@Prokupatuscrakedatus I never knew that 8th of March is an official holiday in Berlin, go Berliners!

Good that you got to see your brother. Do you see each other frequently?

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/03/2023 15:39

@cassiatwenty

He works near Hamburg and does night shifts in a care home, so he has batches of free time and then he comes here to see his partner and me. We usually look for nice places to eat.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/03/2023 15:52

I was proud to discover the meaning of the colours in the dresses of the staff in hospital, so proud that I made a list:

light blue - cleaning / desinfection
darker blue - carers from Bufris to qualified carer (Pflegefachkraft) (beautiful neutral term)
red or dark blue - nurses from Azubis to fully qualified and specializd
white - Ärzte (doctors need a phd to be called doctors)
light green - physio
yellow - volunteers (take patients on walks, help them to the bistro etc)
metall worker's blue in scrubs - technical personel

Azubi = learning to be carers or nurses in the dual system usually for 3 years with exams at the end
Bufri = Bundesfreiwillige - volunteering for a year to see if they can do it
There is one on my ward, who is defintely good for the job.

Another fun fact:
cleaners and "doctors" - formal adress + surname
carers and nurses - formal adress and first name

Ooh I love learning this stuff about Berlin/Germany Prokupatuscrakedatus. I'm way overdue to visit. I planned a trip that was cancelled because of Covid. I was going to bring the whole family but I think it'll end up just being me and DH.

Me too

@Prokupatuscrakedatus Vielen dank for teaching us about your country and its language 😊

Prok, that's fascinating about the color coding of uniforms in German hospitals. The only thing we do that's similar is for volunteers. They're called candy stripers because of their uniforms' red and white stripes, which look like Christmas candy canes.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hospital_volunteer

I've just read about the -15c temperatures in the UK and the snow you are expecting. It's cold and windy here too. This winter seems to have been saving everything for the final act of the play.

Our shower drain is backing up. Not badly, I was able to get most of my shower in before it started this morning. This usually happens when DD and her very long hair are home. We have a bloke who does nothing but clear drains, and DH was able to book him for later today, so hopefully that will get it sorted.

OP posts:
Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/03/2023 20:45

miss I know that problem. DH has curly hair down to her waist and DH lets his hair (black with a wave) grow in winter (envious me - never).

I have put an extra seeve in and everybody cleans the drain after each shower. But every couple of weeks I have to get the spiral out and go to work.

Lemonsandlemonade · 08/03/2023 21:54

So interesting about the uniforms Prok. Miss C the Uk had similar but it can change slightly depending on the NHS trust.

Uniform Example 1Uniform Example 2

The term candy striper reminds me of (usually rubbish) American films.

we have snow here, I’m hoping for a snow day so I don’t have to risk going to work.

Lemonsandlemonade · 08/03/2023 21:55

Prok how does your DD manage with such long curly hair ? I keep mine short as I couldn’t manage.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 08/03/2023 22:09

Lemon She only needs to wash it once a week using all sorts of products. The hair dries overnight and next morning she shakes it out and we find out the result. 😀She usually wears it up.
She's at the moment looking for a hairdresser who can handle hair that is straight in places, and waevy, and curly, and very curly.

I wonder what my hair will look like if it grows back. After my first chemo for BC twenty years ago it grew back in a different colour and much stronger.

halfpasteleven · 08/03/2023 22:10

Miss I love that description! We are expecting snow tonight/tomorrow. I am glad I got some extra firewood on Monday and grateful that I can afford to so this.

Silkierabbit · 08/03/2023 22:50

We have had snow here today and finished another overnight visit for DS. Its 10.50pm and Floof is already banging cupboards and poking feet for breakfast. 🙀He's very trilly

Silkierabbit · 09/03/2023 00:58

Floof

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 24: Calmly through the day
IWanderedLonely · 09/03/2023 06:59

We've had an inch of snow overnight, more forecast for today. I love it when it's new and still white.
DH made rocky road for yesterday's pudding, he surprised me with my own little one with cherries, dried peel and sultanas instead of marshmallows. He's not at all romantic, but is thoughtful sometimes.

Lemonsandlemonade · 09/03/2023 07:36

Snow day here ⛄️ for me and my DS. No work for me 😊. So happy not to have to make the journey.

Prok yes a good hairdresser who understands curly hair is so important. I have found one now after numerous failed attempts.

Once I went to a hairdresser who told me I didn’t have curly hair ( despite me explaining I did ) to be shocked when she cut it ( when I brush it it does go straight with slight wave ) and it was curly. It was so badly done I never went back.

one of the lads I worked with once after chemo had very very light yellow hair after being incredibly dark.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 09/03/2023 08:02

Floof is such a lovely cat!

Lemon DD once came from a hairdresser looking like a pyramid!
There are 5 specialized haidressers on her shortlist. When she has finished all her assignments she'll make an appointment.

Light yellow hair - my skintone is bluish-white, I'd melt into my white walls and never be seen again.😀

HildaTablet · 09/03/2023 08:59

I’m away for work and it’s snowing right now. I just hope I’ll be able to get home and that the trains won’t be cancelled.

MissC, I used to love the Sue Barton nurse books when I was a child, they always had great descriptions of uniforms. I found out only recently that Helen Dore Boylston, who wrote them, was a great friend of the Wilder family, of Little House on the Prairie fame, as she was a bosom buddy of Rose Wilder Lane, Laura’s daughter (though Rose treated her appallingly, it seems).

Lemonsandlemonade · 09/03/2023 13:07

Your description of your DDs hair Prok made me chuckle.

Silkie what I can’t get is at tree r all your LA have put your DS through they still can’t sort and pay for the correct sort of provision for your DS.

cassiatwenty · 09/03/2023 17:02

Hello @Prokupatuscrakedatus

Sorry I meant to ask you if you might be able to recommend some films auf Deutsch or (romantic💗 ) soap operas on Youtube (or elsewhere) or maybe just some good pop music.

I would like to learn your language and hear how people speak for real (hence I asked for soap operas), I would appreciate it if you had any suggestions. If not, that's okay, too. I want to learn your language 😋

HelenaJustina · 09/03/2023 17:44

I’m another curly-haired person. Had my first cut with a curly hair specialist last year and it’s the first time I haven’t come straight from a hairdresser and immediately re washed and styled my hair. The cut has kept it looking great for ages too. It was expensive but she said she only needs to do it every six months, so works out the same if not cheaper.

mathanxiety · 10/03/2023 02:31

I have curly hair too, and have given up on finding anyone who can cut it right. I do it myself. For washing, I use just conditioner followed by diluted gel (the 'curly girl' method) and I never brush or comb it. I would lose a brush in it, tbh. DD4 once playfully ran her hand through it and broke a nail.

Prok if you have any recommendations for German music or TV, etc, I'd love to see them. Two of my DDs are currently doing German on Duolingo and have got to the point where they're ready to test their progress.

Silkies Mr Floof is absolutely magnificent. That tail!! Hoping DS' discharge will proceed with no hiccups.

We are expecting either rain, sleet, or snow tonight. The weather forecasters have given up on accuracy. I will know when I get up whether I'll need to clear the car.

DD3 bought a graduation dress in beigy-pink chiffon yesterday. She returned a pair of trousers to H&M and spotted the dress in the clearance section. Quite a painless experience.

IWanderedLonely · 10/03/2023 14:20

Reasonable snowfall here overnight. The sun's out now but it's due to freeze overnight tonight, so tomorrow will be interesting.

I've spent an hour trying to get some photos off Google photos onto the Boots photo app. Got them there now, but too fed up to sort them out (I'm making a photo book of last year's campervan trips)
Floor is gorgeous, Silkie & for the record I have straight hair & spent a fortune on perms in the 80s and 90s

Come and tell me your dull and unexciting news 24: Calmly through the day
MissConductUS · 10/03/2023 21:17

Silkie, I hope Mr. Floof stops growing at some point or he will eat you out of house and home. We just took our 12 year old ginger boy in for his 6 month exam and the vet said that his test results are fabulous for a cat his age.

I have straight hair and have always been a bit jealous of those with curly hair.

Iwandered, that's quite an impressive snowfall. How much is it? It looks to be at least eight inches.

My beloved Miele washing machine seems to be developing a fault. We sometimes get an error that we think relates to it not draining properly. When we open up the trap that catches coins and other small objects a lot of water comes out. DH has booked a repair person on Miele's website for next Wednesday, so one of us will have to WFH that day. Let's hope it soldiers on until then. I have a lot of laundry to do on the weekends.

OP posts:
Acornsandleaves · 11/03/2023 00:25

I'm rejoining after a very long time, hope that's ok!

We've had 11 inches of snow today (in Yorkshire). Schools were closed and the kids enjoyed sledging, we haven't had such deep snow for a long time -although I'm sure it's nothing to some of you in other countries!

MissConduct I hope your washing machine survives until Wednesday and is easily fixed. Our dishwasher broke this evening, it's been unreliable for a while so it's time for a new one

MissConductUS · 11/03/2023 00:48

Of course it's okay, @Acornsandleaves. It's lovely that you've rejoined us.

11 inches is a respectable snowfall. Is Yorkshire equipped to plow that much snow in a timely manner? Winters, where I am in New York, can be quite snowy. For a while, we were averaging 50 or so inches a season, but it's been less in the last few years.

I hope the Miele is fixable. This one is about ten years old, which isn't much for a Miele. They are really expensive in the US, probably due to import duties, but I've never owned a washing machine that touched it for great cleaning and reliability. I'm almost afraid to see what a new one would cost.

It's raining tonight, but forecast to change to snow early Saturday morning. I hope I can get out to do the shopping all right.
