.

Bedding a thick super king set may not necessarily get the sheet in the machine too with it meaning more than 1 load . But a standard double would fit a sheet in too

Kids that have night accidents. Dsc does. Every night pretty much and managed to get the actual duvet wet, so without a doubt that's 1 load for the duvet. 1 load for the rubber sheet as has a brushed cotton top, sheet and duvet cover.
Often can be the pillow too! So that's 2 loads a day BEFORE any other laundry.

Lucky i don't mind washing to be fair. Its not an effort

maddiemookins16mum · 07/11/2022 12:25

Our rule of thumb is if we were single/living alone, I’d probably be doing more than one load per week (so one clothes, one bedding/towels) just for one person, so it sort of makes sense that if there are 4 (almost all adults - DD is 17), then that averages at 8 loads.

Theoldwoman · 07/11/2022 12:35

4 adults, 1 dog and 1 cat.

I do 2-3 loads every day.

Magssss · 07/11/2022 12:38

2 adults, 4 sons - I think about 8-10 washes but the boys are small at the moment so the clothes are small too…ask me again in 10 years 😅

DoubleShotEspresso · 07/11/2022 12:38

ohthehorrorthehorror · 07/11/2022 10:39

@DoubleShotEspresso 20 loads a week for two adults and a child? That's mind-boggling!
We are two retired adults and probably do five a week, maximum. DC sometimes bring their washing home so that's another load. But I've never done 20 loads a week even when DC were playing sports multiple times a week.

I'm on my third load today I don't understand where it all comes from some days but 💁‍♀️
We do seem to do more than ever she but I've no idea why

Floomobal · 07/11/2022 12:39

3 loads per week for 2 adults and a baby.

Eleusa · 07/11/2022 12:41

A million? Feels like it anyway.

All our bedding and towels take 5 washes a week. Then probably 1 or 2 more per day- 2 teen DC who do sports most days, 2 adults. It's so much and I don't know how to reduce it- I already wear things for multiple days.

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 07/11/2022 12:41

About 10 if washing bedsheets which I change every couple of weeks , otherwise About 8
3 adults

Athenen0ctua · 07/11/2022 12:44

One adult, one teen. Two washes, one clothes one towels/bedding.

Lovegossip · 07/11/2022 12:49

2 adults so all washing gets done at the weekend maybe 3 loads at the most

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 07/11/2022 12:56

Dds is red. So them red itens are the only red items in the house. So 5 cardigans is less than half a load but still is a machine cycle.

Why do they need to go on their own though? Could they not go in a dark wash with eg navy, grey, black etc?

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 12:58

I have a 8kg washing machine. Our daily clothes for all of us plus pyjamas plus tea towels etc is 1 load a day sometimes 2 if baby has had a few sets of clothes on or a coat needs to go in . Two loads a week for towels and 1 for bedding. 1 for the throws on the sofa.

OP posts:
Topgub · 07/11/2022 13:00

Why the fuck are you washing coats and sofa cushions?

Why are you washing all clothes and pjs daily?
