How many loads of washing do you do a week

Boring I know but I’m just trying to figure out if I’m doing an excessive amount and how to cut down.

One adult, two teenagers and a one-year-old. I would say I do around 14-18 washes a week. Normal?

Two to three. Just me and teen daughter.
But when my husband was alive and had baby, toddler and my teenage stepson it was about five/six loads a week.

MavisChunch29 · 07/11/2022 10:33

Around ten to twelve - for three adults and two teenagers.

LadyHelenaJustina · 07/11/2022 10:34

8-9 probably. Mostly at the weekends.

2 adults, 4 teens.

2 adults, 2 teen DC, cat and dog. I do probably

3 x darks
2 x lights
1 x towels
2 x bedding
1 x dog towels at the moment as weather is so awful!

occasional extra wash of pet bedding or if everyone got filthy and wet on a dog walk

HeatwaveToNightshade · 07/11/2022 10:37

Roughly one a day here, with the odd extra one from time to time. Two adults, a 14yo and a 10yo.

ohthehorrorthehorror · 07/11/2022 10:39

@DoubleShotEspresso 20 loads a week for two adults and a child? That's mind-boggling!
We are two retired adults and probably do five a week, maximum. DC sometimes bring their washing home so that's another load. But I've never done 20 loads a week even when DC were playing sports multiple times a week.

Ineedwinenow · 07/11/2022 10:40

Two adults here and it’s one wash a week but sometimes two if I have enough lights! ( I only wash when I have full loads, I never do half loads)

We also have the biggest drum size we could find though so I didn’t have to keep doing multiple loads

Wishawisha · 07/11/2022 10:40

2 adults, 2 kids - about 3-4 a week.

When youngest was in cloth nappies it was probably 4 maybe 5.

BatCheeseIsFine · 07/11/2022 10:44

Approx 1 a day, sometimes more. It's me and 2 teens, but also an old and vomity cat which sometimes causes extra washing.

I have cut down though on the cycle length and the amount of detergent. I heard and interview with some washing guru person who said you can use less and do shorter washes and it's just as good, plus of course cheaper, better for the environment and better for your clothes. I've found no difference in how clean they are using the 30 minute, 30° quick cycle and half the detergent. I just do a hot wash when I do the sheets etc, which keeps the washing machine disinfected.

ElfDragon · 07/11/2022 10:45

I do 8-10 a week. There’s me, 2 older teens and a preteen.

I do a wash 6 days a week with what we have worn (uniforms, sports kit, general clothes), which is a full load each time, then the extra 2 or 3 washes are bedding/towels as needed.

slapmyarseandcallmemary · 07/11/2022 10:47

2 adults, a school age child, nursery age child and 7 month old. Easily do 10 a week, if not more.

TenoringBehind · 07/11/2022 10:48

10

2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs.

lots of gardening, sport, muddy walks

A580Hojas · 07/11/2022 10:48

Probably averages at 6.

3 adults.

mydogisthebest · 07/11/2022 10:49

That's a ridiculous amount. Do you wait until you have a full load to wash? What on earth are you washing every day or even twice a day?

Me and DH and we do 4 loads one week - darks, lights, bedding, towels and 5 the next when we wash the dog beds (2 dogs).

No wonder some people have such high electric bills, not to mention all the water being used.

AnyRandomName · 07/11/2022 10:51

Probably about 5 on an average week.

2 DC, 2 adults and 3 Guinea pigs with washable cage liners

mansviewpoint · 07/11/2022 10:57

1 load per person each week (9kg machine) + 1 load of bedding and towels. (Beds changed every fortnight).

Season0fTheWitch · 07/11/2022 11:00

1-2 loads a day, usually more at the weekend when I do bedding and towels. Me, DH, a 4yo, 2yo and 2mo so we have a lot of mucky clothes. And DH wears a suit to work every day so a fair bit of dry cleaning too.

BlackInk · 07/11/2022 11:04

Wow, what are you washing OP?? Are they all full loads?
Family of 4 here too and I do a wash pretty much every day – so 6 or 7 a week – and that feels like too much!
Most days it's a dark wash, with 1 x light wash and 1 x white wash. We wash by colour only, same temp/setting for everything. Things like towels, bedding, coats are added in ad hock when they need doing depending on their colour.
We don't have a tumble drier and can only get one load a day dry indoors, and that's using a dehumidifier.

Sparklywolf · 07/11/2022 11:05

I have 3 sets of work uniform and work 5 shifts a week so do a minimum of 2 x whites and 2 x darks.

No kids but look after my doubly incontinent Mum so I wash her bedding and towels separately to mine, so that's another 2 x towels and 2 x bedding.

At least every other night I also have to do an intensive wash of her trousers/sling/chair cushion cover and blanket as well.

So a minimum of 11 washes a week, up to 15 in a bad week I guess?

But almost nothing gets tumble dried, and as the heating is on anyway it all dries pretty fast on airers/radiators

InvincibleInvisibility · 07/11/2022 11:06

14 a week (8kg drum). 2 adults, 2 children

Live in a hot, humid country. Nothing can be worn more than once including shorts and trousers (poor DS1 has to wear trousers for school uniform).

Sheets need changing weekly
Towels - use loads (showers, pool, beach)
Sports gear - 1 wear only - between us we have 12-14 sports sessions a week

orbitalcrisis · 07/11/2022 11:07

Even when I had two in terry nappies I didn't do that many loads!

Fizbosshoes · 07/11/2022 11:08

2 teens and 2 adults (and 2 cats but they barely generate washing)
I probably do 3-5 loads of washing a week.
My standards are probably lower than the average MN. The quickest cycle on my washing machine is 30 min, but I rarely use that.

Shiningsilverargent · 07/11/2022 11:08

I adult, three teens. I would say on average, one a day. Some days I might miss but at the weekends I would end up doing 2 on a Sunday, or potentially more.

Mañanarama · 07/11/2022 11:11

15-18, that’s excessive!!

I’ve always done about 5 but trying to cut that to 4 or even 3 as drying is going to be a pain this winter. 2 adults, 2 teens.

All the pants and socks plus anything else that can be tumbled, once a week.

Towels get chucked in with any wash, as and when needed. Same with bedding.

One white wash per week on a hotter wash - school shirts, bathmat, tea towels etc. Everything else is darks done over a couple of washes.

I do not understand how on earth you’re doing 2-3 washes every day!!

upfucked · 07/11/2022 11:14

7/8 two adults, 2 messy young children (luckily the youngest rarely has ‘wee accidents’ now) and a lot of swimming. Some where between 7 and 10 loads depending on what the week bring eg swimming, sofa covers, wee accidents.
