What food trends are you tired of?

In my case it's sourdough. I hate sourdough bread and while the pizzas are generally ok, I still prefer regular pizza dough but so many places seem to be switching to sourdough.

Also, putting biscuits on top of other sweet things. What's wrong with just a plain brownie? Sticking a Party ring on top doesn't improve it.

Brioche buns with burgers. I love a good burger but brioche buns utterly ruin them!

Damn straight

FeralWitch · 04/11/2022 19:00

I love a triple cocked chip, me Wink

As a coeliac, I’d like to announce I’ve had my lifetime’s share of Thai red, green and yellow curries. Please, please think of something else to offer us gluten-swervers. It’s not that hard.

SavouryPancake · 04/11/2022 19:13

Ostryga · 03/11/2022 20:12

Salted caramel, please do one.

Dessert only places - donuts, cookies, waffles etc. They’re usually shit and pricey.

Faux-Korean food. The authentic recipes aren’t hard to cook and are so so delicious. I don’t want overly sweet, syrupy chicken fried in breadcrumbs being called Korean fried chicken anymore!

A trend I’m desperate to see take off is raw, cultured butter available everywhere. It’s so good but sadly it costs me £8 a block and I eat it in 3 days. Cannot afford that in a cost of living crisis!

Where do you buy the butter?

Yep - bored of chefs treating veggies / vegans as carb-crazed faddists with the palate of a toddler.

If I'm planning to eat out and I see the main veggie or vegan option is heavy on some kind of root vegetable / squash, I generally avoid: it's a sign of a lazy kitchen.

You are perfectly entitled to dislike root veg and squash but do you not think it might be something to do with local and seasonal rather than lazy?

Not when it's appearing on a menu in May, no.

Anything that uses the word grazing, eugh other people touching my food and all fingers all over everything no thank you x

I live in NI and so everyone does one. The only difference I see from others is the fried soda and potato bread. Also delicious is Clonakilty black and white pudding.

WellWhoWouldHaveThought · 04/11/2022 22:07

Salted fucking caramel. I hate it. I just want caramel!

Not quite a food trend, but gin. I hate gin and it’s bloody everywhere. People that like gin cannot understand that not everyone else does.

SavouryPancake · 04/11/2022 22:20

Avocado

lightisnotwhite · 04/11/2022 23:15

@AffIt 😁

Dustyblue · 05/11/2022 03:40

I agree with almost everything on this thread!

My personal hate is people re-inventing classics. I once had a spaghetti carbonara that was drenched in grated lemon rind. Because lemon goes really well with parmesan, eggs & bacon (boak).

Or a Chicken Cesar Salad with mango. Crazy fuckers.

Presenting an example of a butter board….

🤢

CantSleepCountingSheep · 05/11/2022 04:46

Umm avocado is not a "trend" it's just a fruit!
And whoever said "Mexican food" is just ridiculous!

Sparklingbrook · 05/11/2022 05:13

I never got into Avocado as they are revolting anyway. But seem to be on every menu everywhere.

Houselamp · 03/11/2022 20:23

Vegetarian alternatives to meat being made from pea protein- it rastes rancid and nothing like peas as they are trying to make it taste like meat- which it doesn't. Its just horrible.
There are good 'fake meats' and there are good normal vegetarian options, pea protein is neither and its awful.

Yes! I hate pea protein, it just leaves a nasty aftertaste. It's such a disappointment to see an interesting looking new product in the supermarket only to find out it's made of pea protein 😠

WellWhoWouldHaveThought · 05/11/2022 08:17

I hate avocado anyway but this trend for ‘smashed’ avocado is just wankery bollocks. Anyone that pays £10 for some ‘smashed’ avocado on toast is an idiot.

Sparkletastic · 05/11/2022 08:34

Small plates menus. You just end up spending loads more and having lots of random dishes that don't really go together.

TerrifyingGhostTrain · 05/11/2022 08:46

Everything already said upthread I agree with except for sourdough & avocado which are both lovely.

other things that can get in the sea:

pumpkin spice latte
any sickly flavoured coffee syrups
”pornstar” martinis
shit flat whites
bacon added to everything
outlandish disgusting crisp flavours

Haha! Yes indeed, wanky bollocks. I actually love avocados, (since the 70s) when they were the height of fine dining with prawns & Marie rose sauce. Smashed avocado on toast at £10 a go my arse. Often were consumed by beardy urban lumberjacks who worked in media & pronounced the word little as 'liddle'. Are they even around anymore as not spotted any of late?

Yes, but avocados are enjoying a 'moment' where they are shamelessly shoved into everything. They need to go back to niche obscurity PDQ.

You've just had bad Thai curries! I sympathise, as a vegetarian a lot of pubs were only offering a chickpea curry with rice and microwaved naan until a few years ago. They always tasted like the microwave ready meals from supermarkets. Very annoying in a country filled with good Indian restaurants.

PlacidPenelope · 05/11/2022 13:06

Skinnermarink · 03/11/2022 20:11

Switching things that were nicely vegetarian to vegan. I know they probably think it kills two birds with one stone on a menu but it’s bloody annoying. I still want cheese!!

This a million times - I want vegetarian food made with vegetables, I want proper cheese, dairy and eggs or things made with them - I do not want vegan fake meat or cheese, which is just some weird chemical concoction, and nut or oat based dairy.

Vegetarian and vegan are different stop thinking catering to vegan covers all the bases, it doesn't.

Mentalpiece · 05/11/2022 13:31

Surely that spaghetti would be clap cold before it was eaten? What's the point of it?
No thank you to grazing tables, butter boards, drizzles of this, smears of that.
Nor do I want sourdough bread, brioche or avocado.
I want proper food on a proper plate.
I've never tried triple cocked fries though, is it a wetherspoons thing? 😲

At this stage it could be cooked by a gourmet chef, I’d still not want it. I’ve had sufficient Grin

CurlsnLipstick · 12/11/2022 15:00

Tried lotus biscuit for the first today and it's nothing to write home about.
Instantly remembered this thread.

Elphame · 12/11/2022 16:19

Fake food designed for new vegans which replaces decent vegetarian food.
