What splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed?

So decided to treat myself and buy myself a Venus embrace razor. I loved how glamorous it looked, loved that you can buy new heads for it and reuse the handle (less plastic waste). Just really wanted to love this item!

Anyway so I have a shower this morning with my Venus embrace…. I shave my legs, great result. Shave my toes, great result. Shave armpits, again great... And just when I’m really beginning to feel like a silky smooth Goddess in the shower… I try to shave my bikini area. OMG seriously wtf is wrong with this razor??? Something about the shape of the razor itself just makes it impossible to get a good result in the bikini area😳. I’m so disappointed.
I’m hoping the Venus razor inventor reads this thread and improves their product. Because I so wanted to love this item.

You would think spending more money on an item would get you a better product. But apparently not… So what luxury splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed??

Ok, that sounds like I walk around the make up department naked.
I don’t. Well, not often.

Beansfordays · 07/11/2022 19:06

Hunter wellies. I have small calves but man they are ridiculously tight. Serves me right for being a posy twat of a suburban SAHM that has absolutely no need for wellies except for the odd soggy school run. I do still love them though, I just love them from afar.

Also another vote for a cordless Dyson and my corded shark. Both are shite. My best one was a £50 argos vac that I stupidly gave away when I got the shark.

Beansfordays · 07/11/2022 19:15

Oh and one of those weird blue foam neck adjusting pillows that's supposed to fix a neck hump. I used it once as per the instructions and couldn't move my right arm for a bastard week.

I agree @Sitdownnigel. I’ve never understood the MN love for Charlotte Tilbury.

pokeball · 08/11/2022 07:52

Has anyone bought a silk pillowcase that stopped their split ends?

billy1966 · 08/11/2022 08:40

I have the Dyson Animal that I picked up last Black friday, it replaced my old one which still works because they replaced the old battery.

I find the suction excellent.

I agree about Charlotte Tilbury.
I received a very expensive buddle of her products from a friend, didn't rate and past the stuff on.

Yes! I wouldn't be without mine. My hair is much smoother and there's less breakage. My 4 year old is autistic and has sensory issues and hates her hair washing and brushing and it used to matt terribly. The silk pillowcase has stopped it tangling like it used to and she's starting to tolerate brushing now. Ours were only about £20 and genuine mulberry silk. Highly recommend.

Wow I’m glad I never wasted any money on Charlotte tilbury make up now 😮

Has anyone tried the Charlotte tilbury moisturiser? I always wondered about the magic cream, whether it was worth the money🤔

I've found Charlotte tilbury makeup terrible and surprised it does so well. Maybe just good marketing making people like me buy more random pieces of crap from her to try find something decent.
On the subject of moisturiser. Dr Barbara Sturm. My luxury purchase that was a waste. I dwell on the other things I could've spent that money on.

Hunter wellies, agree rubbish
Joules wellies, ditto
Jo Malone candles as Aldi dupes are great
Fitbit, in a drawer somewhere
Nutribullet - can't be bothered

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 09/11/2022 21:43

Oh - and the obvious contender. My Landrover. Lusted after a Discovery Sport when my old Freelander died. Beautiful car, lovely to drive, absolute rubbish. Had so much go wrong with it that I’ve lost the love and am going to sell it. Enjoyed it when it worked but happy to let it go now.

Hallionflossie · 10/11/2022 22:48

Interestingly, I reviewed my Velvetiser and mentioned the fact that the chocolate is not hot - but they didn’t publish it. I wonder if a lot of people are disappointed about that, and HC just publish the rave reviews on their website.

cocavino · 10/11/2022 22:49

@Hallionflossie I have been considering getting a velvetiser. How cool is the chocolate?

Hallionflossie · 10/11/2022 23:25

It’s just warm, hotter than lukewarm but only just. Personal preference I suppose but I like it hotter, my DH couldn’t drink it either.

User438651209 · 11/11/2022 04:33

I have seen reviews about the velvetiser not being very hot, I find it ok if I drink it straight away but I do sometimes think I drink my coffee a bit too hot and have occasionally scalded my mouth so for me it is not a bad thing.

DH drinks his tea lukewarm and still finds the velvetiser a bit hot so it really depends on how you like your drinks, for me it is fine but I can see why people complain it is not hot enough.

christmas2022 · 11/11/2022 08:00

Is it just a milk frothier?

Foxgluv · 11/11/2022 11:41

I put off buying a velvetiser for the reason mentioned above. It's honestly the best hot chocolate I've ever had. I haven't found that it's too cool, I like that you can drink it straight away.
It's very easy to use and clean, it looks nice sitting out and takes up very little room. It's probably one of my most worthy purchases. Going to look into other things to make with it.

Glittertwins · 11/11/2022 12:41

I find the velvetiser too cool as I like my drinks generally a lot hotter however the DCs don't have the same problem as me

Hallionflossie · 11/11/2022 15:27

Basically, yes. Whisks the chocolate for 2 mins and the drink is creamy (using whole milk). Mine was a present and I have only used it twice, will try microwaving it after for a few seconds next time which is a pain. Another appliance taking up space in the kitchen :(

Hallionflossie · 11/11/2022 15:28

That was a reply to christmas2022

ImustLearn2Cook · 11/11/2022 23:59

I haven’t used a velvetiser before, but could you slightly warm the milk in the microwave first to get to the desired temperature when using the velvetiser?

HRTQueen · 12/11/2022 00:47

Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk lip liner and lipstick

now I’m not sure exactly what I was expecting but was under some idiotic belief my lips would look perfect and plump and not too dissimilar to the models on the advent

the just looked the same with pasty lipstick on

shall stick to my e.l.f lip liner

I don't think so because there is a thermostat inside the machine so it might not work properly. However nothing stopping me from trying it !
