How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

Surely a lot depends on lifestyle, size of washing machine drum etc?

We're 2 adults (fairly sporty), 2 teens (not at all sporty).

3-4 darks per week
2 lights per week
2 towels per week
2 bedding fortnightly

spottygymbag · 07/11/2022 11:14

2 adults and 2 DC and we do about 9 or 10 each week. Either a light or dark each day depending on how much of either. A mid week load of sports towels and face cloths, 2x bedding loads, and one large load of towels, bath mats and face cloths at the weekend. Sporty family and the gym/cycling/ running/swimming gear can't be left for long or it festers.
If we had a bigger machine then I could do the bedding all in one but it won't fit in the machine so had to be split.

LiftyLift · 07/11/2022 11:14

To those doing quick loads, it’s worth checking your machine manual. My quick wash cycles use loads more water and electricity to compensate for the fast cycle so it’s much more expensive to wash that way. For my machine longer cycles use less electricity and less water.

How are people drying 15-20 loads of washing? I struggle drying 3-5 loads of washing in winter.

Jellycatspyjamas · 07/11/2022 11:15

One adult and two primary aged children, I do 5 washes a week. Bedding, towels, lights and darks and there’s usually an extra something that needs a quick wash. I’d be going demented with 18 washes a week.

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 07/11/2022 11:16

On average, one a day.
But it it dependant on being able to get it all dry.
I wouldn't be able to reliably dry much more than a load a day over the winter - although did 3 loads on Sunday as it was dry and breezy.

Wizenedolehag · 07/11/2022 11:16

on average a wash each day plus 2 for bedding and 1 for towels

Oh, and that's 2 adults, a teen and a tween.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 07/11/2022 11:17

7-8 but they're not filling the drum.
I separate out whites, delicates (I wear a lot of knits, plus bras for 3 and quite a few other bits), hotter wash for towels/bedding. Then 3-4 standard washes.

I don't have a tumble drier, and live in an old, damp-retaining house. If I did fewer bigger loads nothing would dry.

I am trying to wash more at 20-30, and have been experimenting with wearing clothes more before washing them. The teens are awful for wearing a skirt once for 6 hours between school and bed and then putting in the wash, and I'm trying hard to catch them before the garments spend so long with the other dirty laundry that they then do need a wash.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 07/11/2022 11:17

that's for 2 adults, 2 teens

carefulcalculator · 07/11/2022 11:18

What the heck? That is masses, what are you washing?

We do average of six: three clothes, one sheets, one towels, one kitchen linens.

maddiemookins16mum · 07/11/2022 11:19

3 adults, 1 teen, 2 cats.
a load per person - clothing
a load per person of bedding towels
one for the cats.
one misc (tea towels, table linen etc).
10 in total max - sometimes less if I’m a clarty beggar and don’t do the bedding weekly (more common in the winter).

20viona · 07/11/2022 11:19

That is a bonkers amount OP!
I do about 4-5 a week that's 2 adults a toddler and a newborn.

Topgub · 07/11/2022 11:21

Thats absolutely ludicrous abd has to be a wind up.

No wonder the planet is fucked.

Stop washing clean clothes!

tunnocksreturns2019 · 07/11/2022 11:22

6 - (wash three times a week, darks and lights). 7 or 8 if it’s a towel/bedlinen washing week (fortnightly if I’m coping haha - so right now, less…). One adult, two DC, one with sensory issues that mean he has more washing than the average

Ilovechoc12 · 07/11/2022 11:24

OP - I don't think you have said the size of your machine?

At my parents I'd do 20 loads a week haha ! But their drum is tiny and I have 4 children.

I absolutely love my hoover 14kg machines and I have 2 washers and 2 dryers stacked 😂😂😂

So prob 10 loads a week on 14kg (4 children and rugby / football clothes) and 7 beds 😂😂😂

JadeSeahorse · 07/11/2022 11:28

2 adults only - although our disabled adult DD is a devil for sending things home for me to wash rather than using her own washing machine 😂 - 6/7 per week.

Xiaoxiong · 07/11/2022 11:29

That is a bonkers amount. We are a family of 4, DCs are 9 and 11 and we do 6 or 7 loads a week. We change bedding and towels once a week, and have a lot of hand me down school uniform so can just run one load of the week's uniform and one load of sports kit on the weekend. We also have an overhead airer in a room with a dehumidifier, most things are dry by morning if I hang out in the evening, even towels and duvet covers.

When I had 2 babies in cloth nappies I did do 2 extra loads a week but it doesn't sound like that's your situation!

IntrovertedPenguin · 07/11/2022 11:30

9 a week.

1 a day of clothes. Then two washes a week for bedding. (Wash mine and DH separately to the kids.)

Works well for me. I couldn't be doing 2-3 loads in one day.

AutumnOcean · 07/11/2022 11:30

3-4 x clothes, 1 x towels, 1 x bedding. 2 adults, 1 toddler and 1 baby.

tealandteal · 07/11/2022 11:31

That seems a lot, how do you dry it all? I do one load every 2 days for 2 adults, a 5 year old and a 4 month old. At the weekend I do an additional whites wash for school shirts but it’s small as we don’t have much white stuff.

HalfWower · 07/11/2022 11:31

Two adults, 2 labradors.

I wash less in the winter (not as disgusting as it sounds I promise, because I can't be faffed with wet washing everywhere all the time)

I think for me and my husband, 2 loads a week. For dog towels, blankets etc 2 a week too. I limit the tumble dryer to once a week for 30 minutes just for dog stuff as it gets the hair out.

My friend and his wife and 3 kids only ever wear things once before washing, including JEANS. They also wash all their trainers once a week. We had a heated debate about this, absolutely outrageous! Can only conclude they must be sweaty smelly bastards.

Roundaboot · 07/11/2022 11:36

I aim for a load a day to keep on top of things. I might skip a day, or do an extra load if the weather is particularly good for drying but on average I'd say 6-7 loads a week. We're a household of 2 adults and one sporty teenager.
I agree with others that it's the drying that's the pain point, especially in winter. My heated airer is on constantly at the moment. I miss the summer days when you can hang a load out at breakfast and it's dry by teatime!

Minniem2020 · 07/11/2022 11:36

That seems like a lot. We're a family of 2 adults, a teenage girl who likes to wear things for an hour then put them in the wash basket, a 4 year old and a 6 month old baby. The most I would ever do in a week would be 8-9.
