What splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed?

So decided to treat myself and buy myself a Venus embrace razor. I loved how glamorous it looked, loved that you can buy new heads for it and reuse the handle (less plastic waste). Just really wanted to love this item!

Anyway so I have a shower this morning with my Venus embrace…. I shave my legs, great result. Shave my toes, great result. Shave armpits, again great... And just when I’m really beginning to feel like a silky smooth Goddess in the shower… I try to shave my bikini area. OMG seriously wtf is wrong with this razor??? Something about the shape of the razor itself just makes it impossible to get a good result in the bikini area😳. I’m so disappointed.
I’m hoping the Venus razor inventor reads this thread and improves their product. Because I so wanted to love this item.

You would think spending more money on an item would get you a better product. But apparently not… So what luxury splurge item have you bought that’s left you disappointed??

Henry hoover - sold it and bought a fabulous shark
Smeg hob - absolute shit
Hillary's blinds and shutters aren't what they used to be but still charge as before when they were brilliant

@Chloefairydust do you know which pillows you bought from John Lewis, there’s a few feather ones. I’ve been on the hunt for perfect pillows for ages……..sorry to digress from thread 😬

Mine is the Chanel advent calendar. I wish I had seen this first. 😕 Biggest pile of tat ever.

Omg that advent calendar!!!

Apple Macbook, hated it and went back to Windows as soon as I could. I know many love all things Apple but I am more comfortable with what I know which is Windows. Cost me a lot to find this out.

Velvetiser - chocolate is lukewarm not hot, better off using a milk frother (£10) and a saucepan.
Silk pillowcase - looks lovely but doesn’t do anything for frizzy hair or skin and is warm, just use cotton ones now.

I love my velvetiser. One of the best things I’ve bought this year. I did buy it on offer though and used a gift card. Don’t think I’d have splurged on it otherwise.

Gtech strimmer, I have their vacuum and adore it the bloody strimmer is useless, the little green plastic thing that does the atual strimming keeps flying off, I didn't wear trousers the first time couple of nasty cuts. Definietly NOT cheap

Lookingforrecommendations · 05/11/2022 09:07

Emma mattress, it's awful, dips at the sides and has given me a bad back, can't lie in anymore or I'm in agony.
We're stuck with it until we can afford to get a new one.

Bronguin · 05/11/2022 09:38

@RandomCatGenerator Please could you tell me which Matrix Biolage? There seem to be lots of them on Amazon. I've tried everything on my frizz to no avail. Thank you

tumdedum · 05/11/2022 09:45

I've been disappointed by everything I've bought as a result of reading someone raving about it on Mumsnet:
Seasalt winter coat: everyone seemed to be going on about the 'Plant Hunter' coat last year. I ordered one online, when it arrived it seemed 'cheap' and not flattering at all so I sent it back.
Olaplex: I spent over a hundred quid on their various products after seeing people on Mumsnet rave about it - it made not one jot of difference to my crap, thinning, dry curly hair - I stuck with it as I'd spent so much money, but if anything made it feel worse and more greasy.
Acqua di Parma Perfume Selection Set: so many Mumsnetters were saying these smelt lovely, so I was so excited to treat myself. 10 perfume testers for about £40 (didn't companies used to give these away for free?) they all smell like men's aftershave, granny soap or cats arse.

Every time I feel like such a sucker, one day I'll stop falling for it.

A cross trainer, second hand. Used once, thought I would never walk again. Haven’t used it since.

Yes! I'd forgotten about this. It made a good dressing gown hanger until I gave it to BIL who went so fast on it he broke it!

I never watch vloggers or Tiktok or whatever this is but honestly that’s fantastic. Chanel have been busted.

Small shark vacuum, terrible. I bought it for the caravan, We threw away the shark and DH bought a Worx instead

Apple Watch. Having to take it off and charge every night is annoying.

Tbf if you are going to drop 700 quid on something and you don't even know what's in the box, then I don't have that much sympathy.

Chanel are notorious for being shit these days anyway. The price hikes on their bags are quite frankly laughable, who on earth would be stupid enough to pay for a new one at such ridiculously inflated prices these days?

And for a company who burns their end of season stock, lest any of it makes its way into the Shock sales, they seem quite happy to sell total shite in that advent calendar.

RandomCatGenerator · 04/11/2022 00:07

@eyebright22 oh no, are Swedish Hasbeens really uncomfortable?! I’ve been lusting for a while…

I have narrow, flattish feet and they just slip right down the sandals, creating a horrible muffin top effect, as well as being uncomfortable. People with other types of feet might have a different experience.

I got a very high heeled pair, I'm tempted to try again with a lower pair and maybe a smaller size.

stayathomer · 05/11/2022 12:22

Had to jump in, all the people with dry frizzy curly hair- if you want it to be curly the Shea moisture products are a dream and you’ll find them on offer in to max or boots (expensive at 9 euro but a dream). I also use argan oil from penneys and frizz ease. If you like straightening I use John Frieda brilliant brunette. Just in case it helps anyone!

stayathomer · 05/11/2022 12:23

Tk max- sorry!!

Moofart · 05/11/2022 12:42

Last year I spend a small fortune on two merino wool chunky knit throws for my living room. Looked lovely at first but turns out they are totally incompatable with small children as the wool got scuffed and could easily be pulled apart when they put their little hands in. They are now bagged up in the loft.

AbsoluteTruths · 05/11/2022 12:44

At 55, I now have more hair on my toes than legs. This Veet for legs, sensitive is just brilliant at removing it for weeks. I also use it on my undercarriage with zero sting and I have extrememely sensitive skin. Far better than shaving and totally painless. www.amazon.co.uk/Veet-Hair-Removal-Cream-Sensitive/dp/B000LNHB7G/ref=asc_df_B000LNHB7G/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=226532832899&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=3113411171948920429&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007336&hvtargid=pla-396446195211&psc=1&th=1&psc=1

Another crap buy was in the old days on here. Babyliss Big Hair anyone? What a crock. My fine hair got so tangled up in it I had to cut about five inches off.

It’s this one:

I don’t know if that’s a legitimate seller or not, but that’s the right serum. I use a few drops after a shower: I put it up in a towel for a few mins while I dry myself, moisturise, brush teeth etc, then towel off hair lightly and run a few drops of serum through, detangling it / brushing through with fingers. I usually do it with my head upside down - just my preference as easiest to get the back etc (I have mid-back hair so quite long).

Good luck!

I like their hydrasource shampoo and conditioner for dry hair too. Quite expensive in the UK but was my go to when living in a very polluted city overseas as the pollution made my hair so dry and frizzy.

I’ve had mixed experiences with Argan oil - I find it’s too easy to accidentally end up greasified, personally. Agree on John Frieda products, they’re very nice. I used to find them drying years ago but retried them recently and have been very pleasantly surprised indeed. Will probably re-buy when I run out
