How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

Same as op. We seem to be really high energy users and it's so frustrating.
Dishwasher twice a day
Hob used four times a day
Dh uses the oven for like four sausages
I can't stand it. And yes, I am now a bit fun moaning woman who is ranting all the time.

I have a 8kg washing machine. Our daily clothes for all of us plus pyjamas plus tea towels etc is 1 load a day sometimes 2 if baby has had a few sets of clothes on or a coat needs to go in . Two loads a week for towels and 1 for bedding. 1 for the throws on the sofa.

You don't need to wash all of your clothes, pyjamas and towels every single day.

Use your common sense about whether something actually needs washing.

3-4 loads a week for us and we aren't smelly/ unhygienic.

GoldenPineapple88 · 07/11/2022 13:02

I do at least 15 a week. Often 3 a day.

Sports kits, swimmers, rugby and work clothes basically need to go in after one wear unfortunately. I think it's entirely dependant on the sorts of activities you do. A family of non-sporty people who work in an office etc probably wouldn't have half the amount of washing we have for example.

2 adults and a toddler here and we probably have 9-10 loads per week I would say

TheFTrain · 07/11/2022 13:06

2 adults and 1 teenager with lots of sportswear. I'd say we do about 10 washes a week on average. We have a small washing machine though.

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 13:07

@Topgub I’m washing coats and sofa throws because they are dirty!

It's awful isn't it.

I wonder how many times the OP and her family wear an item of clothing before they absolutely have to wash it?

Underwear has to be changed every day but other clothes don't unless they get something on them.

Also should wait until you have a machine load before washing not wash a couple of items each time

Yep. Over-washed clothes also wear out more quickly and add even more to the climate issues and money you are spending on replacing worn out clothes.

People don't realise that jeans barely ever need to be washed. My husband does his about twice a year.

You can use a single towel for 1-2 weeks, just hang it to dry and reuse it. You're only drying yourself when you're clean anyway!

Coats hardly ever need washing unless they get mucky/ something spilled on them.

Cushion covers/ curtains - Maybe once a year if you care that much? Haven't done ours for about 2 years, they don't smell and aren't visibly dirty.

All of this and guess what, we have a lovely clean house and people literally comment about how OCD we are with cleanliness!

It's ridiculous how wasteful people are with unnecessary washing. We are obsessed with everything being sterile, it does not need to be.

DoubleShotEspresso · 07/11/2022 13:09

In terms of drum capacity what is big or small please? Just trying to fathom our volume here!

Deadringer · 07/11/2022 13:10

We are a family of 7, 5 adults and 2 teens and I probably average about 7 washes a week. It helps that the dc get into their pjs when they get home. Aside from underwear clothes are washed if whiffy or dirty, and bedclothes are done about fortnightly, sometimes less.

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 13:10

How are coats dirty? Erm little one falls over on daily walks and gets mud on himself.

sofa throws get drool from toddler/dog hair etc

IclimbedSnowdon · 07/11/2022 13:11

2 adult household here.
1 light wash
1 dark wash
Towels
Microfiber cleaning cloths
So it's four for me, although this time of year I don't have many lights so that is usually a quick half load wash, as are the cleaning cloths.

Topgub · 07/11/2022 13:12

Then wipe them down?

mistymor · 07/11/2022 13:13

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 13:09

@mistymor i only wash towels twice a week not every day

You really shouldn't need to do 2 towel washes a week for your household size.

Unless you are all constantly exercising and using a load of gym towels or something.

You asked if you're doing too much washing.

The answer is yes, you are.

Do what you see fit with the responses.

Dds is red. So them red itens are the only red items in the house. So 5 cardigans is less than half a load but still is a machine cycle.

Why do they need to go on their own though? Could they not go in a dark wash with eg navy, grey, black etc?

Because i dont. Because i dont want them to look 'off' like many of the kids jumpers

MrsWarboysHandGrenade · 07/11/2022 13:18

Two adults, two primary aged DC. About 9-10 a week.

Wishawisha · 07/11/2022 13:19

@WeeblesWibbleWobble do you still really find that red school uniform leaks every wash?
I have 2 DC in bright red school uniform. I washed it separately for the first 2 washes and now it’s not brand new it goes in with everything - white polo shirts, everything.
Obviously their white polo shirts have small stains on from their lunches or from their art lessons (felt tip pen etc) - so absolutely nothing to do with me - but I don’t find the white is any less bright not DH’s white shirts. The red doesn’t leak now they’re not new.

School uniform needs washing after each wear 90% of the time unfortunately but the only other thing I would wash after every use is DH’s gym kit- he goes every day. It still doesn’t come close to being a wash every day. My last was was Saturday morning and I’ll put a new one on later. I put everything in the drum this morning but it’s only about two thirds full so I won’t put it on obviously.

OP how often are you washing sofa throws?!

Frazzled2207 · 07/11/2022 13:20

Topgub · 07/11/2022 13:00

Why the fuck are you washing coats and sofa cushions?

Why are you washing all clothes and pjs daily?

This.
we’d all have the machine on twice a day if we were washing ALL clothes after one wear. Stop doing this and your usage will more than halve.

FourChimneys · 07/11/2022 13:22

Two adults, four washes.

Bedding, 60 degrees
Towels and pants, 90 degrees
Light clothes, 30 degrees
Dark clothes, 30 degrees

Notplayingball · 07/11/2022 13:22

Roughly 10. Two adults, four DC.

Newpuppymummy · 07/11/2022 13:09

@mistymor i only wash towels twice a week not every day

Massive overkill. You only use towels on clean skin surely!

coffeepleeease · 07/11/2022 13:24

1 adult, 1 child, I do 5 a week

WombatChocolate · 07/11/2022 13:24

3 adults here at the moment.
3 washes 1 week, then 3/4 the next week. 7kg machine.

Purposely cutting down for environmental and cost reasons. Towels washed weekly and bedding every 2 weeks. Will be look8mg to reduce bedding laundry to 3 weekly over winter months and will do more often again in summer.

Everything is washed on mixed 40 degree load except the bedding wash on 60.

I wear dresses to work and wear them 2 or 3 times between washing. The work trousers worn by family members are worn 3 or 4 times. In winter, shirts often worn twice (with something underneath them) but daily wash in summer. Jumpers and sweatshirts which have something else under them are worn at least 3 times unless one thing spilt down them. Jeans - have increased to wearing 6 times from 3/4.

The young adult is still prone to put items worn once in the laundry basket. These are generally thrown back into their room for another wear. Unfortunately, they tend to allow their clean laundry to get muddled with dirty laundry. I could throw lots of it back in multiple times and they would never know.

Of course underwear and socks washed daily. Things like coats - almost never.
