What food trends are you tired of?

In my case it's sourdough. I hate sourdough bread and while the pizzas are generally ok, I still prefer regular pizza dough but so many places seem to be switching to sourdough.

Also, putting biscuits on top of other sweet things. What's wrong with just a plain brownie? Sticking a Party ring on top doesn't improve it.

Cauliflower masquerading as "chicken wings" or "steak". Yuck.

NotAnotherPylon · 04/11/2022 08:29

Jackfruit. It is awful in every way.

Gardenoverflow · 04/11/2022 08:31

Weedy salad that slaps my face when I try to eat it. Much prefer more sedate lettuce leaves.

Garlic in everything. In particular, I dare you to find any sort of dip that does not contain garlic.

Phrenologistsfinger · 04/11/2022 08:45

I’m sick of lazy token vegan options (i’e’ without protein, plus chips and salad isn‘t a main meal!) and still struggling to find food to eat. Those complaining about vegan options clearly don’t know what it is like never being able to eat out anywhere and having to have a bloody bag of nuts with you at all times because you cannot rely on food existing where you are going. (Ethical vegan, never eaten meat, not going to to change so don’t go there!)

Phrenologistsfinger · 04/11/2022 08:46

Oh and avocado/sweet potato/butternut squash can all do one!

Biscoff ALWAYS pops up on these threads. I have literally never heard of it, let alone tried it. Never heard of a butter board either.

Anyway, as for me... I am sick of salted caramel too. Who the fuck ever thought that would be a good idea? Confused DH has salted caramel hot chocolate at night, and the smell is so vile and sickly that I have to put an incense stick on to get rid of the smell.

And yes sourdough. It's vile.

Avocado. Bland as fuck.

And as a pp said, I am sick of stupidly tiny chocolate bars now, that are offensively small, and taste greasy and slimy because palm oil!

Food served on a lump of slate in restaurants.

I also hate basic shit being labelled as something fancy and frilly and then tagged with a silly price. In a new little pretentious, hipster. vegetarian restaurant me and DD and 4 of her pals went to for lunch a few months ago, the cheapest lunchtime meal I could find was £9.49. It was 'oeufs pochés sur pain grillé' Basically..... it was one piece of toast with 2 poached eggs on it, and a bit of basil and pepper sprinkled over it. Nearly a fucking tenner for 2 poached eggs on toast.

Biscoff are those silly little biscuits you sometimes get with a cup of tea at cafes. For some reason people go nuts over them and now want to base whole desserts around them.

@Sparklingbrook I totally agree! Everything seems to have chilli in it. It is practically impossible for me to find starters or mains on a menu which either don't have chilli or which aren't to my taste for other reasons. However my main bugbear is that everything is overly fancified. Perfectly nice food is being jazzed up with extras which it doesn't need. Why not serve the extras as extras? Not have them as an integral part of the meal. Cake is cake. Burgers are burgers. Cottage pie is cottage pie. There are so many nice casseroles which have excellent flavour just from the basic ingredients in them (including the basic herbs etc), why then try to make them into something they're not meant to be? I don't want stilton in my beef stew thank you. And I don't want my cheese on toast to have a mustard glaze. I would like to add my own mustard, or not.

DilemmaDelilah · 04/11/2022 09:22

@Gardenoverflow I quite agree about weedy salad. I do not want mixed leaves. I would like lettuce. There are lots of kinds of lettuce. It can be delicious. I don't want mixed leaves, I hate rocket, why not give us the option? Mixed leaves for those that like them and lettuce in all its glorious variety for those that dont.

Brefugee · 04/11/2022 09:29

I love salted caramel. But it's always disappointing as not salty enough.

Those butterboards look disgusting - what are you supposed to do with them?
Grazing tables - get in the bin.

EugeneLevysEyebrow · 04/11/2022 09:34

Foams - they just look like saliva

And restaurants who only have vegan options rather then decent vegetarian ones. I want my cheese!

ClaribelLowLieth · 04/11/2022 09:35

Skinnermarink · 03/11/2022 20:11

Switching things that were nicely vegetarian to vegan. I know they probably think it kills two birds with one stone on a menu but it’s bloody annoying. I still want cheese!!

Oh my God, YES!!!

Yep - bored of chefs treating veggies / vegans as carb-crazed faddists with the palate of a toddler.

If I'm planning to eat out and I see the main veggie or vegan option is heavy on some kind of root vegetable / squash, I generally avoid: it's a sign of a lazy kitchen.

Daisychainsx · 04/11/2022 10:05

Cinnamon 🤢 even the smell of it I can't stand.
Oreos in desserts, there's always an oreo cheesecake... what happened to good old lemon or strawberry?
When the veggie burger is made of smooshed up vegetables instead of like a moving mountains burger.
Truffle oil 😳

howdoyougethingsdone · 04/11/2022 10:13

It's not a food trend but we need to get rid of "so called" restaurants like Cosmo which sell quantity over quality.

How can one restaurant specialise in so many different food rules! It can't. It's truly awful!

NCFT0922 · 04/11/2022 10:14

Lotus bloody biscoff.

Lollypop701 · 04/11/2022 11:20

Anything that is meant to be picked up to eat(burger/sandwich) that can actually only be eaten with a knife and fork. Unsalted salted caramel. I’d also like good basic deserts .. apple pie or crumble, strawberry cheesecake, it’s always chocolate or biscoff deserts which aren’t for me . (Can add coriander and rocket to most foods though)

paulmccartneysbagel · 04/11/2022 11:27

Can I please add - Spaghetti table feasts. When the dinner table is lined with foil and food is literally dumped on the table. Utter crap.

paulmccartneysbagel · 04/11/2022 11:29

NotAnotherPylon · 04/11/2022 08:29

Jackfruit. It is awful in every way.

Oh god YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES!

Asher33 · 04/11/2022 11:32

Salted caramel. What's wrong with just caramel?

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 04/11/2022 12:36

I'm with you there @BeastOfBODMAS

Are you sure you didn’t just encounter this in a nightmare? I’ve never heard of it and it sounds too awful to be a real thing.

paulmccartneysbagel · 04/11/2022 14:27

@Lightningfast I wish it was a nightmare.

Brace yourself.

BobDear · 04/11/2022 14:35

I've just googled Spaghetti Table Feast. That is fucking disgusting.

Anything just on a table. Food needs crockery between It and the Table.

Sandwiches with too many fillings. When. the middle is thicker than the combined bread thickness it makes me actually gag. All that gloop and mixed flavours till it doesn't taste of anything recognisable.

The most revolting thing I can think of is 'mixed' meats - or meat stuffed with more meat - like 3 Bird Roasts. I know this is not a 'new trend' but it makes me heave just thinking about it (and I am a carnivore!)

I hate sourdough too. I also hate brioche. Brioche burger buns 🤢.

Brioche buns with burgers. I love a good burger but brioche buns utterly ruin them!

I should have read this first. Snap!
