Silkierabbit · 29/12/2022 12:27

Hope you get to have all your nice lunches and chemo goes as well as it can on 6th Prok

That's exciting to have your holiday booked Lemons

Another car is exciting MissC

We arrived in France at night of 27th. DD wanted a veggie meal from service station, first service station was closed then DD said we will go to McDonalds. I said are you sure they will have anything veggie as this is France. DD said yes. So we went and DH asked for a veggie burger. The girl said vegetarianne and sounded shocked then suggested poulet. DD was no. The girl then suggested poisson. DD was no and refused the chips as well. When we got to MIL she had some French cheese and baguette and grapes and so did I.

Yesterday we had a meal with avocado starter with a punch aperitif, then pheasant with sauce and roast chestnuts and peas and then French cheeses and baguette then a special chocolate ice cream Christmas cake. For dinner we had soup, a veggie homemade quiche, cheese and fruit. Its amazing MIL is still preparing all this at 89. DH has just been to market with her and they bought lots of things then came back and MIL started screaming she needed to go back to market for meat. DH said he would do it by himself. MIL said no. So off they went back again. She is very determined to do everything herself.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 29/12/2022 17:48

Silkie That sounds great, especially the food. DH is from a place near the French border and the difference between the cuisines we grew up with is vast - think Dutch cooking vs. French
That reminds me the owl has removed all grammar hints form its super version, but insists that I read them - not that I ever would inflict my French on a French speaker. 😀

Deathraystare · 29/12/2022 18:03

@Silkierabbit

Yes I remember France not being good for Vegetarians.

My friend and I had trouble finding anywhere so just went to pasta joints. Any veggie restaurants seemed to have closed down! We did find one and it was very 'worthy'. Everything tasted of cardboard.

Mind you, on a coach trip once we found a service station and I had the most wonderful collection of pureed vegs!

We went to a greengrocers but found the foreign fruit (from Argentina!) much better than the French stuff. I would imagine the further south you go it gets better?

I also did not think much of the Thai food in France. Not authentic - most of the herbs and spices were not there!!!

Always4Brenner · 29/12/2022 18:15

Prok hope it goes well all the best gentle hugs.

RhubarbFairy · 30/12/2022 11:19

Hope you have a lovely time in Paris, Silkie.

I'm vegetarian and we go to France every year. We tend to self cater, and I get by okay in the supermarchés. Thankfully, I really like bread, so I eat a lot of baguettes with salad.

I'm currently sitting on the floor of a jam-packed train in between Salzburg and Vienna Airport. DH is in the seat immediately to my right, and the DCs are sat in aisle seats to my left. DH was chivalrous and insisted I have the seat, and he'd stand, but when I realised it was an hour to our next stop, I made him swap with me. I'm only 5'0, so I fold up on the floor much more comfortably than he does at 6'2. I'm leaning against a wall between seats, so I'm actually fairly comfortable. I've got my Kindle and was able to eat my salad baguette (works in all countries) in peace, without worrying about bothering my seatmate. We are just coming into Linz, Austria.

This is leg 2 of our 4 leg journey. We've already had an hour and 20 minute journey to Salzburg and are now an hour into a 2hr 50 journey. Then a flight, and finally, the drive home.

Hope the chemo goes okay Prok, it sounds like you have lovely plans in the lead up to it.

RhubarbFairy · 30/12/2022 12:05

Update. Two hours in and people finally got off at the second stop. I now have a seat. What luxury.

DH did offer his several times to be fair to him.

MissConductUS · 30/12/2022 15:33

I would love to go to France one day, but I think a trip to London would come first. The food in France sounds glorious.

I have long debated taking out a subscription to Britbox but could never really justify the cost. Amazon Prime Video is now offering it for $1.99 per month for the first two months, so I've taken the plunge. The first show I picked was Inside No. 9, which I found a bit too eccentric. I'm now watching Karen Pirie, which is a bit more straightforward.

DS is feeling better. The sores in his mouth have improved to the point where he was able to eat normally last night. DH's new car is ready to pick up at the dealership so I'm going to drive him down there to get it shortly.

I'm still a little knackered from covid, but not really suffering from it anymore.

Lemonsandlemonade · 30/12/2022 16:20

MissC glad your DS bid better, enjoy the new car. I love the smell of a new car 😊. This certainly is my unpopular opinion but in my view French food in restaurants is overrated ( in general) . This comes from many years of holidays in France as a child and now as an adult. That said I have to have muscles and chips when I am over there.

I do however love French supermarkets, markets and patisseries.

In ultra boring news DS has a McDonalds I know that’s a banned substance on MN but he was hungry and meant he didn’t have to wait. He loved it.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/12/2022 16:37

I'm currently getting a hydro massage at my gym. If anyone is curious about trying it, it is very good.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 30/12/2022 21:54

I hope you're all better soon MissC. What a rubbish Christmas. I bet your DD enjoys having the car though... almost as much as you enjoy not always having to drive her to college and back... :-)

I had my annual physical yesterday and I had my tetanus jab, so my left shoulder hurts. But I did not have to have a Pap smear so on balance it could have been worse. And we talked a lot about menopause. The joys of being in your 50s.

Silkierabbit · 30/12/2022 22:07

We went down today to see our friends at their chateau in the countryside which was nice. It was just DH and I in the end as DD decided midday was too early to be ready by and MIL pulled out.

Tomorrow night we have a New Year's party at a friends house.

mathanxiety · 31/12/2022 04:21

I always loved Vietnamese and North African restaurants in Paris.

MissC so glad you're feeling a bit better, and your DS too. I'm sure your DD will love having a car of her own.

We're planning to take down the tree this weekend but I have a lot of other stuff to see to also, and it's beginning to shed, so will require careful handling or I'll fill the printer with pine needles en route to the kitchen door again. I have a couple of old sheets to wrap it in. They have bits missing because I made masks from them early on in the pandemic. It may well be that the tree gets bumped down the priority list, all in all.

Deathraystare · 31/12/2022 08:07

Well I am just hoping that the New Year will be a lot better for everyone. We have been through a lot haven't we?

I am lucky that due to one of the other receptionists being on sick leave (hip or knee operation) I will have plenty of work for a while. Hopefully she will emerge pain free!

At work, our new phone system is playing up (surprise!) and our fire alarm is gong off. We are waiting for someone to fix it. I guess a day without drama would be very boring.

I am getting reading to changing my diet from tomorrow. I eat too much crap and for a vegetarian (well pescatarian) I do not eat many vegetables. Not because I do not like them. I do! I haven't bothered cooking much but then my flat mate who rarely leaves the flat tends to camp out in the kitchen. In and out so much it makes me dizzy. When he is not there he is in the loo! I am normally just about to open my door and busting when he walks by to use the loo. Dammit!

I made it to work with 2 minutes to spare! In the past I used to get in really early and they would all tease me that I had camped in the office overnight!

This is why in the New Year (yeah the one round the corner!) I should start eating right and walking more. I am like a sloth at the moment.

Wish you all a Happy New Year and better health as well..

Lemonsandlemonade · 31/12/2022 08:16

Deathray am with you on the eating better and exercising more for new years. I plan to get swimming once a week too.

We have family over from another country at moment( close family) well last night we had a bit of a get together. I found it fascinating but one thing really got to me another family member (close relative) but one I don’t have much time for who doesn’t like said family member to the point of ignoring them on street blocking them on social media etc turns up at do. Not only was said family member not invited she had a sickness bug and was quite poorly.

I am fuming. Such a MN style story that.

In other news have booked a carvery on NYD at local pub

IWanderedLonely · 31/12/2022 09:44

Lots to catch up on. Had a busy Christmas then a couple of days away, so only just catching up with the thread.
Happy New Year to all.

Silkierabbit · 31/12/2022 10:27

Glad you had a good Christmas Iwandered and happy new year.

Lemons Sorry about the relative. Hope you have a lovely NYD carvery.

Death Also hoping 2023 will be a better year, hope yours and everyone here's is too.

MIL was coughing like crazy last night. Her sister came before we did and now has bronchitis.

Always4Brenner · 31/12/2022 13:20

Well I caved in but the m and s sale new underwear so very pleased bedding later in the week. Start saving towards Christmas on Friday. Then in a few weeks will get more socks.

JamSandle · 31/12/2022 14:05

My second job has raised my salary starting this Jan which I'm very happy about.

Lemonsandlemonade · 31/12/2022 17:12

Hope your MIL better soon Silkie.

Had sad news today the lady I mentioned who was in palliative care passed away last night. She was like a grandmother to me. Sad but she isn’t suffering now.

In other news got steak from the new butcher in town two for £8 was shocked at being such a good price.

halfpasteleven · 31/12/2022 21:53

Happy new year to each and every one of you on this thread. Thank you for the soothing calmness this thread provides when I need it most.
Wishing you all health and happiness in 2023.

MissConductUS · 31/12/2022 22:28

Happy New Year to one and all! 2022 was not great. Let's hope for better in 2023.

ZZ, it was a rubbish Christmas, to be honest. We will still have to take her back to uni in a few weeks because of the bloody rowing machine we hauled home for her before Christmas. It's unlike to fit in the Impreza she's taking back. But it will be convenient in the future.

Thanks, Math. DD will surely enjoy the convenience of having the car. I hope she doesn't become the free taxi service for all of her friends. I suspect many of them have cars on campus too.

Lemons, that is a very MN'ty story about your family visiting. The carvery sounds like fun. We will probably do filet steaks on the grill tomorrow (today for you all). I'm sorry to hear about the passing of your friend.

That is good news, @JamSandle. I'm due for an increase as well, but not until February and I doubt it will add up to much.

DH waxed the new car in the garage this morning. It's not like the old waxes that have to be buffed in. This stuff is a liquid that is just sprayed on and spread with a cloth. Tomorrow (NYD) is his birthday, so I've picked up his favorite chocolate mousse cake from the posh bakery. We're having leftover ham and holiday potatoes for NYE dinner.

Hapy new year - may 2023 be a good year for all of you!

Silkierabbit · 31/12/2022 23:08

Happy New Year everyone and hope 2023 is a good year for everyone.

Its 2023 in France already, I am guessing you are in 2023 Prok, the British will be catching up with us in 50 mins now.

Went to the NYE party and was nice to see people not seen for 3 years due to lockdown and lovely canapes but came back as got quite tired. DH has gone back.

Lemonsandlemonade · 01/01/2023 07:30
