I've started a new one. Please join us and share the boring and mundane things happening in your world. It will be calming for all.

Here is the link to the prior thread:

Apologies that the prior thread filled up before I could create this one. Hopefully everyone will find it. Lurkers are of course welcome to unlurk.

That’s great math what do you think will influence her decision about where to study?

MissConductUS · 03/02/2023 11:45

You're right, Math, it's moving in today. We're expecting overnight lows of 2F/-17C. Sunday will be warmer. The reservoir was just icing over a bit yesterday. I'm sure they'll be much more ice shortly. Well done to your daughter on the admission!

A colleague announced that she's leaving in a week or two to take another job, so it's been a bit frantic planning for her absence and starting the mountains of paperwork require to replace her.

Helena it may come down to which one offers more financial aid, even though the second offer is from a university in the Washington, DC area where two older DDs live, and where she herself spent two years between her freshman and sophomore years doing two internships.

She has got through her undergrad degree (almost) with a very small loan amount and there won't be the same financial aid available for postgrad. I think she's going to baulk at the amount she'll need to take out and will need a good deal of hand holding. I'll see if there are figures available comparing employability and graduate salary bands for the two schools so she'll get an idea of the lifestyle she'll be able to afford while still paying off her loans, assuming she graduates. Overall, as a masters it's worth the financial investment as she'll end up with strong data crunching, management, and cross-community communication skills.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 03/02/2023 17:30

I've told my college-age kids that if they want to do a Masters there won't be any financial aid coming from us, and that they should think hard before they take out a lot of debt for a Masters.

DD1 is probably going to work when she graduates, while looking for a PhD, but there's not much need for a Masters in her field.

DD2 is in a field where she'll probably need a Masters to find work, so she's looking at some debt, and then still probably being somewhat low-paid. I've told her she's welcome to come and live at home while she repays loans.

Big decisions for them! Good luck to your daughter Math.

Lemonsandlemonade · 03/02/2023 22:06

Well done to your DD Math.

MissC wow that’s cold.

Had some potentially bad news today my DM may well have cancer she has markers in stool sample and bloods. We will known in two weeks.

sproutsandparsnips · 03/02/2023 22:30

Hope your DM is ok Lemons.
I am lucky that my MSc was funded by work. I had to do everything except the study day (clinical practice and assignments etc) in my own time but managed it.

Deathraystare · 04/02/2023 06:53

@Lemonsandlemonade

That is worrying news about your DM. I found out my DM had it when I stayed there, went to use the toilet and it was filled with blood. She had some explaining to do.

@mathanxiety

Congrats to your Dd.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 04/02/2023 07:10

Lemons and Deathraystare, I'm sorry to hear you both have worrying health situations with your mums. Strength to you. 🌹

Deathraystare · 04/02/2023 08:16

@Mumtobabyhavoc

Thanks but mine has passed.

I won't talk about Thursday which would have been exciting anyway but involed an incident at work

Still work _ Friday. For some reason I got up late and could not find my glasses. Got to work one hour later.

Unfortunately being a receptionist a vast amount of my time means looking up telephone numbers in a book. I actually had to call out to passing staff what the number was a few times not helped by a guy mending lights in the reception area and then our lights went off!!!

I went to use the printer but because I could not see the number pad well euckily I found my glasses when I got hobmeough and tried to do it fro m memory. I got it wrong 4 times.

My colleague thought I was hopeless but I proudly showed her that I had learned how to get to print the ward list. Typical NHS it seems to be more complicated than it could be though obviously the ward staff need to get into more info than us.

I

Deathraystare · 04/02/2023 08:18

Whoops. Despite having glasses my typing is all over the place. Sorry!

MissConductUS · 04/02/2023 13:08

Lemons and Deathray, I'm so sorry to hear about your mothers' health concerns. We have had so much serious illness on this thread since last summer.

The forecast was correct. It was -18C here when I woke up this morning. I need to get out to do some shopping, but it's really bad outside.

HelenaJustina · 04/02/2023 16:07

Go steady Miss we had -11 here for a few days and that was cold enough! I’ve done mostly housework and taxi-ing duties today, DH is working again. DC4 got Player of the Match this morning so we celebrated with cake after lunch. Am now working on an assignment for my course. I’d love to get it finished this weekend, but we’ll see, the DC want to go to 6pm Mass and then to church Youth Group so I’m going to have to stop typing and get out of slobs soonish.

Silkierabbit · 04/02/2023 19:42

We saw DS last night then went to hotel swimming and jacuzzi then breakfast there then went to Kew Gardens orchid festival. Saw DS on way back. Now going home. DS is bad in there not eaten for 5 days now.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 04/02/2023 20:27

Silkie Again words fail me!
But the picture is lovely. I had to google the location.

Lemon All the best for your DM.

DD is preparing for her last 2 semesters. As she only has to pay about 350 € per semester, DD can do a MA if she wants to. She gets a little bit of money (BaföG), but only has to pay back half of it.

I repottet three Grünlilien (Spider plants?), temperatures are still around 1° so I did not clean the terasse.

I've been to the Vietnamese restaurant - nice place, great service and very nice food. On Monday w'll have something Greek says DD.

Silkierabbit · 04/02/2023 22:11

So glad you got to the Vietnamese Prok Kew Gardens is a famous botanical garden in London, it has a sister gardens called Wakehurst Place. I really like Kew but parking is quite the challenge. Orchids were wonderful and lovely to brighten up a February day.

Congrats to you DD Math

Sorry to hear about your Mum Lemons

We are studying triggers for bad times MissC. The forced meds are an obvious one. Cctv another. Music another asd thing. Social area can be one.

Floof was so happy we were back. He was chatting away to me and trilling.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 05/02/2023 00:18

It was about -25C here this morning but it’s warming up now and it’ll be above freezing tomorrow afternoon which is crazy.

My dog is extremely miffed at two days with no walk. I took him to the hunting and fishing store for a browse and he wasn’t impressed. He did like the pet store though, mainly because they had rawhides, so I bought him one and he has studiously ignored it ever since.

IWanderedLonely · 06/02/2023 21:54

It's been a gorgeous day here, sunny, bright and cold. Took grandson for a 2 mile walk this morning, my other daughter called in with my granddaughter- they're only 10 weeks apart in age and just beginning to notice each other.
I am trying to figure out what to say at the Dr's on Thursday, I get nervous then come away thinking I've been fobbed off but it's because I don't explain myself properly.

halfpasteleven · 06/02/2023 22:11

Iwandered if it helps at all, I write down what I want to say in bullet points so I don't forget anything.
Was at a gynaecologist on Monday and had my symptoms (of which there are many) typed in the notes section of my phone. She was glad I had done that, and I left feeling I had spoken truthfully and factually about my symptoms. Best of luck with your Dr.
Silkie, I'm sad to read the latest update on your darling DS. Sending you strength and love.

halfpasteleven · 06/02/2023 22:12

Wishing your mum all the very best, lemons

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 06/02/2023 22:30

Iwandered I used to make a list of everything I thought relevant.

DD and I went to our local Greek restaurant - I had a lot of fun and the food was as usual lovely. The place is family owned and the next generation has taken over.

We had 2,5 snowflakes, so I made a tiny snowman.
And here is a picture of Grisu:

MissConductUS · 06/02/2023 23:02

Iwandered, definitely bring a small notebook with list of questions and concerns to your appointment. I email mine to my doctor before I go in so that she has a chance to look at them before I get there.

Prok, Grisu is adorable! How old is Grisu?

There was more ice on the reservoir this morning. It doesn't look like a lot, but it was enough so that this Lacrosse ball didn't break through. There is an athletic field nearby, so Lacrosse balls are a fairly common sight.

Prok Grisu is a lovely cat. I had a marmalade cat before my current one and I have a very soft spot for them. She had a very even temperament and we have sweet memories of her.

DD got yet another acceptance letter, and now has a problem she's never experienced before in her history of applying to universities.

Deathraystare · 07/02/2023 08:43

@MissConductUS ·

I really do not want to live in USA BUT if the small bit where you live can be transported to West London somehow that would be very nice indeed. Would love to see the turkeys and the deer. Mind you, my Brother and SIL live very near the New Forest (Hampshire, England) and have had a muntjac deer in their garden!

Despite being vegetarian I would not blame you if you help yourself to one of those wild turkeys for Easter. Do you eat turkey at Easter? My family always did or Roast Lamb.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 07/02/2023 09:50

Miss Grisu is from a rescue shelter and they said he is about 6 years old, but he seems much younger.

The snow is gone - Mr. Morose and friends stamped all over it.

And here a view out of my window at the hospital ( I am due back in tomorrow):

cassiatwenty · 07/02/2023 16:40

Prok, that view is lovely. I hope you are back safe and sound tomorrow. Sorry I haven't been on here, kinda got lost a bit all over but still on MN!
